By 2014, tablets will be in the hands of nearly 90 million Americans, representing about 36% of all Internet users and nearly 28% of the U.S. population, according to a new report from eMarketer . By the end of 2011, the number of Americans using the devices will hit 33.7 million, more than double last year. Apple’s iPad will continue to lead the market, though competitors will gain some market share. Still, by 2014 iPads will comprise more than two-thirds of overall tablets used in the United States.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Brazilian streaming site and mail-order-DVD service NetMovies Entertainment, Inc. inked a multi-year deal with Miramax for streaming access to the studio’s titles including Pulp Fiction, The English Patient, Amelie, There Will Be Blood and others starting in December. Users can watch across computers, connected TVs, tablets, Blu-Ray players, and Smartphones.

The 3-D network, 3net launched its online site at 3net.com , with 2D and 3D video, the site’s owners said. The network is a joint venture of Sony, Discovery and IMAX.

Travel Channel partnered with Rand McNally’s Tripology.com to create a multi-platform partnership that lets viewers connect with online trip experts who are familiar with the details showcased in many of Travel Channel’s programming including Anthony Bourdain’s The Layover. More details on the shows and locations will be available in videos at Travelchannel.com and viewers can then connect with travel specialists via Tripology.com to create itineraries to these places.

As part of the marketing for the new season of All on the Line with Joe Zee this Friday, Sundance Channel linked up with Scoop NYC. Facebook users who like the brand’s Facebook page are entered to win a new winter wardrobe and personal styling session with a designer from the Sundance show.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

The new social Wheemee launched as an alternative to Facebook and Twitter, and is aiming to attract users eager to discuss news of the day and national topics. The site says it’s catering its service as a platform for discussion of social movements, such as the Occupy Movement, and includes forums on the top 20 news topics of the moment.

San Francisco’s digital technology shop Amplify Social launched rich media content network The Virtual Fan Network to connect brands and athletes on short-term, CPM-based campaigns, such as layering in branded messages into an athlete’s social media presence. Athletes in the stable include MLB’s Tim Lincecum and the NFL’s Marcedes Lewis, Mike Wallace, Michael Turner, and Brett Favre. 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

SheKnows.com launched a new Web series Style Showdown starring Melissa Rivers. The show is sponsored by fashion site Shoparatti and the deal calls for five new episodes.

Online video views will grow 20% worldwide this year to 770 billion, up from 640 billion last year, said research firm Futuresource Consulting. In addition, paid online video revenues worldwide will surpass $3 billion this year, boosted mainly by Netflix’s streaming service, but also by online purchase and rentals, the researchers said. The paid-for revenue will reach nearly $7 billion by 2015. The online video ad market should grow 50% this year alone, Futuresource added.

The American Music Awards topped the buzz charts with the most social chatter, comments and uniques, according to social ranking service SocialGuide . The AMAs were followed by Fox’s The X Factor and MTV’s The Guy Code.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

REELZCHANNEL released an enhanced viewing app for mini-series The Pillars of the Earth, which debuts on Dec. 4. The app syncs with the on-air episodes and includes behind-the-scenes details from the novel, tidbits and social connections.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Premium entertainment service EPIX promoted Andy Hunter to General Manager of Digital Media Applications and Products, a newly-created post overseeing digital products including authenticated apps. He previously served as Head of Marketing. He’ll continue to report to Epix President and CEO Mark Greenberg.

NBCU’s DailyCandy.com hired Fernando Romero as VP of Ad Sales. He’ll oversee the site’s email, Web, social, mobile, e-commerce and event ad sales and will also work across NBCU’s sister sites of iVillage, Fandango and Televisionwithoutpity.com . Most recently, he worked as Managing Director of National Partnerships at Gilt City, a part of Gilt Groupe.

Getty Images promoted Andrew Saunders to Senior VP of Creative Content where he will work to oversee the Getty’s photographic, music and video content around the world.

Eager aspiring actors, unusual families or anyone with a great idea for a new reality TV show may want to consider pitching it on TV Writers Vault that operates as a database for producers, studios and networks for reality series ideas. The site’s founder Scott Manville said since the site’s launch six years ago more than two dozen projects have been purchased via the site. Manville said executives at Fox TV Studios, ABC, CBS, Discovery/TLC, Lifetime TV, Sony Pictures TV use the site.
