Close to 200,000 fewer subscribers will sign up for Pay-TV services in 2012, according to a forecast from Credit Suisse analysts. In the report, the analysts attributed the drop to the weak formation of new households and households opting for less-expensive alternatives in the face of a weak economy. “Cord-avoiders,” or viewers who select such cost-effective alternatives as Hulu and Netflix and who may not return to cable and satellite services when the economy improves, are cited as the immediate problem facing the industry. However, the report also takes care to note that the real problem could manifest in the form of “cord-nevers”; or younger generations who might grow up “in an internet-based video culture in which the mantra of ‘why pay for TV?’ and ‘pay TV is a rip-off,’ develop. As they age, some of these consumers will choose pay-TV substitutes to satisfy their video needs,” said the report.

Hulu is in talks to launch in Germany, according to a report from German media news website Horizont.net. Hulu SVP Johannes Larcher and consultant Olaf Kroll are in discussions with German TV networks to sign content deals for the video service. However, the site also reports that Hulu has been having difficulty acquiring the necessary rights for a full launch, which would make the eventual German offering different from the model that is available in the US.
Platform ‘n’ is a pay-TV satellite service for viewers in Poland. This week it has launched nVOD NET, a new OTT service that seeks to give subscribers access to thousands of additional movies, TV shows, documentaries and other programming. The service has launch partners in HBO and TVN, which means that HBO On Demand and TVN Player, TVN’s catch-up TV service, will also be initially available through nVOD NET. Access to the new offering will be free for a promotional period that lasts until February 29, 2012; after that, customers will be able to choose between a variety of free and paid options.
OpenSky.com, a website that connects its members to lifestyle and product recommendations from top celebrities and experts, has inked a deal with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. As a result, Martha Stewart will be providing daily recommendations on high-quality products in entertainment, home design and food at OpenSky.com. She will join Bobby Flay, Padma Lakshmi, Mariel Hemingway, Molly Sims and over 80 others who have already signed on as OpenSky.com’s network of experts.
Web video company Maker Studios has announced the launch of a global online bilingual network Tutele and Tutele Dos. The network will feature original web programming focused towards Spanish-speaking, English-speaking and bilingual Latinos in the US, Mexico, South America and Spain. Overall, Tutele will offer 12 different online channels and two hub channels, while Tuteles Dos will provide additional content such as behind-the-scenes features, interviews with network talent and guest stars and more.
Premier Retail Networks (PRN) has renewed and will expand its content deal with the Sam the Cooking Guy original series that airs in PRN’s in-store media networks in retail outlets. The cooking series, which is hosted by 14-time Emmy winner Sam Zien, is comprised of 30 to 60 second videos and airs on PRN’s Checkout TVO Network and HDTV Network.
The 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards will stream live from Singapore on Facebook this morning beginning at 5 am ET. Available via the network’s Facebook page, the awards show will feature performances from Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and members of the Black Eyed Peas. The award show is also scheduled to air on the network on Sunday, December 18 at 8 pm ET.
Social TV recommendation technology company BeeTV is closing its doors, reports TechCrunch. The Italian start-up had raised $10 million total during its run even though it was forced to shift its strategy from offering a TV recommendation service, which failed to generate interest with telcos and cable operators, to consumer-oriented products such as an iPad app that let users watch and share TV choices with their friends. The start-up says it has run out of cash and will post its assets up for sale, including the patented recommendation engine for TV and the social TV app that has been available for iOS and the web.
Red Arrow Entertainment Group’s Scandinavian production house Snowman Productions has purchased a majority stake in Hard Hat, a web-based production company out of Stockholm. The deal will enable Snowman Productions to expand its operations into web TV and advertiser-funded programming. Hard Hat’s current clientele includes SVT, Kanal 5, Procter & Gamble and Bauhaus.
The latest comScore Video Metrix data shows that 184 million US internet users watched online video content in October, averaging out at 21.1 hours per viewer. In addition, a new monthly record was set as the total US web audience watched 42.6 billion videos. Leading the way, as usual, was Google as it collected 161 million unique viewers and reached a record high of 20.9 billion videos watched, as well as achieving the highest viewer engagement metrics with 7.1 hours per viewer. Facebook pulled in second with 59.8 million viewers, followed by VEVO (57 million), Microsoft properties (49.1 million) and Viacom Digital (48.2 million) to round out the top five. Other interesting data includes:
- Hulu, Tremor Video and BrightRoll were the top three online video ad properties when ranked in terms of video ads viewed.
- 86.2% of the US internet audience watched an online video in October 2011.
- Video ads accounted for 14.9% of all videos watched and 1.4% of all minutes spent watching videos on the web.
Spongebob Squarepants topped SocialGuide‘s social TV ratings chart last week. BET’s 2011 Soul Train Awards was the most talked about primetime program on social networks and CBS was the most social TV network of the week, followed by FOX, ABC, NBC and BET.
Online sales on Black Friday grew 24.3% over last year, according to findings from IBM data arm Coremetrics. In addition, orders made via mobile devices accounted for 9.8% of all online sales, jumping up from 3.2% in 2010. Delving further into mobile, the data also showed that the iPhone and iPad were home to more than 10% of overall online retail traffic; and that shoppers using iPads had the highest customer conversion rate at 4.6%, versus 2.8% for all mobile devices.
Mobile game developer Halfbrick has brought the Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots to Android users. The game is now available on Android devices exclusively through the Amazon App Store and is optimized for Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Priced at $0.99 and based on DreamWorks Animation’s hit animated film, the game is another entry in the popular Fruit Ninja franchise that involves varied puzzle-style slicing games and adventures.
As news trickled out last week in regards to Facebook tapping HTC to develop a Facebook Phone, AllThingsD asked readers if they would want such a phone from the social networking site. 81% of the 1,500 poll respondents indicated they would not want a Facebook Phone, while 8% said they would want one and 12% answered that they would consider it. Codenamed “Buffy,” the phone would be powered by a modified version of Android and would feature deep integration with Facebook and support for HTML5 as an app platform. Since the phone is still over 12 to 18 months away from being introduced to the public, the sentiment can always change.
Resonate Networks has appointed Evan Rullman to be the Senior Director of Midwest Sales. He will be in charge of growing the online ad company’s presence in the region and will seek to introduce agencies and brand marketers to the company’s Insights Driven Media platform, which looks to connect marketers to consumers by using data gathered by asking people about the values that influence their decisions.

Flixlab is an awesome, easy to use iOS app (coming soon to Android) that can quickly help you make movies out of the photos and videos that are on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. It’s pretty cool; you select the photos or videos you want to use; then select the themes and special effects you want going on in your movie or slide show; after that, pick the music you want playing over the movie from either the tracks you have stored on your device or Flixlab’s library; finally, tag your friends and share your creation on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, via Email or text messages. And just in case you want to hold onto the movie for a bit longer, you can also download it to your iOS device. It’s free, so have at it.
