BabyFirst unveils plans to create primetime programming specifically targeted to moms/parents, which it will launch in 2013. To lead its new primetime effort, Paul Frank joins the company as EVP/Series development.
Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, unveils plans to release for the first time ever Diary of a Wimpy Kid eBooks. The first six books in author/illustrator Jeff Kinney’s Wimpy Kid series will be available for download on October 30, 2012. The seventh book in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, will debut simultaneously as an eBook and in hardcover on November 13, 2012. The new eBooks will be branded with their own unique name and logo, Wimp-E-Books. There are 75+ million Wimpy Kids books in print in 41 languages in 44+ countries. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has been available in printed versions only since the first book was published in 2007. Before the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books were published, stories from the first three books appeared digitally for free on the website www.funbrain.com, where they are still available.

LICENSING
The Jim Henson Company appoints Turner CN Enterprises the consumer products licensing rights for the new preschool-targeted CG animated series Doozers across EMEA. A co-production between The Jim Henson Company and DHX Media, the new CG animated series Doozers features the adored characters from Fraggle Rock, the iconic 1980s mixed live action puppet series. The Doozers series was introduced to international buyers last week at MipJunior in Cannes. Doozers is already set to reach 125 million homes across EMEA via Turner Broadcasting’s preschool channel Cartoonito, where the series will debut in fall 2013 which also happens to coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the original Fraggle Rock show. The EMEA broadcast launch of Doozers will be supported by a cross category licensing program, which includes merchandising, publishing and promotions. The series-based products will reflect the themes of the series including invention, imaginative play, friendship and eco-awareness.
Mind Candy expands Moshi Monsters across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Australasia as it enters into new international consumer products agency deals including: European Licensing Company (Poland); YPL (Israel); Pacific Licensing (SE Asia); Exim (Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia); Tycoon (Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Central America); East West Licensing (Middle East). Mind Candy has also renewed its licensing deals with The Fusion Agency (Australasia) and CLM (South Africa).
Italian producer/distributor/licensor Rainbow finalizes a number of new licensing agents for its girl-targeted Winx Club brand around the world. Signing on as new licensees are: CPLG (Germany and Benelux); RBW (Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand); Tuesday – Bates Group (Indonesia); License2Brand (Greece); and FWD Licensing (UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Oman, Saudi-Arabia, Tunisia and Morocco). The Winx Club is headed into its fifth season. Winx Club dolls are produced for the worldwide market by Witty Toys, part of the Rainbow Group, except in North America, Australia and New Zealand and UK where Jakks Pacific is the master toy licensee producing and distributing the dolls. There have been more than 10 new doll collections planned for 2012, inspired by brand new season 5 of Winx Club, which is currently in co-production with Nickelodeon and set to launch this fall.
Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Company ink a number of new licensing deals in EMEA for the Babar brand ahead of Brand Licensing Europe 2012. ITV Studios Global Entertainment will represent the UK licensing rights for Babar – with an initial product line based on vintage Babar and targeted to preschool, nursery and gifting categories. The deal also includes the current CG-animated TV series Babar and the Adventures of Badou, which broadcasts on CITV (UK); In Russia, Rio Licensing signs on as an agent, a master toy deal has been completed with Vita-Alisa; In France, agent TF1 Licences signs deals with Lansay (fire truck, among others), Lisciani Giochi (toys), Cooper (pharmacy), School Pack (back-to-school), Papo (PVC figurines), Riethmuller (party goods) and Worlds Apart (bedroom accessories); in Germany through agent M4e, new licensees are Hutter Trade (board games) and Nelson (publishing); and in Portugal, Popcorn signs on as a new agent for the property, and new licensees include Booksmile (publishing) and Artimbal (back-to-school).
American Greetings Properties (AGP) appoints six new agents across EMEA as it prepares for the 2013 worldwide re-launch of Care Bears. The six agents include East West Licensing (Middle East), JLB Licensing Inc. (Turkey), Plus Licens AB (Scandinavia and Eastern Europe), Point of View (Israel), RIO Licensing (Russia) and JT Licensing Co. (Greece). The Care Bears re-launch consists of an all-new CGI animated TV series, Hasbro toys in key territories, and global retail partnerships.
TOMY and Ludorum announce the UK and European launch of the Chuggington Stack Track system an addition to the Chuggington Die-Cast Railway. The new line will be available at retailers in the UK and Europe from 2013. The new Chuggington Stack Track system debuted at retail in the US in August 2012. This new track system allows kids to stack their track high. In addition, every playset in the Chuggington Die-Cast Railway can be built multiple ways, encouraging kids to use their imaginations to create, construct and play.
CBS Consumer Products arrives at Brand Licensing Europe 2012 with new international deals for several of its TV franchises some of which are kid and family friendly. Some of the new international licensing deals include:
- New partners set to create products based on Star Trek include: Cotton Divisions (t-shirts, sweatshirts, zip hoodies, pajamas, caps, and belts) for France; Guild Jewelry (necklaces, rings, pendants, brooches, charms, bracelets and cufflinks) for fans in Australia and New Zealand; Pyramid (prints and posters, including The Original Series Art Prints collection) for the UK; In Japan, Tokugawa (computer and mobile games); Also for the UK there is a deal with manufacturer Will Technology (tech accessories for video games, mobile phone and PC systems).
- In Canada, NRG will manufacture t-shirts based on shows under the Television City banner for series including Mighty Mouse, The Twilight Zone, The Little Rascals, Rawhide, The Beverly Hillbillies, Happy Days, Beverly Hills 90210, Cheers, Taxi and The Brady Bunch.
- ShirtPunch! will offer fans limited edition products based on Cheers, Charmed, CSI: Miami, Happy Days, Dexter and NCIS. The deals will only be available for 24 hours and include prints, magnets, hoodies and t-shirts.
The Collective names Henson Independent Properties (HIP), the third party licensing arm of The Jim Henson Company, as the exclusive international distributor of the Annoying Orange broadcast series. Under the deal HIP represents The Annoying Orange distribution for TV, home entertainment and digital platforms. The first season of Annoying Orange is currently airing on Cartoon Network (US). HIP showcased the property at MipJunior and Mipcom last week, and will also offer it at Singapore’s Asian Television Forum in December.
Zodiak Kids partners with Abbey Home Media to produce a new Mister Maker DVD, titled Mister Make Watch and Make 4, which will be available from November 5, 2012. The DVD also includes a free craft pack for preschoolers to make their own Twiggy the Giraffe toy, from the Mini Makes line by Creativity International. Additionally, Zodiak Kids teams with developers Bionic Communications to launch a new website for the series Mister Maker at www.mistermaker.com. The new website offers kids and parents a range of simple art activities that allow kids to use their hands and imaginations to experiment.
Italy’s Medianetwork acquires the first season of Pukeko Pictures‘ preschool series The WotWots on Planet Kids, a new Pay TV channel on Sky platform in Italy, in a deal brokered by American Greetings Properties (AGP), which is the global licensing agent for the brand. The WotWots is slated to debut on Planet Kids this month.
Lionsgate Home Entertainment releases Power Rangers Samurai: Christmas Together, Friends Forever, a new holiday-themed title for DVD and Digital Download today, Tuesday, October 16, 2012. The title features three holiday episodes of Saban‘s Power Rangers, Samurai Power Rangers: Christmas Together, Friends Forever, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – I’m Dreaming of a White Ranger, Zeo Power Rangers – A Season to Remember. The DVD also includes special features, two videos, Power Rangers Swarm and Train Like a Ranger videos, as well as Mega Bloks Holiday Toymation.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment promotes two in a realignment of the division’s marketing management under President and CMO, Worldwide Marketing Mary Daily, in an effort to promote growth, creativity and integration of strategic initiatives across all existing and emerging platforms worldwide. Vincent Marcais is upped to EVP/Worldwide Brand Marketing from his previous position as SVP/International Marketing. James Finn is promoted to the newly created position of SVP/Worldwide Communications, Media and Partnerships. Finn expands his domestic responsibilities to include international publicity and corporate communications, while taking on oversight of Media and Marketing Partnerships and Promotions for the division. Both will report to Daily and oversee campaigns for all Fox film and TV programming, and third party distribution partners.
BabyFirst appoints Paul Frank as EVP/Series Development. Based in the channel’s LA headquarters, Frank will work with producers in the US and around the world to develop original series for parents. Frank will report to CEO, Guy Oranim. A TV veteran, Frank joins BabyFirst from Prospect Park, a music, TV and film production company, where he was Head of Television/Executive Producer and served as an executive producer on USA Network’s Royal Pains and FX’s Wilfred. He previously headed the TV department at the talent agency The Firm.
