CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

10/18/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, October 18, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

And the new co-anchors of ABC News Nightline are …. <<insert drumroll sound here>> … Martin Bashir, Cynthia McFadden and Terry Moran, who will all be on hand on Monday November 28.  Mr. Bashir will be based in New York along with Ms. McFadden, while Terry Moran will be based in Washington.  The format will include multiple topics.  While fulfilling their co-anchor positions on Nightline, Cynthia McFadden and Martin Bashir will continue with their anchoring positions on Primetime and 20/20, respectively.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Nickelodeon:  Fatherhood at 930p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

MTV‘s launch of their new series Run’s House last Thursday at 1030p and more than 3.3 million total viewers tuned in.  The show delivered a 1.8 P12-34 rating, ranking #1 in the time period in that demo among all basic cable.

Debmar-Mercury Entertainment has acquired U.S. syndication and basic cable rights to USA Network’s drama series The Dead Zone, which will be available as of Fall 2006. The one-hour series, produced by Lions Gate Television and CBS Paramount International Television in association with Piller² and The Segan Company, is licensed internationally by CBS Paramount International Television

IFC Films has picked up the Toronto International Film Festival title Pierrepoint, according to Hollywood Reporter.  At the film festival, the film went under the title The Last Hangman, written by Jeff Pope and starring Timothy Spall.  The story is about the British hangman Albert Pierrepoint who sent upwards of 450 people to their death between 1934 and 1956. The film is expected to be aired on IFC this summer or early next fall.

Two new series coming to BBC America Conviction is a crime drama set to join the lineup in early 2006; and Murder Prevention is also a crime drama that will launch in the spring.  Both drama series have six episodes.  BBC America has also scheduled a feature film: The Queen’s Sister about Princess Margaret, scheduled to air this spring.

It’s just hard to get out of Rachael Ray‘s way these days.  She has four series currently airing on Food Network including her longlasting 30-Minute Meals; she’s primed and set to roll out a new syndicated series with King World for next fall; and now a magazine: Every Day with Rachael Ray, published by The Reader’s Digest Association.  The all-food any-cook-can-do-it glossy is set to launch on October 25 and will be published twice monthly.

Last Friday I asked you this questionA few years ago I asked you what you thought about networks using the lower third for promotions, up next messaging, promotional crawls, etc.  In general at the time, most figured it was a necessary evil, and as long as it didn’t interfere with the program
being watched, you could live with it.  Since then, those lower thirds have grown considerably, are often animated with little people and/or animals running about, moving twisting morphing logos and show names.  So how do you feel about them now, both as a viewer and as an industry person?
And here’s how you responded:  8% were okay with them for various reasons (see below); while 92% were not okay.  In fact, the adjective most used to describe how you felt about lower-third promos was “hate,” often used in succession, i.e., “hate hate hate.” Here’s some of your reasons:

For ’em:

  • Lower Third advertising works for me. It’s a great reminder as a viewer, b/c it often reminds me of a show I might have forgotten about or builds interest in a new show coming to air.
  • In a world where TiVo is not only a device but a verb and appointment television has given way to time shifting and optional commercials, marketers and advertisers are forced to promote during programming instead of commercial breaks.
  • They’re such precious promotion time, I can’t ever advocate getting rid of them. I think people are well past being annoyed by them, and most probably have evolved to ignore them if they are.   (perhaps, but read on ….)

Agin’ ’em:

  • Should we producers open each scene now with an establishing shot to buy some time to get the audience attention back from the break that won’t end?
  • I doubt that network suits or promo people would tolerate or appreciate their presentations being repeatedly interrupted by an ostentatious carnival barker trying to sell something, completely unrelated to their pitch.
  • Kinda like jumping up during the closing lines of the preacher’s sermon and shouting “Hey, we’re eating at Outback when the prayer’s over!”

And those networks you identified most frequently as the biggest offenders in “distracting, annoying” lower thirds are: MTV, VH1, E!, ESPN, USA, TNT, FX, NBC, WB, Bravo and whoever had The Incredible Hulk promo a couple of weeks ago with the Hulk growing to nearly 3/4 of the screen height. You know who you are.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Fox:

  • The network has ordered a pilot for the comedy project 30 Year Old Grandpa from Ashton Kutchner’s Katalyst Television and 20th. The premise is loosely based on Kutchner’s life, about a young guy who marries a woman with kids nearly his age. The script will be written by Holly Hester.
  • Fox has also ordered a script from Katalyst called Parenteen, an unscripted series that focuses on the ups and downs of being a teenager. This project would be produced by 20th’s Fox 21. says Variety
  • Genetically Challenged is a comedy project from Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, and produced by Warner Bros. TV.  The show, written by Steve Leff, focuses on a young attorney who is trying mightily to shed some of the genetic quirks given him by his parents, according to Variety.  Cast in the lead role is Coby Ryan McLaughlin.

ABC has ordered a pilot for a comedy project called A Day in the Life from Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, and produced by Sony Pictures Television. Per Variety, the show will follow the “24” format, with each season focusing on a single yet monumental day in the lives of a young married couple.

Casting Call for Yo Momma: Are you a young adult living the LA area?  Can you talk smack and tell the best Yo Momma jokes?  This Wilmer Valderamma-created and hosted show for MTV is looking for contestants.  For more info, contact 818-557-1138 or
.

You know I nearly never talk about guest appearances in upcoming episodes of regularly primetime fare.  But this one is worth noting.  Michael J. Fox will appear in three episodes of ABC’s Boston Legal.  Fox plays a character named Daniel Post, described by ABC as “a charismatic and dynamic CEO with an affection for gallows humor who manages to charm everyone he meets.” He character is also terminally ill.  Fox’s three episodes are scheduled to air in late December and early January.

* NEW CARRIAGE/LAUNCH DEALS *

Time Warner Cable will now offer ImaginAsian Entertainment, Inc.’s ImaginAsian TV (iaTV) as part of a new national carriage deal.  The channel will be available on TWC’s LA digital basic tier on channel 134.  TWC already offers iaTV’s Hit Asian Film Festival through iN DEMAND Networks.  In addition, the Asian American TV network has signed on with Charter Communications, Inc. for airing on its LA cable system as of last week on channel 143.

Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.’s newest on-demand network, TV Guide SPOT, will be carried on Insight Communication’s The Free Spot VOD Service.  Other programming from Gemstar-TV Guide already a part of Insight’s service includes the TV Guide Channel, the interactive program i-Guide, and the network’s horseracing network TVG Network.  TV Guide SPOT is available in 12 million homes via Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House Networks digital cable homes.

 * RATINGS *

Saturday — A18-49 Analysis:   NBC won the night on Saturday with a 2.7/9 A18-49 rating, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  Fast Affiliate Ratings provide numbers from time periods only – not program, and those numbers can easily change when the finals come out, particularly those for live sports events.  With all that said, let’s move on thru the night.  At 8p NBC delivered a 2.7/9, while CBS and Fox tied at a 6 share. At 9p NBC was again in front with a 2.7/9, with CBS close behind with a 2.5/8 for a repeat of CSI Miami.  The third hour of NASCAR on NBC tied with CBS at 10p, each earning a 2.6/8.

Fast Affiliate Ratings (measuring time period only!):  Saturday, October 15, 2005, for all Networks – time period averages.  Source: Nielsen Media Research.

CBS     5.8/11   Cold Case [r] 4.8/9, CSI: Miami [r] 6.3/11, 48 Hours Mystery 6.2/11

NBC     4.8/9    NASCAR 2005-2006 4.8/9

ABC     2.8/5    Lost [r] 2.6/5, Invasion [r] 2.4/4, Commander in Chief [r] 3.4/6

A18-49            NBC 2.7/9, CBS 2.2/7, Fox 1.9/6, ABC 1.2/4

Sunday — A18-49 Analysis:   ABC won the night on Sunday by a wide margin, posting an overall 7.4/18 A18-49 according to fast affiliate numbers from Nielsen Media Research.  Remember again the speech about fast affiliate ratings above – they apply here too.  Football on CBS ran over significantly, pushing their primetime back, and again Fox had the NLCS playoff game.  Prudent here to apply the ratings numbers to the time period, not the show.  At 7p CBS’s football runover earned a 5.3/16; Fox was close behind with a 4.3/13. At 8p ABC’s EM: Home Edition took over the lead with a 6.5/16, and CBS was #2 with a 4.0/10.  At 9p Desperate Housewives leaves ABC anything but desperate with a whopping 11.2/25.  At 10p ABC kept up the momentum with Grey’s Anatomy earning an 8.6/21.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM COURT TV

Everybody says that it’s all in your head…

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1867-The American flag flies over Alaska for the first time, marking formal possession of the territory by the United States.  Russia found the territory unprofitable and its efforts to maintain a presence there expensive.  Accordingly, Alaska’s 591,000 square miles of territory were sold to the United States for $7 million.  At roughly the same time, New York City bought most of what would become Central Park for a little more than $5 million.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Ralph Furley was the neurotic landlord to the “Three’s Company” gang.  Several times throughout the series he mentions his intimidating brother.  What was the other Furley brother’s first name?   BART     Kudos to: Ross Kramer-Viacom/Boston; Jennifer Gebhardt-Meltzer Media/NYC; Valerie Cooley-Elliott-D.M. & M/Reston Va; Adam Lubkin-WFOR/CBS4/Miami; Larry Glazer-Katz Continental TV Sales/Chicago; Kristina Emerson-Nielsen Media Research/Chicago; John Heiser-o2 ideas/Birmingham AL; Kandy Hartsfield-KDAF/Dallas; Jason Koyama-Horizon Media/LA; Cat Jossell-Synergy Management/Calabasas CA; Caroline Perry-Compass Advertising Inc/Beverly Hills; Max Straight-Laser Pacific Media Corp/LA;
