Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Veteran animation executive David Stainton joins Paramount Pictures as President, Paramount Animation; the studio’s recently launched in-house animation division. Stainton spent 17 years at Disney where he ultimately served as President of Disney Feature Animation, during which time the studio shifted from hand-drawn animation to fully digital animation production. Stainton oversaw Disney’s release of dozens of movie and also led Disney Video Premieres division, as well as overseeing the studios animation facility in Paris. Most recently, he was CEO and founder of Henry’s World Media, which produced family-targeted entertainment. Stainton will report to Adam Goodman, President/Paramount Motion Picture Group. Paramount Animation plans to produce animated feature films with per picture budgets of up to $100 million, and initially plans to release one picture a year. The division’s mission is to develop a broad range of family-targeted CGI animated features, with a key focus on titles under the Nickelodeon banner. Stainton will also further build on Viacom’s consumer products business by capitalizing on merchandising opportunities tied to all Paramount Animation releases. Earlier this year Paramount released the CGI animated movie Rango, which has grossed $240+ million worldwide, which will be followed by the studio’s release of The Adventures of Tintin, an animated movie from director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson, on December 21, 2011. Paramount also continues to release DreamWorks Animation movies through the end of its current contract that runs through 2012. There has been no public statement about whether that partnership will continue after 2012.
Jakks Pacific‘s Tollytots division inks a long term deal with Rubik’s Cube parent company Seven Towns Limited, to manufacture, distribute and market a new line of early learning preschool toys that will be called Rubik’s Clever Kids. The new Rubik’s Clever Kids toy line is designed to offer toys featuring a range of activities while bolster key developmental and motor skills through the use of colors, shapes and puzzle solving. The deal was brokered by The Sharpe Company, which represents Rubik’s Cube in North America on behalf of Seven Towns. Tollytots expects to launch the Rubik’s product line at retailers nationwide in fall 2012.
BRB Internacional heads to Brand Licensing Europe in London next week where it will present the first licensed products for its preschool series Kambu (52×7), and will also announce the European TV premiere of the series Canimals (52×7). Additionally, BRB will also showcase new deals and products for the Cartoon Network properties it manages across Spain and Portugal, including the market debut of Generator Rex. Master Toy partner Mattel has began launching Generator Rex toys in September in Spain. Activision will launch its video game Generator Rex, Agent of Providence in Spain in November.
Night & Day Studios in partnership with licensor Cookie Jar Entertainment and its licensing division CPLG, debuts a first Caillou mobile app for preschoolers, Caillou’s World. The new Caillou app is designed to help kids learn phonics, letter recognition, memorization and spelling in the familiar setting from the animated TV series. Caillou airs in the US on PBS Kids and Sprout. The Caillou app is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, and Android Tablet ($2.99), with more info available at www.caillou-apps.com .

It’s October, which means it is time for some Peanuts specials. ABC will air the Halloween Peanuts classic 1966 animated special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, created, of course, by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, as well as the special, You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown, back-to-back on Thursday, October 27, 8-9p. You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown was written by Schulz, directed by Melendez and produced by Mendelson and Bill. Both specials feature original music composed by Vince Guaraldi. The family specials are also broadcast with Spanish audio via SAP.
