11/27/07

Good Morning.  It’s Tuesday, November 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC gives full season orders to two freshman series – Chuck and Life.  At this point, Chuck is still in production, while Life has shut down due to the writers’ strike.  Chuck has been averaging a 3.4 A18-49 so far this season on Mondays at 8p, and Life has averaged a 3.0/9 on Wednesday nights at 10p.

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC: Dancing with the Stars at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The writers’ strike has been going on since early November, and the late night talk shows all went into reruns by the following Monday.  Now the first late night talker will begin taping new episodes –NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly goes back into production this week, for shows airing next week. All the other late night talkers remain in reruns, and at this point, there’s no indication any of them will resume production.

Telemundo will premiere its late night show, Mas Vale Tarde con Alex Cambert (Better Late with Alex Cambert), on November 29 at 1130p. The show features interviews with top stars in either English or Spanish, musical guests, and cross-cultural comedy, with its house band providing backup.Taped in Los Angeles in front of a live studio audience, the weekly series is broadcast from Telemundo’s brand-new studio at Universal CityWalk.

Corbin Bernsen is hosting his own show on GSN – game show How Much is Enough?, produced by BBC Worldwide America.  The network has ordered up 40 episodes that are scheduled to premiere in primetime on January 8 and airing Tuesday thru Saturday nights.

Production of the primetime Food Network series Emeril Live will shut down on December 11, according to TV Week.  The show will continue in repeats, and Emeril will continue with his daytime series Essence of Emeril.  Additionally, new projects and specials for Emeril are currently on the burner.

Hi-def channel MOJO and Esquire Magazine are partnering to produce on-air interstitials called Take it from Esquire that begin this month. The series of 45-second interstitials will cover topics ranging from style and wardrobe tips to grilling steaks. They will air starting in primetime and later will venture to other platforms including video, online and print.

The so-called 70/70 Rule comes under fire today in an FCC Open Commission Meeting, scheduled to begin this morning at 930am. The rule which dates back to the 1984 Cable Act, provides that once cable is available in 70% of the country, and is subscribed to by at least 70% of its potential users, cable is then subject to more regulation in an effort to promote competition and content diversity.  As you can imagine, a multitude of letters and emails have been sent to FCC Commish Kevin Martin both questioning the authority of the FCC to adopt more rules and regulations for the cable industry, as well as the need for more rules based on the 1984 Cable Act provision.  The proceedings can be viewed live via the internet (for a fee) by going to www.capitolconnection.gmu.edu.

Gaylord Entertainment Co. will buy Westin La Cantera Resort in San Antonio for $252.5 million, financed through the hospitality and entertainment company’s existing credit line. The deal is expected to be complete in first quarter 2008. In addition, Gaylord purchased some 90 odd acres of undeveloped land next to the resort and is planning an approximate three-year, $250 million expansion on the property to be finished by 2011.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Bravo greenlit a one-hour reality pilot starring Jo De La Rosa who appeared in the first two seasons of The Real Housewives of Orange County, the network’s original docu-series. Followers of Housewives remember Jo as the young woman involved with gated community guy Slade, but called it a day to pursue her own career in LA.  Produced by Evolution Film & Tape, Inc., the pilot picks up with Jo in L.A. working on a singing career as she tries to find love. Production on the pilot begins next month.

In its next cycle, CW’s America’s Next Top Model will get a new judge – departing is Twiggy, entering is supermodel Paulina Porizkova.  Cycle 10 is due to premiere in 1st qtr 2008.

Casting Call: HGTV is looking for homeowners to appear on the new series, Red Hot & Green starring Carter Oosterhouse, and who have a desire to “green up” a room in their house. Outgoing, energetic homeowners are encouraged to apply. Note: this will be a single room renovation on a small-scale and the homeowner must have a budget allocated for this project.
