Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 20, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, the final movie in the Twilight Saga franchise that opened last week, fuels Lionsgate to break through the $1 billion dollar mark at the 2012 domestic box office. Lionsgate is the first of the smaller studio to reach this milestone in 2012. Lionsgate also expects to push past the $1 billion mark at the international box office and the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office (combined domestic and international) in the next few weeks. In its opening weekend Breaking Dawn – Part 2 took in $340.9 million worldwide ($141.1 domestically), in its opening weekend. Also helping Lionsgate this year was the release of The Hunger Games (March 23, 2012), which earned $408 million domestically. Both The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games are based on young adult novels.
Anubis Unlocked, the UK-produced behind-the-scenes companion series to Nickelodeon‘s House of Anubis, heads back into production this week in Liverpool. The new group of 8×11 weekly shorts will debut both on-air and online (www.nick.co.uk/anubis) in 2013. The Anubis Unlocked series stars from House of Anubis and will feature exclusive on set content (interviews with cast and crew, tours) and extra clues to the unfolding mystery in season three. Nickelodeon UK, which is comprised of seven dedicated entertainment channels for K4-15, is a joint venture between Viacom International Media and BSkyB Networks.

LICENSING
DHX Media signs several new and renewed licensing deals for its preschool property Caillou:
– New licensee, Percy3D, a video platform that allows users to create personalized video moment using 3D visual effects and multimedia technologies, picks up the worldwide digital party invitation rights to Caillou in a 3-yr deal; DHX also renews its deal with Buy Seasons for Caillou party goods; ID Toys signs on the as US and multi-territory master toy licensee for licensed articles in plush, figured dolls, plastic vehicles, play sets, Jack in the Box, puzzles, art and craft activities, molded cases and stickers; Komar Kids will create sleepwear; Karmin International has been appointed US licensee for Caillou Color a Puzzle, Four in One Progressive Puzzle, 40 pc Puzzle, Talking Floor Puzzle, 2 sided bilingual floors puzzle products.
– In Canada new Caillou licensees include: Centura Brands as licensee for shampoo, bubble bath, soaps, body wash, lip balms and poufs; Garel Sales Agencies will launch Caillou-branded storage containers of all shapes and sizes; Daytime Entertainment will create Caillou meet and greet Costumes.
Curious George launches its seventh season on PBS Kids on Monday, December 3 (check local listings), with a trip down under and featuring a special appearance by animal conservationist Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late Steve “The Crocodile Hunger” Irwin. In the first episode, Monkey Down Under, George and The Man with the Yellow Hat set out on an Australian Outback Adventure. During the episode Bindi teaches George about koalas, emus, kangaroos and other animals. The season premiere is followed by two more debut episodes airing Tuesday and Wednesday, December 4-5 (check local listings). Curious George is a production of Imagine Entertainment, WGBS Boston, and Universal 1440 Entertainment. The series is sponsored on PBS Kids by Chuck E. Cheese’s, Stride Rite Children’s Group, and ABCmouse.com. Additional funding is provided by public TV viewers.
In other PBS Kids programming, Scholastic Media‘s animated film Clifford’s Really Big Movie will debut on PBS Kids on Friday, December 14 (check local listings), as part of its yearlong celebration of the Clifford’s 50th anniversary. A Scholastic Entertainment production, Clifford’s Really Big Movie was originally released in 2004 by Warner Brothers and features the voices of the late John Ritter (as Clifford), Wayne Brady, Jenna Elfman and John Goodman, as well as Grey Delisle (What’s New Scooby-Doo), Jess Harnell (Lilo and Stitch), Kel Mitchell (Kenan and Kel, All That, Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle), Judge Reinhold (Beverly Hills Cop movies), Kath Soucie (Rugrats Go Wild), Cree Summer (A Different World), and Wilmer Valderrama (That 70’s Show). The series, currently in its 12th season on PBS Kids, is based on author/illustrator Norman Bridwell’s Clifford the Big Red Dog books, the first of which was published in 1963.
The fourth annual TeenNick HALO Awards (1×90) debuts on TeenNick (www.teennick.com/halo) tonight at 10p. Hosted and executive produced by Nick Cannon, the awards show recognizes real teens who are out there “Helping and Leading Others” (HALO). The event was taped live at the Hollywood Palladium on Saturday, November 17, the awards special premiered last night on Nick at Nite at 8p. This year’s TeenNick HALO Awards special features celebrities Ne-Yo, Tyra Banks, Justin Bieber, Josh Duhamel and Emma Stone teamed with teen honorees. Also appearing in the special are Neon Trees, Nicole Richie, Lucy Hale, Jesse Williams, Heather Morris, Anthony Anderson, Big Time Rush’s James Maslow and Carlos Pena Jr., Victoria Justice and the cast of See Dad Run (Nick at Nite). There were also musical performances by Neon Trees and No-Ye. Presenting sponsors of the fourth annual TeenNick HALO Awards are Chevrolet, CoverGirl, Reese’s Puffs cereal and Target.
9 Story Entertainment completes new sales of its kid-targeted live-action, short-form series Making Stuff (104×5). Minika TV (Turkey) and Bowmanbridge Media (for Taiwan) both picked up the first two seasons of Making Stuff, while Zee Learn (India) picked up the first season. Making Stuff can currently be seen across Canada on TVO, TFO, SCN and Knowledge Network, and in addition on channels around the world including Noga (Israel), S.I.C. (Portugal) and has recently been sold to Bomanbridge Media for Malaysia and Brunei.
Sprout, a 24-hour preschool channel, picked up the preschool holiday special Caillou’s Holiday Movie from DHX Media.
Austrian public broadcaster ORF acquired the exclusive free TV rights to the new re-mastered 3D CGI animated series Heidi (39×22) for air in Austria and South Tyrol in a deal with Studio 100 Media. The classic Heidi animated series will be revived and produced by Studio 100 Animation and Flying Bark Productions. Heidi is set for delivery at the end of 2014, with Studio 100 Media responsible for its worldwide distribution. The series is based on the original story created by author Johanna Spyri in 1880 in her iconic book Heidi’s Years of Wandering and Learning, which has sold 50+ million copies. The Heidi animated series premiered in 1977 on ZDF (Germany) and has since been seen in 46+ 46 countries. ORF also televises the revived 3D CGI animated versions of Maya The Bee and Vicky the Viking.
Aardman Digital, Aardman Animation’s digital arm, has produced a new online game for Cartoon Network based on its original animated series The Amazing World of Gumball. The new game, Dino Donkey Dash, is based on the episode titled The Quest and is comprised of a series of mini-games. Dino Donkey Dash, which debuted in the US on CartoonNetwork.com this August, is launching on Cartoon Network’s websites across EMEA.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), the commercial and brand extension arm of FremantleMedia, makes two new appointments to its London office:
– FME names Carl Lumbard to the newly created position of Head of Licensing Strategy & Business Development/Kids & Family Entertainment, EMEA. He will report to Mark Newton EVP/Licensing EMEA and Dominic Burns SVP/Licensing & Entertainment EMEA. Lumbard will be responsible for the commercial development of brands within the division’s portfolio across EMEA and will serve as the link between the LA-based Kids & Family Entertainment content team, led by Sander Schwartz, and the licensing, home entertainment and TV distribution teams across EMEA. Lumbard will also work closely with the FME Brand Management & Marketing team led by Kate Schlomann. A 20-year industry veteran, Lumbard spent the last 14 years with 20th Century Fox where he most recently served as SVP and MD/Licensing and Merchandising, EMEA. He previously worked for Promotional Partners Worldwide and Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
– FME appoints Jayne Stephens as Head of Brand Partnerships UK. She will work closely with advertising, marketing and digital agencies, and directly with brands, to deliver new commercial, cross-platform opportunities for key FME properties. Stephens was previously Sponsorship and Content Director, Starcom MediaVest Group. Stephens will be based in London reporting to Dominic Burns, SVP/Licensing & Entertainment, FME.
RATINGS
Disney Channel‘s premiere of the new Disney Junior animated movie Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess on Sunday, November 18 (7-7:50p) delivered 5.2 million Total Viewers 2+ and was the top cable TV telecast of 2012 among K2-5 (1.5 million) and Girls 2-5 (954,000). The movie also serves as the top cable telecast in five-years with K2-5, and in 10+ years among Girls 2-5. Additionally, it becomes Disney Channel’s number one telecast in its history among Girls 2-5. The Sofia the First animated series is slated to premiere in January (date TBA).
