Google unveiled Android, its long-awaited open platform for mobile devices along with the Open Handset Alliance, a partnership between 34 carriers and mobile technology providers that vow to support it. Motorola, Samsung, HTC and LG Electronics will market phones that run on a Google mobile operating system while carriers such as T-Mobile, Sprint Nextel and NTT DoCoMo will allow Google-enabled phones to run on their networks. Mobile phones based on Android are expected to hit the marketplace during the second half of 2008.
Microsoft added a suite of ESPN programming to the Xbox 360 platform and will offer users commercial free NCAA football and basketball games for purchase. Shows available for download include World Series of Poker, The Contender, Summer X Games 13 and Madden Nation at $2 a pop for standard def and $3 each for high def. NCAA games will go for $3/$4.50 for standard def and high def respectively, available 48 hours after they conclude. ESPN said it is also looking for ways to incorporate the Xbox Live online gaming community into its telecasts.
Telemundo will offer full-length programming on Yahoo! Telemundo for the first time, making its primetime shows and novelas available online the morning after the original airdate before 9 am ET. The new video features include Telemundo’s full-length novelas and footage of its original productions and stars.
NPR launched a new online music site featuring concerts, studio performances, news and interviews from affiliates around the country including WBGO, WFUV and WNYC in New York.
WSJ.com, one of the few websites that still charges for its content, announced it reached 1 million subscribers. Online subscriptions grew by 25.5% during the third quarter to 989,000.
Oxygen‘s VOD service hit a milestone with 25 million subscribers.

IAC/Interactive Corp. is splitting into 5 separate publicly-traded companies to better keep up with changes in the digital media landscape. The new businesses will be:
- IAC, including Ask.com, Bloglines, CitySearch, Evite, Excite, iWon, Match.com, CollegeHumor.com, GarageGames, and investments in Brightcove and other firms
- HSN, including HSN TV, hsn.com and the Cornerstone Brands portfolio of catalogs
- Ticketmaster, including domestic and international operations
- Interval International, including CondoDirect, Quest Hawaii and VacationSource.com
- LendingTree, including RealEstate.com, Domania, GetSmart Home Loans and iNest
Atlantic Broadband entered into a new long-term agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide. The MSO will carry TV Guide Network and TVG, deploy Gemstar-TV Guide’s i-Guide IPG, launch TV Guide’s Spot On Demand service and add TV Guide’s online Listings2Go service to its company website atlanticbb.com.
Twentieth Century Fox film and TV studios lifted its ban on using music controlled by Universal Music Group in its movies and TV shows, reports the Wall Street Journal. The ban was put in place after Universal Music sued MySpace in Nov. of 2006, accusing the site of encouraging piracy. (The lawsuit remains unsettled). The article suggests the ban was more harmful to Fox producers than to Universal Music, handcuffing their ability to choose suitable songs.
Not to be outdone, Facebook is announcing a new ad platform today codenamed Pandemic, according to VentureBeat. It replaces the site’s sponsored group section with pages advertisers can use to upload interactive game, music or entertainment widgets created by Facebook. Another component, codenamed Project Beacon, will reportedly work with third party clients to let the Facebook know when their users are making a purchase.
Separately, MySpace completed the first phase of “HyperTargeting by MySpace,” a new platform announced in July allowing advertisers to buy ads by targeting specific interest segments. The site is expanding the number of categories advertisers can target from 10 to more than 100, with a total of more than 1,000 subcategories among them.

Tucker Snedeker was named to the newly created post of Executive Director, Mobile Entertainment Group at Gemstar-TV Guide. Tucker will help drive TV Guide Mobile’s growth initiatives and help manage key partnerships, reporting to Bob Shallow, VP/GM of TV Guide Mobile and Tonia O’Connor, EVP/Distribution in New York.
Video compression specialist DivX appointed Kevin Hell as its new permanent CEO, a post he has been occupying on an acting basis since July 2007.
TV Guide.com is devoting extensive coverage to the WGA Strike including breaking news reports, interviews from the picket lines and a Strike Watch blog inviting fans to chime in on how the strike is affecting their TV lives. The LA Times is also doing an excellent job on its Show Tracker blog and extensive grid of where shows currently stand. The question on everyone’s mind in the digital space, of course, is whether or not frustrated viewers will turn to the web to get their entertainment fix.
