Cynopsis

11/06/07

Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, November 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Syndicated Network Television Association (SNTA) issued its own statement regarding the writers’ ‘strike – “Syndicated programming will not be disrupted by the TV writers’ strike … first-run shows will continue to air as originally scheduled.”  Despite that statement, Ellen DeGeneres wasn’t at work yesterday, rather she was out in support of her writing staff.  A previously produced show ran yesterday, and another will run today.  Tomorrow? That’s unclear.

As for the late night slate – CBS and NBC announced its latenight shows will be in repeats effective immediately.  Dueling statements from both sides of the fence:

WGAW – Patric Verrone:

“Based on what I saw and heard on the picket lines today … all bets are off and what we achieve in this negotiation will be a function of how much we are willing to fight to get our fair share of the residuals of the future, no matter how they are delivered.”
AMPTP – Nick Counter:
“From our standpoint, we made every good faith effort to negotiate a deal, and they went on strike. At some point, conversations will take place. But not now.”

Tonight’s Premieres:
Bravo: The Real Housewives of Orange County at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
ABC Family: Lincoln Heights at 8p
BET: Exalted! at 9p
ESPN: The Contender at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Richard Parsons, Chairman/CEO at Time Warner will retire as CEO of the company effective January 1, more than half a year before his contract expires in May 2008. He will continue as Chairman at least until the company’s next annual shareholders meeting in May. Stepping into his vacated CEO position on January 1st will be Jeff Bewkes current President/COO.

Radio and television personalities Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase, celebrating 25 years in the entertainment business, are back on television as a new weekly Crook & Chase Show begins airing on RFD-TV January 17 at 9p. The hi-def talk/variety show will air six times each week, 3 on RFD-TV and 3 more on RFD HD. The show is produced by Jim Owens Entertainment and taped in front of a “live” studio audience on Wednesdays at Opry House, Studio A in Nashville. In addition to the Thursday 9p airings, the show will air Fridays at 11a and Saturdays at 7p. The RFD HD airing times are TBD.

Turner has been getting into the Tyler Perry business.  TBS and TNT have picked up the joint cable rights to Lionsgate’s film Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married?, in a package that also includes Daddy’s Little Girls, Pride and Delta Farce. Total package cost – approx $12 million, reports Variety. Previously, TBS/TNT bought the rights to Tyler Perry’s other films Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Madea’s Family Reunion, and TBS currently airs the comedy House of Payne created by Tyler Perry. After the 4-film package has its pay TV debut on Showtime, Why Did I Get Married? goes to TBS in March 2010 and Daddy’s Little Girls in July 2009. The deal also provides leeway for Lionsgate to sell the Perry titles to another cable network. Reportedly conversations with BET are ongoing.  BET previously picked up Diary of a Mad Black Woman.

ABC announced the premiere of Cashmere Mafia, originally set for November 27 at 10p and then sliding in at 9p on Tuesdays, is now TBA. This marks the first show the broadcast networks have back-burnered in the event scripted shows are needed later on this season.  Filling the time period on Tuesdays for now will be OTO specials.

Logo is launching its first 30-minute news program produced by a major network news operation. Exec produced by Court Passant, CBS News on Logo will air on Mondays at 7p starting November 12, as well as stream at www.365gay.com. Jason Bellini will host the show with reporters Itay Hod, Chagmion Antoine, and others. Since Logo’s 2005 launch, CBS News on Logo has been produced as 3-minute interstitials from CBS News that aired throughout the day on Logo and at www.365gay.com.

ABC News and Disney-ABC International Television have signed on with Swiss-American IPTV start-up Zattoo to distribute the ABC News Now channel in Germany, Spain and Belgium. Plans are in the works for other rollouts over the next six months, including in the U.K. The 24-hour news and information network is currently available to nearly 34 million users across cable, broadband and mobile.

Starting next Monday, ION Media Networks’ digital network ION Life will expand its health and wellness programming with new 24/7 content slotted in lifestyle categories. ION Life’s new programming will focus on fitness, diet and nutrition, travel and adventure, design and decor, sports and other shows that equate personal growth and advancement. Some of the new titles include Food Wise, Living Better with Steve Spitz and Taste! The Beverage Show.

Tennis Channel and Sony Pictures Television (SPT) have an exclusive advertising sales agreement effective immediately where SPT will sell Tennis Channel linear and satellite  commercial and direct response inventory to traditional national advertisers. The current Tennis Channel internal sales force will continue to develop non-traditional opportunities including integrated business development-based sponsorships.

Telemundo will offer full-length programming on Yahoo! Telemundo, making its primetime shows and novelas available online the morning after the original air date before 9a.  The new video features include Telemundo’s full-length novelas and footage of its original productions and stars.

It’s that time of year again — or that time every few years again — when Cynopsis conducts a quick 5-question survey to find out what you think about and use this daily, how you’d like to see it improved.  Honestly, this will take less than 30 seconds, it’s completely anonymous. and we’d really appreciate your input.  Click here to participate and thank you!

Cynopsis Weekender College Edition returns on November 15th!  Deadline for college student written essays on the topic of television is November 9th and they should be sent to me at
, subject Weekender College Edition.  Top 4 essays are published in Weekender on Nov 15th, and authors are paid $350 each.  Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.

And here’s something else — all students submitting essays can also submit (free!) their Situation Wanted ad which will run in all editions for one week beginning Nov 15, and the first ten Video Resumes submitted will run on the www.cynopsis.com Video Resume page.  Check with Trish Pihonak at Cynopsis for added info.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Radar Entertainment, the company that launched Jury Duty this fall, has 11 original first-run projects in development for next fall. The programs are available for all dayparts (weekday and weekend) and will be sold on a barter basis. Highlights of each include:
  • A Pound of Paula – Paula Poundstone and her celebrity guests express their opinions on everyday life.
  • Forever Hold Your Peace – host Mark DeCarlo offers his unique advice on starting or breaking up relationships.
  • Motivate & Enlighten with Johnny Wimbrey – author and motivational speaker shows viewers how to overcome adversity and find the positive in life.
  • In Your Face with Bo Dietl – talk show dealing with real issues hosted by detective, security expert, author, actor and entrepreneur.
  • Relative Justice – Judge Mark Evans and his wife, Judge Elizabeth Coker preside over this court show.
  • Big Apple Justice  -Judge and author Edwin Torres presides in this court show.
  • Practical Princess – actress and model Catherine Oxenberg empowers her audience.
  • Shrink Rap – Stacy Kaiser hosts and offers life tools for love and happiness.
  • Star Witness – companion show to Jury Duty; this show features legal analyst Rikki Kliemen who sorts out opposing litigants with the help of a celebrity star witness.
  • Teen Talk with India Oxenberg – daily half-hour targeting female teens.
  • Godfrey Live – daily 30m show for late night featuring edgy talk and sketch comedy hosted by comedian Godfrey.
MSNBC is in chats with Rosie O’Donnell for a potential primetime talker. If a deal is struck, one potential placement for Rosie would be at 9p, which would put her head to head against Larry King and Hannity & Colmes.  Currently airing in the time period is Live with Dan Abrams.  Rosie raised a ruckus and viewership during her stint at The View where she took regular pot shots at the White House.  Her potential primetime program on MSNBC would predictably be along the same lines.
