Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 22, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.

Mattel announces CEO Robert A. Eckert will retire from that position, which he has held for eleven years, effective December 31, 2011.  Mattel’s Board of Directors has named Bryan G. Stockton, currently Mattel’s COO, to take over as CEO as of January 1, 2012.  Eckert will continue in his role as Chairman of the Board, and the Board has elected Stockton as a member of the Board, also effective January 1, 2012.  Eckert joined Mattel in May 2000 as a Chairman and CEO from Kraft Foods.  Stockton has served as COO for the last year, responsible for Mattel’s business units including Mattel Brands, Fisher-Price, American Girl, and the North American and International divisions, as well as the Operations and Corporate Responsibilities.  Stockton also joined Mattel in 2000 as EVP/Business Planning and Development.  He was given responsibility for International in 2003, and was upped to President of International in 2007.

LICENSING

Moonscoop furthers its licensing and merchandising plans for Code Lyoko by partnering with 3D Duo, a French creator/producer of video games, to develop a new social online Code Lyoko game.  The new game will reflect the look and feel of the Code Lyoko TV series and is slated to launch in spring 2012 as a Facebook application, with plans to roll out to other online platforms thereafter.  Moonscoop is currently in production with partners France Television and Canal J on the fifth season Code Lyoko Evolution (26×26), which will feature live action elements for the first time, along with CGI animated sequences.  Recent Code Lyoko game releases include Nintendo DS, PS2, PSP and Wii.

In addition to helping young kids navigate early life situations, Sesame Street‘s popular Muppets Bert & Ernie can now help us really get around as voices for TomTom and Garmin GPS devices thanks to Locutio Voice Technologies and Sesame Workshop.  The two companies are releasing the original voices of Bert & Ernie for TomTom and Garmin personal navigation devices in English-speaking territories and select countries around the world.  I just hope that Bert doesn’t get as frustrated with me as he can get with Ernie.  Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch will follow on the Garmin platform later this month.  Yes we can expect the driving instructions to include the famous Sesame Street Muppet humor samples of which include:  Ernie; “In 50 yards, we will reach our destination”. Bert; “I’m thrilled down to my Argyll socks.” Cookie Monster: “Oh boy, we lose satellite reception. So now we no find da cookies.”

Portuguese licensee Secret Fragrancy for the preschool property Dinosaur Train will release a new Dinosaur Train gift set this holiday including a shampoo and a shower and bath gel. The Portuguese licensing agent for Dinosaur Train is atxilipu.  Secret Fragrancy will release several more Dinosaur Train products in Portugal in the next few months, and plans to expand to Spain and France in 2012 with a range of kid’s brands.  Dinosaur Train can be seen in Portugal on free to air RTP2 and on cable on Canal Panda.

MARKETING

Poptropica launches its new customizable Holiday Poptropica Wish List for 2011.  The virtual world’s new list allows kids to print and create a personalized gift list of the Poptropica items they already have and the ones they would like, which might include Poptropica toys including plush figures, action figures (three or six-inch) and playsets, manufactured by Jazwares, and available at Toys “R” Us and Barnes & Noble.  Oh, there is also the Poptropica 30-inch inflatable blimp and the new book, Poptropica: The Official Guide, among other items.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Germany’s Your Family Entertainment launches its kid/family entertainment channel yourfamily in Bulgaria.  A localized version of the yourfamily channel can be available via the IPTV and VOD platform of VIVACOM, the mobile platform Vodafone Live of the mobile network provider MTEL, the IPTV-Platform Megalan and the Bulgarian cable operators MSAT, Cores Group and TV-NET.  Bulgarian studio Doli is responsible for creating the localized content for the channel.  The distribution of the Bulgarian feed of yourfamily is made available in cooperation with media agency Braykoff Media.

Portfolio International completes the sale of the second season and a holiday special of the preschool series The Cat in the Hat knows a Lot About That! to Disney Junior Australia and Disney Junior Italy.  The new second season and holiday special got the greenlight for production just before Mipcom.  The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! is a Portfolio Entertainment/Collingwood O’Hare Production, A Canada UK Co-Production produced with PBS (US), Treehouse (Canada), in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s Entertainment and with the financial participation of the Canadian Media Fund, the Shaw Rocket Fund, and the Government of Canada.  The series is distributed by Portfolio International.

CBeebies US Hispanic will host a Thanksgiving Special featuring episodes of the series Yo Puedo Cocinar on Wednesday-Friday, November 23-25, 2011 at 1-3p, and again at 5-7p as part of CBeebies’ time to Discover programming block. As usual Yo Puedo Cocinar host Katy Ashworth will prepare various recipes with her young helpers. CBeebies is available on Channel 848 as part of DISH Networks’ DishLATINO package, channel 1085 as part of Cablevision’s iO en espanol and Channel 1727 as part of Verizon FiOS TV.  CBeebies is distributed by BBC Worldwide Channels Latin America & US Hispanic, headquartered in Miami, Florida.

Game publisher P2 Games debuts the first official Tracy Beaker mobile app, We Love Tracy Beaker, for iPad, iPhone and iPod in the UK.  The new app includes a planner, calendar and address books, as well as seven mini-games and activities.  The app is based on the quirky characters from the Tracy Beaker books created by Jacqueline Wilson and illustrator Nick Sharratt.   Activities include: Tracy’s Makeover, create your own avatar; Tracy’s Word Search Game; Tracy’s Daydream Doodles Activity  create scenes onto a range of background and save the doodles; Tracy’s Trivia Quiz, multiple choice trivia questions; Tracy’s Match-3 Game; Tracy’s Scratchies; and Tracy’s Magic Orb.

Entertainment One Family bolsters the online presence of its three core brands with a digital makeover, including a new enhanced web site and a dedicated Facebook page for Peppa Pig.  Official Facebook pages and online stores have also launched for Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom and Humf, and Twitter accounts for all three brands will launch soon.  All of these digital projects have been managed by London agency Bionic Communications.  The recently re-launched PeppaPig.com includes Peppa Me feature that allows kids to customize one of the characters from the series and create a personalized avatar.  Additionally, once registered on the site kids/parents can log on and use their avatar to play Peppa related games, as well as receive promotions, applications, newsletters, competitions and brand updates.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) expands its team in Washington DC with two senior appointments in Washington DC.

  • Cybele Daley is appointed SVP/Government Affairs.  With an extensive background in government relations, Daley takes on her new position that was previously held by Michael O’Leary.  Responsible for development of the MPAA’s federal agenda, its strategy and implementation, Daley will report to O’Leary, Sr. EVP/Global Policy and External Affairs.  She will manage and supervise MPAA activities before all federal entities including Congress, agencies and regulators. She will also serve as primary liaison to member companies and their federal advocacy.  Daley was previously with Van Scoyoc Associates, where she worked on behalf of private sector and non-profit clients, including the MPAA.  Previously, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General and acting Assistant Attorney General at the Department of Justice (2005-8).  Additionally, Daley also held government liaison and enforcement positions at the Department of Justice, the Marshals Service and the Department of Treasury.
  • Anna Soellner is named VP/Corporate Communications.  Soellner will oversee message strategy and public programming. She will report to Laura Nichols, EVP/ Global Communications. Soellner previously served as VP/Communications at the Center for American Progress (CAP).  She served as a Luce Scholar and Assistant to the Legislator at the Office of Martin Lee, Chairman of the Hong Kong, Democratic Party. She also held positions at the Treasury Department in the office of Legislative Affairs and Public Liaison and with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
