Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Cartoon Network will premiere Green Lantern: The Animated Series with an hour-long special on Friday, November 11 at 7p. The special is a precursor to the new CG animated series of the same name, which will officially launch on the network as part of the new DC Nation programming block next year. Fans can watch a sneak peek of the first scene at http://mediatogo.thewb.com/ny-comiccon/cc-2011/latest-videos/green-lantern-the-animated-series-nycc-2011/ . Based on DC Comic‘s Green Lantern, the new CG animated Green Lantern: The Animated Series is from Warner Bros. Animation and noted producer/artist/animator Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League). Timm and Warner Bros. Animation’s Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, batman: The Brave and the Bold) serve as executive producers. Giancarlo Volpe (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender) is the producer, and Jim Krieg (Ben 10: Alien Swarm) is the producer/story editor. DC Comics will release a Green Lantern: The Animated Series comic book as a companion to the new series and the first issue will be released to coincide with the November special on Cartoon Network.
Brand Licensing Europe 2011 opens its doors in London today, where 250+ exhibitors, 90 of which are new to the show, will showcase over 2,200 properties during the three-day event. Michael Acton Smith, creator of Moshi Monsters will offer the keynote address.
Aardman Rights, the marketing, licensing and international TV distribution arm of Aardman Animation, acquires all EMEA merchandising rights for Little Airplane‘s preschool animated series Small Potatoes (26×3). Aardman Rights will develop and implement a merchandise platform including publishing (outside of Penguin, which has rights), promotions, DVD and interactive for the property. Small Potatoes can currently be seen on CBeebies in the UK, Canal+ and Piwi in France, and Disney Junior in the US.
UK-based Lisle International prepares for Brand Licensing Europe (BLE), which begins today, by signing a new license deal with Character Options for 9 Story Entertainment’s animated series Almost Naked Animals. Character Options will develop micro figures and construction sets based on the property for the UK under its Character Building banner. The Licensing Shop granted Lisle International the UK rights to Almost Naked Animals on behalf of 9 Story Entertainment. Almost Naked Animals can be seen in the UK on CITV and ITV1.
Target Entertainment becomes the exclusive worldwide agent for the new interactive preschool series Abadas (52×11), which officially launches at Brand Licensing Europe this week. Created by the Welsh-based studio Dinamo Productions (Rastamouse) as a way to help kids learn language through play, features music and encourages movement, Abadas will premiere Monday, October 24, 2011 on CBeebies (England), BBC Alba (Scotland), S4C (Wales), and RTE (Ireland). Target Entertainment was acquired by The Metrodome Group in August 2010.
Atlantyca Entertainment has been appointed as the licensing agent in Italy for new The Little Prince (52×26) 3D animated HD series, which is based on the classic book by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The new deal furthers Atlantyca’s licensing rights for The Little Prince, which includes the classic The Little Prince intellectual property under a an earlier deal with France-based SOGEX, which represents Saint-Exupery’s heirs. Atlantyca will manage the licensing and merchandising programs throughout the region and identify opportunities in key licensing categories including stationery, homewares, gift, novelties, games, and apparel. The Little Prince animated series will premiere in Italy on Rai 2 on Saturday, December 3, 2011, where the series will air regularly on Saturdays and Sundays.
Fox Consumer Products (FCP) arrives at Brand Licensing Europe today having inked a number of new European licensees for the newest animated Ice Age movie from Fox and Blue Sky Studio, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift, and the first holiday TV special, Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas, across categories including toys, apparel, publishing and health and beauty, and is looking for further partners. Ice Age 4: Continental Drift releases in theaters in 3D July 2012. The holiday TV special Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas, scheduled to air in Europe on broadcasters including Channel 4 (UK), RTL (Germany), TF1 (France) and Channel 1 (Russia). New Ice Age licensee deals include:
- The Promotions Factory (figurines and playsets) they were a toy partner for Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs; Carta Mundi (playing cards); Eurosales (arts and crafts products); new Ice age plush licensees for various territories include Gipsy (France and Benelux), Kayford Holdings (Germany), Trudy (Italy), Play By Play (Spain), Neco Dis Tic (Turkey), and AST (Russia).
- Panini (also a previous Ice Age partner) signs on as the worldwide partner for sticker albums.
- European retailer C&A will create an apparel collection for kids, which is set to launch for spring/summer 2012.
- UK-based toiletries distributor SERT-MST is developing a range of products, including gift sets targeting boys and girls.
Where’s Wally? (known in the US as Where’s Waldo?) – the answer is all over the place as Classic Media completes more license deals for the property in Australia, Japan and Western Europe, on the heels of recent agreements across the UK.
- Licensing agent Stella Projects inks deals for Australia and New Zealand across various categories including: John Sands (calendars); Smiffy’s (mens costumes); Kinnerton Australia (advent calendars); Designworks (mens apparel and accessories); Thos Holdsworth & Son/Leisure Dynamics NZ (games and puzzles); The Five Mile Press (floor puzzles); Modern Brands (games and puzzles); Simson Cards and Image Galley (distributing the range of greetings cards from Woodmansterne) and Artico Pty Ltd (distributing giftware from Half Moon Bay). Additionally, Where’s Wally? has been a feature of the BPay payment service’s print/online and outdoor campaign BPay. Almost Too Easy. Where’s Wally also launched the first license program for family-aimed chain restaurant, Red Rooster.
- Buildou, Where’s Wally agent for Japan, launches a consumer products program featuring licensees: Sega (arcade game); Delfino (diaries and photo albums); Ensky (calendars and puzzles); KD System (accessories); Watanabe (men/women’s apparel and accessories including the iPhone cover), Skater (melamine); SunStar (stationery); Broccoli (travel card holder); Kokka (fabric); Benelic (kids melamine); Marimo Craft (assorted novelty); Run’A (assorted novelty); Morimoto Industry (novelty); Dix-Sept (stationery and novelty); UTE (women accessories); Small Planet (accessories and socks); Sun Arrow (plush); Kutsuwa (accessories, homeware and footwear); and Takara Tomy (stationery and novelty). Where’s Wally is also “popping up” at retail pop-up shops at various locations.
- Marathon Media‘s, the agent for France, newest deals include: Alcara (cake charms); Alpa (back-to-school stationery); Grund (stationery); and Ravensburger (puzzles and board games). A Where’s Wally? inspired exhibition featuring photos by Max& Charlotte has already opened in France and will move to various locations in the next year.
- Licensing agent CPLG completes deals for Western Europe Benelux, Germany/Austria/Switzerland, Iberia and Italy: Euro Prosem (young men/women apparel t-shirts, nightwear, and underwear for retailer Pull and Bear); DuMont (calendars for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
General Mills and DC Entertainment combine forces to encourage kids to read by creating exclusive comic books featuring DC Comics’ Super Heroes, including the Justice League, which are available in Big G cereal boxes. In total of up to 12 million comic books will be offered to consumers through the promotion, while supplies last.
Cartoon Network Enterprises teams with Bandai America and D3Publisher for a new Ben 10: Become a Plumber, Save the Universe sweepstakes that launches this week and runs through February 29, 2012. To participate fans can go online to helpBen10.com ( www.helpben10.com ) and help out in a series of missions that, once completed, will get them inducted into the secret Plumbers Society, just like in the animated series Ben 10 Ultimate Alien. Those that complete all 10 missions will receive a limited edition Plumbers Badge. After completing each individual mission, players will be entered into sweepstakes to win a grand prize. Additionally, to take part in the sweepstakes, kids have to look for a mystery code in participating Ben 10 products that feature the contest on the package of products including Bandai’s Ben 10 toy line and D3Publisher’s Ben 10 Galactic Racing, available this month. Each code will unlock online missions and enters them in a chance for the grand prize.

PBS Kids will host the broadcast premiere of the original Curious George movie on Wednesday, November 23 (check local listings), which will air as part of the three movie Curious George Holiday Spectacular. The Holiday Spectacular kicks off with Curious George, which features the voices of Will Ferrell as the Man in the Yellow Hat, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke, as well as the music of Jack Johnson, followed by Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey and Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas. Encore presentations of the Holiday Spectacular will air on PBS Kids throughout Thanksgiving weekend.
Flair, a subsidiary of Giochi Preziosi, partners with Turner CN Enterprises for an on-air Puppy in my Pocket: Adventures in Pocketville bumper package on Boomerang in the UK. Turner Media Innovations, the advertising and media consultancy arm of Turner Broadcasting, has produced a sponsorship campaign that will feature Toys R Us as the brand sponsor for bumpers around the girl-targeted TV series. The first of the four versions of the bumper promotion are airing now and will continue throughout October.
HIT Entertainment bolsters its digital portfolio with new apps and “CGI look” websites for its preschool brands set to launch this year. Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam get their first mobile apps this winter, both developed by P2 Games for iOS devices with the possibility of versions for Android and other platforms. A new updated website for Bob the Builder ( www.bobthebuilder.com ), developed by Funny Garbage, will launch in the UK this month featuring a “CGI look” and a new integrated video player, enhanced games and activities. HIT and Callaway Digital Arts partner for two new Thomas & Friends mobile apps, the book app Day of the Diesels debuts this month, which will be followed by the new Thomas & Friends games app Engine Activities this December. Additionally, Very Memorable is developing a new online Thomas & Friends game to launch on www.thomasandfriends.com later this year. Finally, a new Mike the Knight ( www.miketheknight.com ) website developed by Primal Screen with Nelvana and HIT will launch around the world later this month.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Lionsgate appoints Lawrence Szabo as EVP/North American Television Sales. An 18-year veteran of MGM’s Worldwide Television Group, Szabo was most recently based in London and served as SVP/MGM Worldwide Television Group and co-Managing Director for EMEA. Based at Lionsgate’s Santa Monica, California headquarters, Szabo will report to Jim Packer, President/Worldwide Television Distribution and Digital Operations. Szabo’s North American distribution responsibilities will include sales of all Lionsgate TV content across all platforms in the US and all new TV content to digital and traditional media platforms in Canada as well as coordinating with Alliance Films on distribution of the Lionsgate filmed entertainment library in Canada. Additionally, Lionsgate announces that David Nonaka, who was recently upped to EVP/Business and Legal Affairs, assumes fulltime legal oversight of worldwide TV licensing.
Warren Franklin CEO, Rainmaker Entertainment ( www.rainmaker.com ) has exited the company. The board of directors announces that its current President and Executive Producer Catherine Winder will lead the Canadian CG animation studio. In addition to the production of the studio’s first feature film, Escape from Planet Earth for The Weinstein Company, Rainmaker is working on several Mattel based DVD’s and has a slate of properties in development. The company recently released its’ original short film Luna, which has is being shown a range of industry festivals and events. Founded as Mainframe Entertainment, the studio’s first CGI animated series was ReBoot.

Disney Channels‘ dance competition Make Your Mark: ‘Shake It Up’ Edition drew 4.2 million Total Viewers on Friday, October 14, 8:30-9:58p and then for the results show on Sunday, October 16, 8:30-9p 4.0 million total viewers. The telecasts were tops in their time slot on Friday with K6-11 (2.0 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.6 million), and similarly with the same demos on Sunday’s results show with K6-11 (2.2 million) and with Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million). Mark Your Mark: ‘Shake It Up’ Edition received 30,000+ dance videos submissions online, resulting in 42+ million video starts since early summer 2011.
