Fans of detective drama series Sherlock headlined by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman may have to wait for season three to premiere on PBS in late 2013 – or even early 2014. Production on the third cycle has been moved from January to March and the reason, according to reports, is due to the stars’ busy schedules. Cumberbatch is set to star in Star Trek 2 while Freeman stars in The Hobbit. In the UK, BBC has not yet announced the premiere date for season three though fans there were hoping for a summer launch. BBC may debut Sherlock in late 2013 and PBS is allowed to air the series after BBC’s window.
A new reality series that reinvents gladiatorial combat in the 21st century makes its way to Syfy when Robot Combat League premieres February 26 at 10p. Hosted by WWE wrestler Chris Jericho, the series will feature tournament-style battles between eight-feet tall, state-of-the-art humanoid robots controlled by human “robo-jockeys.” Robot Combat League is produced by Smart Dog Media.
The current fifth season of drama series Merlin will be its last so says the Shine Group and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME). Merlin launched last month in the UK on BBC One and airs in more than 180 territories worldwide. The fifth season of Merlin, depicting Camelot at the height of its “golden age” has peaked at 7.1 million viewers airing on Saturday nights. BBC One will air a two-part finale this Christmas. Merlin airs on Syfy in the US. Shine group and FME are also looking at potential new spin-offs of Merlin based on different characters. Merlin was originally created and produced by Shine TV while FME is an investor in the series and holds the exclusive distribution (excluding UK), home entertainment and licensing rights to the series.
Animal Planet debuts a new season of Pit Boss on January 5 at 9p. In the new season, the series continues to follow Shorty Rossi, owner of a Hollywood talent agency for little people and a pit bull rescue center. Pit Boss is produced for Animal Planet by Intuitive Entertainment.

Programming Note: The Weather Channel will air a special, one-hour episode of its franchise Coast Guard that chronicles the rescue of 14 crew members onboard the HMS Bounty during Superstorm Sandy.
