Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

John WilliamsVanguard Films enters into an overall producing/directing deal with John Stevenson (co-director Kung Fu Panda).  Additionally, Vanguard forms a strategic alliance with former Lakeshore International President Peter Rogers‘ new company, Moviemill, to arrange financing and distribution for Vanguard’s movies.  Vanguard is attending AFM with a production slate of CG, live-action and mixed CG/live-action projects.  First up for Stevenson at Vanguard, he will direct the mixed live-action/CGI movie Alien Rock Band, with musician Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) serving as producer.  Alien Rock Band revolves around a garage band from Earth that travels across the Universe to qualify to take part in an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands … but the competition is otherworldly and somewhat gruesome, including bands with four-armed alien guitarists, and tentacled, punker octo-drummers among others.  Stevenson will also direct Vanguard’s CG-animated film Rotten Island, which is based on the book by William Steig (Shrek).  Additionally, Vanguard movies that Williams and Stevenson will produce include: Buzby, an animated romantic comedy about fruit flies, written by Jason Mayland, and directed by Phil Robinson (Hubert’s Brain); City of Dragons, a live-action martial arts movie with supernatural elements penned by Rob Moreland (Space Chimps); Atomic Circus, a live-action fantasy/adventure about a con-man in a post-apocalyptic world, written by Athena Gam.

Warner Bros. finalizes its purchase of Leavesden Studios, where all the Harry Potter movies were filed, and will invest US$162 million to create a UK TV and movie studio as well as creating a tour where fans can come and see the real Harry Potter movie sets, per the Digital Spy.  Slated to re-open its doors in 2012, the newly refurbished 170-acre site and production facility, Leavesden Studios, will be home to one of the largest TV/movie back-lot in Europe, and about a third of the movie soundstage space in the UK.  Warner Bros. has also filmed The Dark Knight and Inception at Leavesden.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Foothill Entertainment and Odyssey Pictures enter into a co-development deal, which includes both development project funding and joint business efforts.  The deal will make available funding to move specific Foothill projects to the next stages of development and also provide a first right of refusal to endow production. The deal begins with Foothill’s projects Gunk Aliens and My Momtourage and Me, and can be expanded to include further properties.  Gunk Aliens is based on a book series published in the UK by HarperCollins Children’s Books. My Momtourage and Me is an original tween-targeted property that revolves around the daughter of a world famous female pop star who, despite the glamorous lifestyle of her mom and the entourage of people that look after her, really only wants to live a normal life and wants a normal mom.  This marks Odyssey’s move into kid’s TV programming.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will delve into what life is like for some kids living in homes where they have a parent struggling with alcoholism in the new half-hour special Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, “Under the Influence: Kids of Alcoholics,” premiering Sunday, November 14 at 9p.  The special features five kids sharing what life is like for them and the help that is out there for their parents and their families.  The special also features Jerry Moe, National Director of Children’s Programs at Betty Ford.

Cake inks a broadcast deal for Fresh TV‘s tween-targeted animated series Stoked (26×22) to Germany’s KI.KA.  KI.KA, a joint venture of nine ARD channels and ZDF, will launch Stoked in early 2011, as part of its tween-targeted programming lineup.  Developed by Toronto-based Fresh TV for Canada’s Teletoon, Stoked is a comedy that follows the adventures of six teens who come together one summer to work (and surf) at the world renowned Surfer’s Paradise Resort.  In addition to Stoked, Cake also distributes Fresh TV’s animated Total Drama franchise.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Batman arena tour sets out around the world beginning summer 2011.  Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), DC Entertainment and Nick Grace of Water Lane Productions (WLP) unveils the schedule for its Batman Live ( www.batmanlive.com ) tour, which will debut first in the UK and Europe, beginning July 20, 2011, and then make its way to North America by summer 2012.  Tickets for the UK shows go on sale this Friday, November 12.  The Batman Live tour features an original story and lots of stunts, and will star Batman, Robin, Alfred and a host of villains including The Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman and The Penguin.

Jazwares has been awarded the master toy license for Poptropica ( www.poptropica.com ), the K8-12 aimed virtual world.  Under the deal, Jazwares will develop, manufacture and distribute a line of Poptropica action figures and plush toys for the US that are to be available in 2011.  Launched three years ago, Poptropica was conceived by Jeff Kinney, author of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, as a safe place for kids to play online and explore a growing number of ‘virtual islands.’  Poptropica reports that its kid players come from 100 different countries who play in 70 different languages.

Radio Disney gets into the holiday spirit in Chicago with a day of kid/family-targeted events on Sunday, November 20 at the 19th annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival ( www.themagnificentmile.com) presented by Harris.  The day will feature Radio Disney on-air talent Ernie D hosting a fee concert by Hollywood Records group Allstar Weekend (2p), Phineas and Ferb walk-around characters, as well as games and activities.  For more information about the Radio Disney AM 1300 concert go to radiodisney.com/chicago ( www.radiodisney.com/chicago ).

CPLG is appointed as licensing agent for British Airways.  CPLG is now looking for partners in all categories including, toiletries, accessories, games, publishing, greetings, art and gifting as well as travel and pampering, and fitness. In addition to traditional retail routes, licensees may have opportunities for in flight sales and online.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop names Laura Smith as VP/Formal Learning and Palak Solanki as VP/Business Planning and Analysis.

  • Smith will help the Workshop define and provide a significant educational experience for preschoolers in formal classrooms and centers across the US using Sesame Street’s educational assets, including instruction materials for kids and professional development for teachers, as well as new ways to engage parents to work with learn together at home.  Smith will report to Dr. Lewis Bernstein, EVP/Education, Research and Outreach.  Most recently, Smith was Assistant Commissioner/External Partnerships and Research, New York State Department of Education.
  • Solanki will be responsible for identifying and developing long term strategic business opportunities and evaluating potential acquisitions and other investments.  She will also be responsible for company-wide strategic planning efforts and analysis for initiatives and ventures. Solanki will report to Susan Kolar, Chief Strategy and Administrative Officer. She previously served as Director/Digital Sales Strategy & Business Development, MTVN.

RATINGS

Disney Channel‘s premiere Shake It Up, its new series on Sunday, November 7 at 8:30p, becomes the network’s second most watched series debut with Total Viewers (6.2 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.7 million), and the top Sunday premiere among Total Viewers, K6-11 (2.6 million) and Tweens 9-14.  The network’s most watched series premiere was Cory in the House (1/12/07) among Total Viewers (7.6 million) and Tweens 9-14 (3.4 million), which debuted following the premiere of the Disney Channel original movie Jump In.  Additionally, the lead-in to the Shake It Up’s debut was an hour-long episode of Hannah Montana Forever (7:30-8:30p) delivering a season high for the series, and also becomes the most watched telecast for the series in more than three years, among Total Viewers (7.1 million), K6-11 (2.6 million) and Tweens (2.8 million).
