Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 5, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, questions/answers about interviews.

What are some of the things you look for when interviewing people?
That they have a strong personal brand: what makes them unique? How do they add value to the team and organization? How do they approach problem-solving and consensus-building across organizations?

How passionate are they about the business and their respective area of focus?

What are some of the qualities you look for when interviewing candidates?
An interview is almost like a date. You’re going to spend more time with a new employee than your spouse. So it’s important to know what drives the person. I don’t like to rush interviews. I prepare for them: I’d never read their resume 5 minutes before they walk in the door. During the interview, I try to make people comfortable. It shouldn’t be a one-sided conversation. I want to learn what motivates them; what their taste and style are. I ask questions like, “What are you watching on TV right now? What do you read? What’s interesting about social media today? Why did you get into cable TV?” Then it’s easier to morph the conversation into talking about IFC.

Nothing bothers me more than people who don’t do their homework before an interview. Know what’s going on and understand why.

What are some of the things you look for when interviewing people?
I look for diversity, logic, and the thought process that went into their roles and companies they’ve chosen to work for. Their career choices provide an understanding of what motivates them, and what their short and long term ambitions and goals are.

I also want to find out what they are passionate about and how that relates to the role.

What interview questions do you like to ask?
I want to hear about which achievements they’re most proud of thus far. That tells me a lot. I also ask them to tell me about the best boss they’ve had and what made them a great supervisor. And I ask them what about this job and company interested them.

~EXECUTIVE MOVES~

Lisa Hackner has been tapped to serve as Executive Vice President of Daytime and Syndicated Programming at ABC Entertainment Group. Hackner had been Vice President of Creative Affairs at Telepictures.

Randy Freer has been promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer of Fox Networks Group. Freer had been Co-President and Chief Operating Officer of the Fox Sports Media Group.

TLC announced Sandy Varo Jarrell will start as the company’s Senior Vice President of Production and Development, West Coast, effective November 12. Varo Jarrell had been Head of Unscripted Programming at ABC Family.

Outdoor Channel added four execs to its ranks: Steve Smith has been tapped to serve as Executive Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing; Bill Osborn as Senior Vice President of Marketing; Scott Long as Vice President of Finance, Media, and James Alexander as Vice President of Consumer Rights and Analytics. Smith was COO of MAVTV, Osborn worked as SVP at AXS TV, Long was VP of Finance for KSE and Alexander served as Director of Campaign Insights for Microsoft.

Caroline Torrance will join Zodiak Rights as its Head of International Scripted. Previously, Torrance was Director of Scripted, Content and Production for BBC Worldwide.

Allison Gollust has been named Chief Marketing Officer at CNN. She was hired as SVP of Communications in March.

Lee Raftery has been upped to Executive Vice President of Marketing and Communications at NBCUniversal International. Raftery had been EVP, Marketing.

NUVOtv announced that Sylvia Hart has joined the network as Vice President/Creative Director of On-Air Promotion. Hart had been VP, On-Air Promotion at NBCUniversal.

WE tv appointed Cheryl Bloch as its first Senior Vice President of Scripted Programming. Bloch had been a senior consultant for the network.

Arts net Ovation has named Randy Rovegno Vice President, Content Distribution Marketing. Rovegno had been at Longboard Marketing, an agency he founded.

Women in Animation, a professional organization for women in the animation industry, has re-launched, electing Margaret Dean (Director of Production, Playground Productions) and Kristy Scanlan (VP of Business Development, Animation & Games, Technicolor) as co-presidents.

JV Productions has named Riley Robbins its Vice President, U.S. Development. Robbins had previously been VP of Development for Krasnow Productions.

Viacom International Media Networks has promoted Jill Offman to Senior Vice President, Comedy. Offman will oversee the positioning of Comedy Central and its associated brands outside the U.S.

TVGN appointed Nicole Sabatini as Senior Vice President of Marketing, and Beecher Scarlett as Vice President of Ad Sales. Sabatini had been SVP, Marketing for Style Network; Beecher was a senior sales exec for NBCUniversal.
