Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The Pew Internet & American Life Project has released some data on the influence of online video during this year’s election cycle. According to the study, which polled a nationally representative survey of 1,006 adults from October 12 to 14, some 66% of internet-using registered voters have gone on the web to watch videos related to the election.Specific activities include:
- 48% of internet-using registered voters watch video news reports online concerning the election or politics in general.
- 40% watch videos of candidate speeches, press conferences, or debates on demand; 28% watch them live.
- 37% watch funny or parody videos online that with political issues.
- 36% watch political ads on the web.
Discovering political videos on the web also seems to be a highly social experience. Per the study, 62% of internet-using registered voters (which Pew says equals 52% of all registered voters) have had others recommend online videos to them about the election or politics. In addition, roughly 23% of internet-using registered voters have encouraged others to watch an online video related to political issues.
CBS shows are finally coming to Hulu in the US, well sort of. Beginning in January 2013, Hulu Plus subscribers will have access to over 2,600 episodes of CBS’ library series such as Medium, Numb3rs, and CSI: Miami, along with classics like Star Trek, I Love Lucy, and The Twilight Zone. In addition, clips from Entertainment Tonight will be made available on the day of the broadcast on both Hulu and Hulu Plus. The non-exclusive multiyear licensing deal also allows for a “selection” of CBS library shows to rotate through the free Hulu service. Additional titles will be announced on a rolling basis in the future. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CBS and Hulu have existing licensing agreements that cover CBS-produced programming that airs on The CW and CBS content on Hulu’s subscription service in Japan.
AwesomenessTV, one of the YouTube original content initiative channels, has launched a new series called Austin Mahone’s Takeover. The show follows the 16-year-old pop and R&B star as he gives a behind-the-scenes look into his life, which includes music video and photo shoots, concerts, and more.
The Ben Heck Show has returned for a third season on Revision3, an online video network purchased earlier this year by Discovery Communications. The show, which will air weekly, with each episode having a run time of about 10 minutes, tackles all sorts of gadget and tech-related questions and projects. For example, the first episode focuses on a new anti-texting device created by the host — a “master hacker, engineer, and conjurer of cool stuff” — to prevent people from using their device while inside of a moving vehicle. New segments on the show include “Ben’s Rants” and “Ask Ben Anything,” while the episodes in general will be filled with tips and informative tutorials related to that day’s topic.
BRB Internacional is making a selection of its animated series available on SuperPaquito, a tablet device from kids retailer Imaginarium designed specifically for children. The deal between BRB and Imaginarium encompasses titles such as Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, David the Gnome, Around the World with Willy Fog, Teo, Nicholas, and Bernard, all of which are already available in different languages. The content will also be available via PaquitoLand, a content platform that’s also accessible on a variety of other connected devices, including smartphones, other tablets, PCs, and Macs.
MTV has announced a new one-hour special to help NJ in the recovery and rebuilding process following the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. The special, dubbed Restore the Shore, will feature cast members of the network’s hit reality series The Jersey Shore (with other special guests to be announced at a later date) as they try to raise funds to contribute to the rebuilding of Seaside Heights, the center of the Jersey Shore (both the actual location and the show), which was one of the most severely hit regions in the Tri-State Area. MTV is partnering with Architecture for Humanity, a non-profit that provides design and construction services to communities in need. Restore the Shore will air Thursday, November 15 at 11pm ET, after which it will be available on-demand online and on mobile platforms. MTV says it also plans on setting up easy-to-use online and mobile giving tools so people can donate while the special airs live or when watching it on-demand.

MediaVest will also have access to Millennial’s Audience Insight reports, which offer brands data on the impact of their campaigns across over 600 consumer audience categories. MediaVest’s clients, which include the likes of The Coca-Cola Company, Comcast, Kraft Foods, Microsoft, and Procter & Gamble, can then use this data to optimize their future ad spend.
A new study from 451 Research’s ChangeWave service shows that while Netflix is still the king of “paid alternative TV providers,” Amazon Instant Video is gaining some ground among consumers. The September survey of 1,115 North American consumers found that among respondents who pay for online video, 82% subscribe to Netflix. In the last survey, which was administered six months prior, Netflix accounted for 84% of such respondents. Conversely, Amazon Instant Video jumped from 17% to 22% among consumers who pay for online video content. The other two notable providers among this particular crowd were iTunes (16%) and Hulu Plus (8%). Other findings from the survey include:
- 17% of Netflix subscribers said that EPIX no longer being available on exclusively on Netflix (via a recent deal with Amazon) makes them “more likely” to cancel their Netflix subscription. 65% said it has “no effect.”
- 18% of Netflix subscribers said they also pay for Amazon Instant Video (up 4 percentage points from the previous survey).
- Among respondents who own a connected device that allows them to stream video content, the iPad was the most popular device (32%) to engage in such an activity.
Worldwide tablet shipments totaled 27.8 million units in the third quarter of 2012, according to IDC. This represents a year-over-year growth of 49.5% as well as a quarter-over-quarter growth of 6.7%. The iPad kept its tight grip on the worldwide market as it accounted for 50.4% of all tablets shipped during the third quarter. To be fair, iPad’s shipment share did drop from the 65.5% it captured in Q2 of this year. But, as ABI notes, this slip can be attributed to people waiting for the introduction of the iPad Mini before deciding to buy a new tablet from Apple. “Now that the new Mini, and a fourth-generation full-sized iPad, are both shipping we expect Apple to have a very good quarter,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director/Tablets at IDC. That said, Android isn’t doing terribly, either. Samsung and Amazon, two of the leading Android-powered tablet vendors, accounted for 18.4% and 9% of worldwide shipments during the third quarter, respectively (for the sake of comparison, Samsung’s market share in Q3 2011 was 6.5%). In addition to this, while the iPad Mini should help Apple boost its market share, its $329 starting price “leaves plenty of room for Android vendors to build upon the success they achieved in the third quarter,” said Mainelli.
New data from ABI Research finds that the iPhone’s share of quarterly global smartphone app downloads stood at 29% in the second quarter of 2012, very much below the 47% market share of Android smartphones. “The iPhone’s download share trends see a lot of seasonal fluctuation, but over the past year or so it has stayed surprisingly resiliently between 30% and 37% of the total,” says ABI Senior Analyst Aapo Markkanen. So why the dip below the 30% mark? ABI attributes it in part to Apple’s “clampdown” on download bots earlier this year. ABI cites data from app marketing firm Fiksu, which earlier this year found that the “bot squeeze” might have eliminated as much as one-fourth of daily download volumes from the top end of the App Store chart. Never to fear though, Markkanen also notes that ABI expects the iPhone’s app download numbers to spike due to the introduction of the iPhone 5.

Today in it’s good to be Apple: The company reports that it sold 3 million Wi-Fi only versions of the iPad Mini and fourth-generation iPad in the first three days since the launch of both devices. This doubles the sales speed of the Wi-Fi only version of the third-generation iPad, which came out this past March. Apple says the Wi-Fi and Cellular versions of both the iPad Mini and the fourth generation iPad will be ready to ship in the US in a few weeks, followed by launches in other countries later this year.
