Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, October 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
YouTube unveiled its long-awaited copyright protection filtering system designed to automatically notify copyright holders when their work is unlawfully uploaded to the site. The technology promises to identify repeat infringers and ban them from site, block identical copies from being re-uploaded and provide electronic notification and takedown tools to simplify the process. The onus is on rights holders to submit content first so that YouTube can build a database of protected files. Time Warner, Disney, Hearst-Argyle and CBS Interactive are among the companies to have tested the system.
Led Zeppelin is finally ready to show a whole lotta love toward digital platforms. The band has licensed ringtones and downloads of some of its songs to Verizon Wireless, which go on sale this week, and digital tracks to online music stores such as iTunes that will become available beginning Nov. 13 as the band prepares for a reunion gig in London. Led Zep recently signed a $60 million/10 year distribution deal with Warner/Chappel music.
Sprint launched Sprint Exclusive Entertainment, the first wireless TV network to be produced in house by a major U.S. carrier. SEE offers Sprint Power Vision data subscribers access to more than 150 free music, sports and entertainment programs a week, co-produced by Intersport. Talent includes former VH1 VJ Rachel Perry, NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk and celebrity commentator Kelli Zink.
ABC Family will premiere its first online reality show “Rush’d” on October 22 on social networking site VirtualRush.com. A spin off from the original series Greek, the show documents the audition experience of 6 finalists selected for the on-air version, which became ABC Family’s highest rated original series this year.
Lifetime Networks launched its multiplatform “Every Woman Counts’ get-out-the-vote campaign partnering for the first time with Hearst Magazines Redbook, CosmoGIRL!, Marie Claire and several leading non-profits. A dedicated website features celebrity interviews, live chats, online voter registration, blogs, networking and links to additional resources.
Starz High-def movie channels Starz Comedy HD, Starz Edge HD and Starz Kids & Family HD launched on DirecTV, offered together with the flagship Starz HD East and West feeds.
Meanwhile ESPN said ESPNEWS HD will launch on March 30, 2008, complete with new “Sideline” graphics that streams news, stats, scores and headshots below the video. DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner Cable have agreed to carry the network so far.
Overbuilder RCN is now offering broadband services ESPN360.com and ABC News Now to its high speed internet customers.
YouTube announced plans to launch a site in India early next year, which currently contributes about 1% of YouTube’s overall traffic.
Video sharing site Dailymotion announced new content/ad revenue sharing agreements with:
- Next New Networks, including content form current and future micro networks
- TBS Europe, offering European audiences from CNN Int’l, Adult Swim and men’s channel Nuts TV
- Sí TV, covering original programming including music, comedy, lifestyle and talk
- ComedyTime, offering comedic web shorts in the new dedicated Funny Channel
Stardoll announced a partnership with GMG Entertainment to begin marketing prepaid sales cards at retail outlets in the U.S. The cards, available in increments of $10-$25, translate to virtual “Stardollars” for use to purchase virtual clothing, accessories and cosmetics for users’ “MeDoll” avatars.
NYC TV indie music show New York Noise launched a weekly video blog featuring insights about new bands, upcoming events and new venues in the city. It is available for embedding across the web.

The NAB released details of its “multiplatform, multifaceted campaign” to educate consumers on the switch to digital on Feb. 17, 2009, a media blitz calculated to reach 98 billion audience impressions valued at a total of $697 million. The campaign will include PSA’s, news tickers, online banner ads and a DTV roadshow scheduled to visit 600 locations nationwide.
Broadcom unveiled a next-generation processor that packs all the key 3G cellular and mobile technologies onto a single low power chip. The “3G Phone on a Chip” claims to be a year ahead of competing technologies and should help the company make up for lost ground in the mobile chip market.
All is fair in love and media wars. On the verge of being acquired by News Corp., Dow Jones pulled ads from Fox Business Network rival CNBC on MarketWatch.com and wsj.com, reports the New York Times. The sites pulled the ads despite signing a two month long contract with its longtime client CNBC that began with banner ad placements on Oct. 1.
Digital ad insertion company BlackArrow raised $12 million in second round financing led by Cisco Systems, Comcast Interactive Capital and Intel, among others. BlackArrow offers web streaming ad solutions and a technology that can serve static ads to DVRs when the video is paused. Former CTO of Knight Ridder Dean Denhart was named CEO of the start-up.
Close to 16% of American internet users watch full-length television shows online, according to a new report released by The Conference Board and TNS, double the amount recorded last year. Personal convenience and commercial avoidance were the two top motivating factors. Nearly 73 percent of online households said they use the internet for entertainment purposes on a daily basis and an additional 15 percent search for entertainment several times a week.
The Cinema Advertising Council reported a 15% increase of cinema ad revenues in 2006 over the previous year. On-screen ad revenues and off-screen promotions totaled $455.6 million for the year.
Nielsen restructured its digital measurement services to reflect recent acquisitions:
- Nielsen Online combines Nielsen/NetRatings and BuzzMetrics services, measuring online advertising, video, blogs, user generated media, etc. Itzhak Fisher, former Executive Chairman of BuzzMetrics, will lead Nielsen Online as Executive Chairman.
- Nielsen Mobile combines recently acquired telecom and mobile media research company Telephia with several existing initiatives including Nielsen Wireless and Nielsen RingScan. Sid Gorham, the former CEO of Telephia and a 20-year veteran of the telecom industry, has been named President/CEO of the division.
Stacey Lynn Schulman was appointed SVP/Entertainment Ad Sales Research for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. The former Interpublic Group research veteran will work in New York with Turner Entertainment Ad Sales President David Levy and the sales teams of all the Turner networks and report to Jack Wakshlag, Turner’s Chief Research Officer.
AOL CEO Randy Falco told employees the company will shed another 2,000 jobs on top of the 5,000 positions it eliminated last fall. No word yet on whether or not Time Warner will sell or spin off the unit. Reductions will begin today.
Current.com, formerly Current.tv – the online component to cable network Current TV, has completed a major relaunch. Intended to take advantage of the social news craze, it also does an admiral job of integrating the website with the network. Users are encouraged to link stories, create news/editorial videos, add video-opinions and upload “Vcams” (user-created ad messages). Internal tracking keeps track of the % of up and down votes received for submissions. Well-received producers stand a better chance of getting picked up by the network, based on the buzz submissions generate online. A new “on TV” section offers up shareable clips of what’s being CURRENTLY featured on air, offering the chance to respond or learn more about the topic.
