NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Netflix‘s acquisition of original documentary The Square could be its ticket to the Oscars. The film documenting the Egyptian protests took the top spot at Toronto’s International Film Festival for Documentary People’s Choice Award, along with accolades at Sundance Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. It will stream exclusively on Netflix in early 2014.

Gaming net Machinima‘s YouTube channel may have over nine million subscribers, but it’s thinking even bigger with a partnership with streaming service Twitch, which focuses on live events. The new channel on Twitch started yesterday, kicking off with a Call of Duty: Ghosts marathon. Twitch signed a deal with Xbox and Playstation that makes it easy for gamers to livecast their sessions.

World Wrestling Entertainment is pairing with Entourage writers and The Simpsons animators to create a WWE web series called Camp WWE. The series will include 13 three-minute episodes that will be made available on all WWE’s digital platforms.

CONTENT MEDIA

Twitter raised its IPO price range to $23-25, indicating red-hot demand for the social network stock, and plans to close the books on an IPO today, a day earlier than scheduled. Shares would start trading Thursday.
In other words: Investors are betting that a company that lost $133.9 million in the first nine months of 2013 is worth $13.6 billion. But with its young, large and influential user base, the social media darling could be poised to take flight.

Amazon Studios announced that its first two original series, Alpha House and Betas, will premiere this month. The first three episodes of Alpha House will be available for free on Nov. 15, and Betas on Nov. 22. The strategy: entice viewers with freebies, Amazon Studios director Roy Price told Variety, “then we will release new episodes via Prime Instant Video week by week so that customers can chat about the shows and build anticipation.”

Hulu is bringing back Quick Draw for a second ten-episode season in 2014. In its first season, the comedy western consistently landed among Hulu’s top ten most popular shows.

Activision is at it again with the latest installment of Call of Duty: Ghosts. Known for flashy live-action commercials that incorporate surprise celebrity cameos, the company unveiled a trailer for the game (hitting shelves today) that features Megan Fox, plays on The Hangover theme, and teases an outer space component, all with Frank Sinatra crooning in the background.
