Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Soul Surfer will be the first feature film under a new deal between FilmDistrict and Sony Pictures, and will be released via TriStar Pictures on April 15, 2011.  The movie is based on the true story of competitive teen surfer Bethany Hamilton and her memoir Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family and Fighting to Get Back on the Board, which tells how she lost her arm in a shark attack and her determination and faith she says gave her the strength to return to the top of her sport.  FilmDistrict will manage the marketing campaign for the movie.  Soul Surfer stars Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, AnnaSophia Robb, and Carrie Underwood in her debut.  The cast also includes Lorraine Nicholson, Kevin Sorbo and Jeremy Sumpter.  The movie was independently financed by Enticing Entertainment and Island Film Group, and is a production of Mandalay Vision, Brookwell McNamara Entertainment and Life’s A Beach Entertainment.  The Affirm Films division of Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired North American and substantial International rights to the movie prior to the commencement of production.  Soul Surfer is directed by Sean McNamara from a screenplay by McNamara, Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Deborah Bonann Schwartz, with additional writing by Ron Bass, Jen Smolka and Kara Holden.


DQ Entertainment (DQE) inks equity and distribution co-production deals for The Jungle Book, the 3D animated TV series, and The New Adventures of Peter Pan the new 3D stereoscopic TV series, with Indonesian broadcaster PT Metropolitan Televisindo (B-Channel).  According to the terms of the deals, B-Channel will contribute towards the global budgets of both The Jungle Book (about US$13 million) and The New Adventures of Peter Pan (about US$14 million).  B-Channel is granted the broadcast rights for free TV, free VOD, IPTV and home video distribution across Indonesia.  Additionally, it will be entitled to a royalty against DQE’s distribution revenues.

Starz Animation Toronto (9, Gnomeo & Juliet) is partnering with producers Avi Arad and Steven Paul’s Crystal Sky Pictures to breathe life into the VFX robot star of the family-targeted feature Robosapien: Rebooted, which is set for release in 2011.   Based on the mini-robot toy, Robosapien, created by WowWee, the mixed VFX and live-action movie stars Bobby Coleman (The Last Song, Surface), Penelope Ann Miller (Carlito’s Way, Men of a Certain Age) and David Eigenberg (Sex and the City).  The story revolves around a robot boy and a human boy (Coleman), who come together to go up against the evil organization that funded the robot’s creators, and to free the human boy’s parents.  WowWee will handle Licensing and Merchandising opportunities for Robosapien: Rebooted.


Babar and the Adventures of Badou, the new CGI animated series featuring the voice of Gordon Pinsent, will premiere on YTV‘s (Canada) Playtime programming block on Monday, November 22 at 11a.  Produced by Nelvana Studios and TeamTO, in association with The Clifford Ross Company, the new series is based on the classic Babar books.  Beginning Wednesday, November 10, viewers can go to YTV.com ( www.ytv.com ) and take part in Badou’s adventures online with ten customizable web games, nine exclusive online animations, visits to four neighbourhoods in Celesteville, and screen clips of the series. The site also feature coloring pages, printable stickers, and kids can download a customized storybook.  Additionally, the series will be featured on YTV’s Babar and the Adventures of Badou float in Toronto’s 106the annual Santa Claus Parade on Sunday, November 21 at 12:30p.  YTV will air a repeat broadcast of the Parade on December 5 at 12p.  TFI (France) will premiere Babar and the Adventures of Badou on Monday, November 8.

ABC will air two Charles M. Schulz Peanuts Thanksgiving holiday specials, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and This Is America, Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers, on Thursday, November 18 at 8-9p. The holiday specials will also air again on Thanksgiving Day at 8p.

The Harry Potter movies are available to Comcast customers via Xfinity TV – On Demand and online ( www.xfinitytv.com ) beginning this week.  Comcast will also provide six exclusive sneak peeks at previously unseen footage of the new movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 to Xfinity TV-On Demand and online, as well as giving access to 75+ special features (e.g. interviews, behind-the-scenes features, trailers) of the previous movies.  Comcast customers can access the first five Harry Potter movies now through November 10 ($9.75 … or “nine and three-quarters” – ring a bell?).  The movies will also be available for rent individually On Demand and online through December 13.  Additionally, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is available On Demand and online to Comcast HBO subs through November 29.  The six Deathly Hallows – Part 1 exclusive featurettes will be available through Xfinity TV On Demand and Online as follows:

  • November 1 – featurettes examines Harry, Ron and Hermione’s new journey, as well as learning why the Horcruxes as essential to Voldemort.
  • November 8 – what are the Deathly Hallows? And why are they significant? Also a clip looks at The Ministry of Magic and changes that will be revealed in the new movie.
  • November 15 – fans will get to meet the new characters introduced in Deathly Hallows – and will also get to go inside Malfoy Manor and learn things have changed for the family of Death Eaters.


The Hub and WowWee, a toy and entertainment company, enter into a sponsorship deal for the launch of the TV network’s new weekly magazine series, Hubworld, which launches this Friday, November 5 at 6:30p.  WowWee will serve as a key sponsor for the new kid-targeted half-hour series.  The sponsorship features a co-branded “prepare to Rock Sweepstakes” TV spot that feature WowWee’s Paper Jamz guitar and also drives viewers to Hubworld.  During the premiere episode, viewers eight and older will have the opportunity to win on of 100 Paper Jamz Instant Rockstar Guitars by calling a toll0free phone number.  The concept and supporting creative for the promotion was created by The Hub’s Integrated Marketing Solutions group in partnership with Beacon Media Group.

DreamWorks Animation unveils a range of marketing, promotional and licensing to support the release of its new animated movie, Megamind, which releases this Friday, November 2010.  Chase Freedom introduces its first ever movie-themed effort that meshes the blue of its corporate logo and the creative elements of Megamind, as well as ticket give-a-ways for card members.  Other promotional partners launching programs include: McDonald’s global Happy Meal programs and TV, online, and in-store support; Airheads candy with movie themed packs and special Megamind flavors, Mega Cherry and Minion-ade, and TV support; publishing partners Penguin Books (storybooks), Dalmatian Press (color/activity books), Ape Entertainment (comic books and graphic novels), and iStoryTime (digital book app); technology partners  the movie was featured at Intel‘s ComicCon booth and HP is offering Megamind printables online and in products at retail; family vacations via Starwood Hotels & Resorts; THQ is releasing a range of video games based on the movie for various gaming systems, as well as mobile game apps; and master toy licensee Toy Quest has created a line of Megamind toys including figures and vehicles available at Toys “R” Us.

For the Trekkie who thought they had everything … Haynes, a workshop manual publisher, has published the first full-color technical manual for Star Trek’s the U.S.S. Enterprise, titled The U.S.S. Enterprise Owners’ Workshop Manual.  The manual covers seven different incarnations of the iconic starship (by the way that covers from 2151 onwards – NX-01, NCC-1701, NCC-1701A through NCC-1701-E), including 80+ never-before-seen cutaways, CGI renders, photos and diagrams that detail the different Enterprises and related technologies (e.g. transporters, warp speed travel).  Written by Ben Robinson and Marcus Riley, with technical consultant Michael Okuda, who toiled for 20 years on the Star Trek TV series and movies, the book is authorized by CBS Consumer Products.  The book was made possible by a licensing deal with Star Trek owners CBS Consumer Products in the US and office Star Trek publisher Simon & Shuster.


Sesame Workshop promotes three in its Worldwide Distribution group.

  • Scott Chambers is upped to SVP/Worldwide Media Distribution.  Chambers will oversee the digital, traditional, and mobile media business worldwide, including publishing, interactive, TV, home video and audio.  He will report to Terry Fitzpatrick, EVP/Distribution.  Chambers, who joined the company in 2002, was previously with Disney Publishing and FAO Schwarz.
  • Mike Khouri is promoted to VP/Home Video and Audio Distribution.  Khouri is now responsible for home video and audio businesses domestic and international, and will report to Chambers.  Prior to joining Sesame Workshop four years ago, Khouri toiled in retail sales and marketing for Universal Music and Video Distribution.
  • Jennifer Perry to upped to VP/Publishing.  Perry now heads up the publishing business at the Workshop, domestic and international, including the Sesame workshop Publishing Archive.  She will report to Chambers.  Perry joined the company in 2005, and prior to that was Associate Editorial Director at Scholastic.


PBSKids.org ( www.pbskids.org ) becomes the top kid-targeted website for free videos streamed based on number of videos viewed, per comScore Video Metrix (September 2010).  For the month of September 2010, kids spent an average of 47 minutes viewing free educational videos, reaching close to 88 million video streams for the month, which is twice the monthly average for free educational videos from other kid-centric sites.
