Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 11, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Veteran animation executive David Stainton joins Paramount Pictures as President, Paramount Animation; the studio’s recently launched in-house animation division.  Stainton spent 17 years at Disney where he ultimately served as President of Disney Feature Animation, during which time the studio shifted from hand-drawn animation to fully digital animation production. Stainton oversaw Disney’s release of dozens of movie and also led Disney Video Premieres division, as well as overseeing the studios animation facility in Paris.  Most recently, he was CEO and founder of Henry’s World Media, which produced family-targeted entertainment.  Stainton will report to Adam Goodman, President/Paramount Motion Picture Group.  Paramount Animation plans to produce animated feature films with per picture budgets of up to $100 million, and initially plans to release one picture a year.  The division’s mission is to develop a broad range of family-targeted CGI animated features, with a key focus on titles under the Nickelodeon banner.  Stainton will also further build on Viacom’s consumer products business by capitalizing on merchandising opportunities tied to all Paramount Animation releases.  Earlier this year Paramount released the CGI animated movie Rango, which has grossed $240+ million worldwide, which will be followed by the studio’s release of The Adventures of Tintin, an animated movie from director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson, on December 21, 2011.  Paramount also continues to release DreamWorks Animation movies through the end of its current contract that runs through 2012.  There has been no public statement about whether that partnership will continue after 2012.

Jakks Pacific‘s Tollytots division inks a long term deal with Rubik’s Cube parent company Seven Towns Limited, to manufacture, distribute and market a new line of early learning preschool toys that will be called Rubik’s Clever Kids.  The new Rubik’s Clever Kids toy line is designed to offer toys featuring a range of activities while bolster key developmental and motor skills through the use of colors, shapes and puzzle solving.  The deal was brokered by The Sharpe Company, which represents Rubik’s Cube in North America on behalf of Seven Towns.  Tollytots expects to launch the Rubik’s product line at retailers nationwide in fall 2012.

BRB Internacional heads to Brand Licensing Europe in London next week where it will present the first licensed products for its preschool series Kambu (52×7), and will also announce the European TV premiere of the series Canimals (52×7).  Additionally, BRB will also showcase new deals and products for the Cartoon Network properties it manages across Spain and Portugal, including the market debut of Generator Rex.  Master Toy partner Mattel has began launching Generator Rex toys in September in Spain.  Activision will launch its video game Generator Rex, Agent of Providence in Spain in November.

Night & Day Studios in partnership with licensor Cookie Jar Entertainment and its licensing division CPLG, debuts a first Caillou mobile app for preschoolers, Caillou’s World.  The new Caillou app is designed to help kids learn phonics, letter recognition, memorization and spelling in the familiar setting from the animated TV series.  Caillou airs in the US on PBS Kids and Sprout.  The Caillou app is available for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, and Android Tablet ($2.99), with more info available at www.caillou-apps.com .

Walt Disney Records releases an album of songs based on Disney Channel‘s original series A.N.T. Farm, feature performances by members of the show’s cast, at retail today.  The album features classic songs sung by Hollywood Records artist and A.N.T. Farm star China Anne McClain, her sisters Sierra and Lauryn, and series co-star Stefanie Scott and Carlon Jeffery.  The series soundtrack includes the new single Calling All the Monsters.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) announce Bubbles, Blossom and Buttercup, aka The Powerpuff Girls, and Ben 10 are being featured in special boutique at the Toys “R” Us Times Square store in NYC throughout October.  The boutique marks the re-launch of The Powerpuff Girls at retail featuring a range of products across various categories from partners including Bioworld (t-shirts, hats, bags and accessories) and Vandor (luggage tags, totes), while also showcasing Ben 10 Ultimate Alien from partners including Bandai America (toy line), Warner Home Video (new DVD release) and Freeze (the new exclusive Ben 10 NYC apparel line).

Turner Broadcasting launches Cartoonito, its preschool TV programming block, in Africa on Boomerang (DSTV channel 302) this Wednesday, October 12, 2011.  Turner Broadcasting recently acquired the new Bananas in Pyjamas series, produced by Southern Star Entertainment/Southern Star Singapore, a division of Endemol Group in association with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, to debut as one of the flagship series on the bock.  The debut line up will also feature the new 3D animated series Jelly Jamm, which is co-produced by Spanish indies Vodka Capital, 737 Shaker and Radio Television Espanola. The preschool series, which is designed to encourage preschoolers to lead healthy and active lifestyles, will go into production early 2012.  Also joining Cartoonito across Africa will be the actual Cartoonitos, six animated character shapes that are featured in a wrap-around interstitial programming during the block.

It’s October, which means it is time for some Peanuts specials.  ABC will air the Halloween Peanuts classic 1966 animated special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, created, of course, by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, as well as the special, You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown, back-to-back on Thursday, October 27, 8-9p.  It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown was executive-produced by Lee Mendelson and created and written by Charles M. Schulz. Bill Melendez is the producer and director.  You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown was written by Schulz, directed by Melendez and produced by Mendelson and Bill.  Both specials feature original music composed by Vince Guaraldi.  The family specials are also broadcast with Spanish audio via SAP.

What are kids dressing up for this Halloween?  According to NRF‘s (National Retail Federation) 2011 Top Costume survey, conducted by BIGresearch, 2.6+ million kids, women and men are planning to raise the dead in zombie costumes this Halloween, which is a direct reflection of the popularity of zombies in books, TV, video games and so forth.  Americans are expected to spend $2.5 billion on Halloween costumes this year, per an NRF survey, with $1+ billion of that being spent on kid’s costumes, $1.2 on adult costumes, and $310 million on pet costumes.  Breaking that down a little further, the average person will spend $72.31 on Halloween candy, costumes and decor, which bring spending for the holiday to $6.86 billion the most in the history of the nine-year-old survey.
