Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/20/09

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, October 20, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Despite the recession, Apple reported what it’s calling its most profitable quarter ever during FY Q4 ’09, posting revenue of $9.87 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.67 billion, up 45% y/y. The company sold a record 7.4 million iPhones (+70% over previous quarter), 3.05 million Mac computers and 10.2 million iPods across the globe. The iPod continues to enjoy a +70% market share of the MP3 market according to MPD. There were more than half a billion app downloads in Sept. alone and $2.3 billion in revenue was generated during the quarter on app sales. In response to a question regarding competing iPhone “wannabes,” Apple COO Tim Cook noted that the ecosystem that supports the phone gives the company significant momentum. “There are now more than 85,000 apps on the App store, which is a country mile more than anyone else,” he said.

The Abu Dhabi Media Co. (ADMC) has made a strategic investment in Vevo, the music video and entertainment joint venture between Universal Music and Sony Music, powered by YouTube.

The Hallmark Movie Channel has upped its distribution in several new markets including Detroit, Boston, San Francisco, Atlanta, Phoenix and Las Vegas. The digital network is now in 25 million homes including the top 30 DMAs, more than a 100% increase from a year ago, according to Hallmark.

4Kids Entertainment’s TC Digital Games struck a deal with NFL Properties and NFL Players to produce an online football collectible trading card game with a digital card online component, targeted for launch to coincide with the start of the 2010 NFL season. The collectible trading card game will adopt the same web platform used for the Chaotic online trading card game.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

In the fragmented world of web video two heads are sometimes better than one. Competing portals Metacafe and Babelgum have announced a new partnership that has resulted in the launch of a new free iPhone app powered by Babelgum and the launch of a branded Babelgum channel on the Metacafe site. The iPhone app provides a simple interface, recommending 9 curated selections of stand up and sketch comedy, animation, how to, sports, etc., along with some of Babelgum’s original fare.

New York-based independent producer Amy Palmer is putting together a new web series profiling women entrepreneurs. PowerwomenTV, launching in Nov., will focus on the challenges women like Daily Candy’s Dany Levy and Blip.tv Co-founder Dina Kaplan face trying to balance their professional and personal lives. Amy has partnered with The Huffington Post to produce the show; each subject will also blog on the HuffPo site.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Publicis’ ZenithOptimedia has again downgraded its global ad spending projections, now projecting overall spending to decline by 9.9% to $445 billion. (Print is expected to suffer the biggest drop.) Online advertising is still expected to grow but a slower rate, as the company lowered its growth projection from 10.1% to 9.2% in the U.S. Online advertising is expected to be the only category to grow. It is also expected to account for a bigger slice of the overall ad pie.

eMarketer also followed suit, lowering its U.S. online ad spend forecast to $22.8 billion – a decline of 2.9% from 2008. But the researcher sees the drop as just a temporary glitch. Moderate growth is expected to ensue in 2010 and 2011, with spending projected to rise 5.9% and 6.6%, respectively. 2012 will see double-digit growth, thanks to the presidential election and economic stabilization. Also thanks to the influx of large brand advertisers, video advertising will account for the highest growth rates by far, expected to jump by 42.6% this year, 40.4% next year over 35% each subsequent year through 2014.

U.S Online Advertising Spending, 2008-2014
Year    Spending (billions)  % change
2008        $23.4        10.6%
2009        $22.8        -2.9%

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Vivendi is locked in talks with General Electric Co. about selling its minority stake in NBC Universal but the two parties are still about $500 million apart, reports The WSJ. Vivendi is seeking book value, which pegs its 20% share at about $6.3 billion. Meanwhile Comcast is prepared to value NBCU in the $20-$30 billion range, making the Vivendi share worth between $5.6 and $6 billion. The structure of the potential Comcast deal suggests that GE may sell its entire 49% investment in NBCU in two stages that would stretch over 7 years.

Gannett managed to beat analysts’ estimates and post a profit during Q3, despite a sharp fall in revenues. Publishing revenue dropped 24% while broadcasting experienced a 23% decline. Digital operating revenues for the quarter totaled $142.96 million, up 84.2% from $77.59 million a year ago, reflecting the consolidation of CareerBuilder for the full quarter. The company trumpeted its multiplatform, multi-division publishing prowess such as a recent National Breast Cancer Foundation campaign involving homepage takeovers, video vignettes, newspaper ads and a momslikeme.com sponsorship. CEO Craig Dubow also acknowledged that NBC’s switch to Leno at the 10 o’clock hour has hurt Gannett’s local stations and that the prospect of Comcast taking over a majority stake in the network (and possibly making it a cable network) does note bode well for Gannett NBC affiliates.

An all star cast of Tech leaders including Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, YouTube co-founder Steve Chen and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos penned an open letter to the FCC to show their support for the commission’s proposed Net Neutrality framework, to be unveiled later this week.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Verizon Wireless launched a new ad campaign for the Android-based, Motorola-built Droid mobile device expected out in Nov., taking direct aim at perceived annoyances of the iPhone. The ad runs through a laundry list of “iDon’t’s” to express what the Droid does do, including run simultaneous apps, run widgets and feature a physical keyboard and 5 megapixel camera. The Droid will be running version 2.0 of Google’s Android OS, expected to finally give the iPhone interface a run for its money.

Plastic Logic announced that the Que, a new e-reader powered by the AT&T 3G network designed for the business user, will be unveiled at CES on Jan. 7. It will feature a 8.5 x 11 inch screen and display books, magazines , PDFs, and Microsoft Office documents, utilizing the company’s patented plastic display technology.

CNBC introduced a new iPhone app focusing on breaking news video reports. The free app features live real-time stock quotes and charts during and after trading hours, along with extensive customized charts and an extensive VOD archive. The interface allows users to sign up for push notifications of companies they follow, so that the app will text you when your company appears in a new news report.

The Univision website launched a new community toolbar application, powered by Saas platform inventor Conduit. The plug in, available for IE, Firefox or Safari, performs a takeover of your browser interface allowing users to browse, share and search for Univision content, including news, gossip and soccer.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

New York-based out-of-home interactive network TouchTunes made two new hires in two newly created positions. Former Google executive Pamela Schoenfeld joins as VP & General Counsel while former Ripple TV CEO John McMenamin comes aboard as SVP, GM of Barfly. Both will report to Charles Goldstuck, CEO.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

In what will no doubt be its most popular live streaming experiment to date, YouTube will host a live global webcast of the “U2ube” concert on Sunday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, kicking off at 8:30 PM local time. Leave it to the boys from Dublin to utilize the web’s biggest video platform to try and reach millions of fans; the concert will be streamed live in 16 counties altogether: Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Korea, Spain and the United States. As with the site’s screening of Taxi Driver last Friday, fans will be able to chat with each other as they watch, using an integrated Twitter feed. YouTube has played around with live streaming before, streaming segments of the Outside Lands music festival last November, for instance. But this one is going to be a lot more difficult to pull off. If it goes well from a technical standpoint, expect to this to be added to bands’ promotional arsenal going forward (as soon as they’re able to line up the proper rights clearances, that is.)
