Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 19, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Scholastic celebrates its 90th anniversary with the launch of the global literacy campaign, Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life. ( www.scholastic.com/readeveryday ), which aims to increase literacy in the 21st century and underlines to kids the importance of reading has in their success in life.  The campaign will also target parents and teachers to help make reading easier, more fun and more accessible to kids at school and home.  More than 120 organizations and individuals have joined the campaign as literacy champions.  The Read Every Day initiative is comprised of several elements, including:

  • The Reading Bill of Rights the Bill of Rights is available on the website and will also be handed out at noted sites around the world on October 22, Scholastic’s official anniversary.
  • Reading Action Steps, ways we can all encourage and help kids read
  • Celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Bates, Keke Palmer, and the NFL’s Justin Tick, will support Read Every Day through public service announcements, while noted kid’s illustrators, including David Shannon, Mark Teague, Norman Bridwell, and Barbara McClintock, have created special posters for the campaign
  • Scholastic has also created the social network site You Are What You Read (
  • www.youarewhatyouread.com), for readers worldwide  where people can post the five books that changed their lives and connect with others through shared “Bookprints,” and discover new books.  The site also features “Bookprints” of noted people such as Bill Gates, Eva Mendes, Tony Hawk, Jodi Picoult, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Malcolm Gladwell.  The site launches October 22.

  • Taylor Swift will participate in a live webcast exclusively for schools to celebrate Read Every Day.  Read Now! with Taylor Swift will include an interview with the artist about how reading is part of her life and she will perform.  Hosted by Nick Cannon, the event will take place October 27, 2010.  Teachers can get more information and register at scholastic.com/readeveryday

Paramount and Disney enter into a deal that will have Paramount transfer the worldwide marketing and distribution rights to two of Marvel Studios‘ movies, The Avengers and Iron Man 3, to Disney, per Variety.  Disney, which owns Marvel, will pay Paramount $115 million for the rights.  Under the agreement, Paramount will continue hold the worldwide distribution rights to Marvel movies Thor (May 6, 2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22, 2011), and the already released Iron Man and Iron Man 2.  According to the terms of the deal, the money will serve as a minimum guarantee against the distribution fees.  Disney then announced it will release Iron Man 3 on May 13, 2013.

FremantleMedia signs a deal to acquire an additional 51% stake in Canadian developer/publisher casual video game company Ludia, bringing FremantleMedia to a total majority stake of 80%.  The deal is expected to be complete by the end of the year.  Ludia’s President and Founder, Alex Thabet, will remain in his roles as will the company’s existing management team.  Additionally, the deal will have no impact on Ludia’s third party partnerships.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sorpresa, the US Hispanic Kid/Teen 2-17 targeted network, hosts the US cable TV debut of the live-action preschool series Dos y Dos (www.dosydos.com), which will air seven days a week at 7a, 10:30a and 1: 30p.  Produced by The Latin American Multimedia Corporation, Dos y Dos is recorded in Spanish and teaches English to preschool kids.  The series also uses music, dance and colors and encourages kids/teens to speak both Spanish and English.

Nickelodeon‘s Halloween programming line-up includes the premiere of the two-hour comedy/sci-fi TV movie, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, which stars Victoria Justice (Victorious) and Brooke Shields, on Saturday, October 23 at 8p, and a new episode of Big Time Rush, Big Time Halloween, Friday, October 22, at 8p.  The network will also scare up a range of Halloween-themed programming the week of Monday-Friday, October 25-29, 7-8p.  Nickelodeon will also feature sneak peeks of its Halloween-themed premieres on Nick.com and NickJrVideo.com, as well as on Nickelodeon’s mobile VOD platforms.  A special playlist of scary-themed episodes (live-action, animated, and preschool) will be available on Nickelodeon’s VOD platforms.  Additionally, a Halloween-themed bundle of content will be available via Nickelodeon’s download-to-own partners.  All Halloween content airing on Nickelodeon this month will be simulcast on Nick Mobile.

  • On the preschool side, Nickelodeon will also premiere two new Halloween-themed preschool treats on Monday, October 25, Team Umizoomi‘s The Ghost Family Costume Party at 11:30a, followed by The Fresh Beat Band‘s The Giant Pumpkin at 1:30p.
  • Nick at Nite will feature a marathon of Halloween-themed episodes on Saturday, October 30, from 10p to 3a, including episodes from George Lopez, Everyone Hates Chris, Malcolm in the Middle and Family Matters.
  • Nicktoons hosts Weenhallow Weekend, beginning Saturday, October 30, and Sunday, October 31, from 11a to 9p.  The programming will feature Nicktoons characters turning into their opposites.

MTV Networks International completes two content deals for Nickelodeon preschool programming in Kazakhstan and Afghanistan, which includes the first Nick Jr. Branded block worldwide.

  • Beginning next month in Kazakhstan, localized versions of Nickelodeon’s preschool programming will broadcast on pubcaster Kazakhstan1 and in a branded programming block on the new kid-targeted channel, Balapan.  Nick programming featured in the new deal includes Dora The Explorer (seasons 1-5), Go, Diego, Go! (three seasons), and Ni Hao, Kai-Lan (first two seasons).
  • In Afghanistan, localized Nickelodeon programming will run on Ariana Television Network (ATN), the free-to-air satellite TV network.  ATN will air of Dora the Explorer (seasons 1-2), with Dora helping Afghanis kids learn words and phrases in English.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) will bring The Wizard of Oz to kids across multiple-platforms, including online via WizardofOzKids.com ( www.wizardofozkids.com ), a new K2-11 targeted interactive site from WBCP in association with KidsWB.com.  WizardofOzKids.com features a range of games, activities, and downloadables.  Additionally, WBshop.com is offering a range of The Wizard of Oz products and merchandise including costumes.  WBCP is supporting the launch through a partnership with The Parent Group, which invites Wizard of Oz fans to enter a sweepstakes and photo contest, details can be found at parenting.com/wizardofoz ( www.parenting.com/wizardofoz ).

AtomicOnline‘s SheKnows City Guide ( http://cityguide.sheknows.com) is geared toward active women and mothers who are looking for local exercise destinations or attractions that are kid friendly. This new feature will focus on 30 of the top cities and DMAs initially.

MARKETING/LICENSING

THQ and Nickelodeon extend their partnership with a new multi-year licensing deal, which grants THQ the worldwide rights to create interactive video games based on SpongeBob SquarePants.  The new agreement will see THQ develop and publish SpongeBob SquarePants games for PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Xbox Live for Xbox 360, PlayStation Network and Nintendo Wii Virtual Console.  The first game as part of the deal will be released in 2011 and will take advantage of the capabilities of Nintendo 3DS, THQ’s new uDraw GameTablet for Wii, and Kinect for Xbox 360, no controller required.

Chorion enters into three promotional deals for the Mr. Men and Little Miss brand this fall.

  • Mr. Mo, a new Mr. Men character has been created in Australia and New Zealand to support the Movember Foundation’s national global men’s health initiative, Movember.  The Mr. Mo promotion is exclusive to all 283 Target stories across Australia, which is selling four Mr. Mo t-shirts in store now with 25% of the proceeds of each shirt sold going to Movember’s nominated charities.
  • In the UK, Mr. Men character Mr. Happy will front the cross-media promotional campaign for eyewear retailer, Specsavers, beginning this fall and running through the end of the year.
  • In the US, Arby’s launches a new Mr. Men and Little Miss running now through January 2011.  Arby’s restaurants (3,500 participating stores) will offer six different character figurines (Little Miss Sunshine, Mr. Tickle, Little Miss Daredevil, Mr. Happy, Mr. Strong and Little Miss Helpful) and branded meal bags. The promotion will be supported in-store and via Facebook, twitter, online advertising, and a splash page at arbys.com (
  • www.arbys.com ).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop names Dr. Charlotte Frances Cole as SVP/Global Education.  She will be responsible for Sesame Workshop’s worldwide strategies and lead the development of curriculum and research around its international projects. Dr. Cole has worked with Sesame Workshop as part of its Education, Research and Outreach team since 1994.

Peanuts Worldwide, a joint venture of Iconix Brand Group and Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, appoints Tamra Knepfer to EVP/Peanuts Worldwide and promotes Helene Gordon to SVP/Brand Management, Peanuts Worldwide.  Knepfer, who has toiled for Disney, Sesame Workshop and American Greetings, will report directly to Yehuda Shmidman, COO/Iconic Brand Group.

Cartoon Network‘s premiere of Scooby-Doo! Curse Of The Lake Monster on Saturday, October 16, 7-8:50p, becomes the network’s top telecast of the year-to-date and the top show in its Saturday night time period among Total Viewers 2+ (5.1 million), K2-11 (2.7 million), K6-11 (1.9 million), Tweens 9-14 (1.3 million).  Delivery for the movie’s premiere among kids and boys demos grew each half-hour, including a +28% increase from the first half-hour to the final 20 minutes among boys 6-11 (1.2 million).  The performance also ranks as the most-watched telecast among targeted viewers since 2009’s original movie, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins (9/13/09).
