Apple is floating a scheme to TV networks to launch a monthly “over the top” TV programming subscription service that would deliver unlimited access to TV shows to any device that can interface with its iTunes software, reports AllThingsD. Such a move would tap into a huge underserved part of the market for Apple – those who are uncomfortable with the value proposition of buying (or renting) shows a la carte you end up watching once. It would also likely prove to be a huge boost to the Apple TV set top, which has so far failed to generate much interest from iTunes installed base of 65 million users. Sources say that Disney, whose largest individual shareholder is Steve Jobs, may be the first studio to endorse such a model. Disney was also the first TV studio to agree to sell shows via iTunes.
Children’s entertainment producer Cookie Jar Entertainment is introducing a new ad supported premium video content destination for kids. Jaroo.com launches in pubic beta in the U.S. and Canada this morning with about 500 full-length episodes from more than 50 of its popular shows including Inspector Gadget, The Adventures of Paddington Bear, Johnny Test, Super Mario Bros. and Zelda. Cookie Jar’s digital team decided to keep the portal focused on video, so don’t look for social networking, games or other interactive features. But new shows and episodes will be added daily, with the online schedule spelling out the rotation and over 2,000 episodes planned for the site over the next 3 months. Cookie Jar is currently in talks with other kids programmers about licensing additional titles, according to Frederic Soulie, VP/Digital Media.
Meredith Corp. announced a relaunch of its 12 local broadcast station websites with longtime vendor partner Internet Broadcasting. New versions of sites such as CBSAtlanta.com and Fox5vegas.com include less clutter and feature enhanced video players and more social networking features including integrations with Facebook and Twitter. Plans are also underway to launch new iPhone apps for the station sites.
Gospel Music Channel announced it will launch an HD simulcast feed on Friday, Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. GMC celebrated its 5th birthday last week and is currently in 45 million homes.
Microblogging service Twitter introduced a new Lists feature to its entire user base that allows users to compile and curate lists of Twitter users that others can begin following with a single click. A lists API is also being made available to third party developers. Desktop Twitter client Seesmic says it has already integrated userlists into its sidebar, allowing you to see lists that you follow.
A new site called On Demand Weekly has launched as an online consumer guide to what’s on in your local Comcast or Time Warner VOD system. “This Week’s Best” is a look at programming and the hidden gems. “The Vodder Blog” focuses on VOD industry news and promotions.

Online advertising start-up OpenX and Microsoft announced a partnership allowing both companies to cross-market and promote to each others customer bases. Under the terms of the deal, OpenX, which competes with Microsoft’s own aQuantive suite, will offer some of Microsoft’s ad products to its network of 150,000 sites and it turn gain referrals from Redmond. For instance, OpenX will promote Microsoft’s Content Ads monetization products by integrating them across its ad network and building a plug-in to OpenX Ad Server so existing publisher customers can more easily sign up for Content Ads and implement it on their Web sites. OpenX is the first reseller approved by Microsoft to build a plug-in for Content Ads.
Trenderr creators Wiredset is launching a campaign for perfume house COTY and Calvin Klein leveraging Google Maps and Twitter to riff off the product ethos of “live free”. An interactive Google Maps mash-up call for users to submit their own locations, using input from CKFree model Jamie Dornan to get the ball rolling. An inspirational Twitter channel dubbed CKFree Thinkers compiles quotes from famous “free thinkers” including Jack Kerouac, John Lennon and JFK.
Break Media launches a new campaign with Southern Comfort today built around a series of webisodes that showcase how the spirit is perfect for any party. Presented as a mock Weekend Update-style newscast, Social Sortz Net covers recaps of a series of themed parties including Halloween, Xmas, New Years Eve, the Superbowl and Mardi Gras.
Reports are circulating that Comcast is moving closer to gaining control of NBC Universal and that a deal may be announced as early as this week. Vivendi, however, continues to maintain that it will not tip its hand before its annual window opens to sell its stake on Nov. 15. A deal would still be subject to regulatory approval and would likely take over a year to complete.
Nielsen has struck a new pact with consumer data firm DataLogix to combine demographic and lifestyle targeting data with the latter’s online ad targeting platform. Nielsen’s audience cluster “PRIZM” data will help advertisers track lifestyle and product purchases among 66 different demographic groups including “Blue Blook Estates,” “Young Digerati” and “Country Squires.” The data will be made available to DataLogix’s ad network and publishing clients including Adconion, Audience Science, BrightRoll, Collective Media, Time and United Online.
ComScore is teaming with pharmaceutical research company ImpactRx to introduce a new digital measurement solution that connects physicians’ online and mobile behaviors to their actual prescription writing activities. The service will gain insights into how physicians use the internet, including what sites they frequent, their level of online engagement and search engine usage, as well as how these behaviors influence their prescription writing activity.
Motorola‘s Android-powered CLIQ smartphone hit stores yesterday for $200 with a two-year T-Mobile contract, a phone which takes the Facebook wall or Twitter tweet schematic and uses it to create an interface for users’ social life. Its catch phrase should be, “You don’t need an app for that.” The homescreen can be customized to aggregate always-on multiple social networking services as well as broadband and location-based widgets. The “Happenings” widget aggregates your friends’ status updates from Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.
This one’s pricey but scores points on the cuteness scale. The Litl Webbook (available at litl.com later today) is a thin profile, WiFi capable PC that can be propped on a countertop like an easel for viewing recipes, photos, news videos or your Facebook page. It also connects to a television via an HDMI cable for viewing linear video channels. The gadget retails for $699, quite a bit more than your average netbook.
Haynes – publisher of the ubiquitous Haynes Owners Workshop Manuals for cars and motorcycles – has released the first Haynes iPhone App under a licensing agreement with Gourmet Pixel. The “Haynes Car Tips” App includes general maintenance information, video tutorials and a personalized “My Garage” section that helps schedule reminders for insurance renewals, service records and driving logs.
Dexterize.com is Showtime‘s latest Facebook app, allowing users to launch a bloody takeover of the homepages of up to 15 of their friends. (It’s not for the faint of heart – blood oozed down across the screen before a personal message appears.)
The BBC has appointed Palm Europe’s Senior Marketing Director Simon Lloyd as its new Director of Marketing, Communications & Audiences for its Future Media & Technology division, responsible for exploring news ways of delivering BBC services.
NTT America hired Doug Junkins as the company’s New York-based Chief Technology Officer. Doug will continue to serve as VP of IP Development for NTT’s Global IP Network business unit, overseeing network architecture, tool development and peering relations. He will succeed Kazuhiro Gomi as CTO, who was named COO of NTT America in June 2009.
The BBC launched its answer to CSPAN. Democracy Live is a new on demand video portal aggregating video coverage from the UK’s national political bodies, covering all proceedings in the main chambers of the House of Commons, House of Lords, Scottish Parliament, Northern Ireland Assembly, Welsh Assembly and full sittings of the European Parliament. Each feed appears in a wall of live and archived feeds, providing a cornucopia for UK political junkies and removing a huge barrier of access for the common citizen. A contextual search engine powered by Blinkx and Autonomy employs “speech-to-text” technology to search for topics and personalities, making it possible to research larger issues. The site also includes handy video tours of each political body and also aggregates topics and issues by category.
