Cyn opsis: Kids!
11/16/10

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Discovery Communications acquires the BBC Worldwide‘s 50% interest in their joint ventures Animal Planet and Liv (f/k/a People + Arts) for US$156 million.  The two companies will continue their co-production pact.  For the BBC, the sale of its portion of the two channels will allow it to focus on the expansion of its fully owned and branded international channels, which includes BBC America, CBeebies, BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, and BBC HD.  The sale is in keeping with the review of BBC Worldwide, the broadcaster’s commercial arm, by its own regulator the BBC Trust, which was released last year.  As for their continued work together, the BBC and Discovery extend their North America co-production and acquisitions deal by two year to 2014.  Programs produced under the partnership include Life, Planet Earth, Blue Planet and Wonders of the Solar System, and the upcoming Frozen Planet (2011).

15 animated feature films have been accepted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 83rd Academy Awards.  According to the academy rules for this category, “in any year in which 8-15 animated features are released in LA County, a maximum of 3 motion pictures may be nominated.  If 16 or more animated features are submitted and accepted in the category, a maximum of 5 motion pictures may be nominated.”  These movies can also qualify for Oscars in other categories.  The 83rd Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 8:30a at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.  The Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center, and televised on ABC, as well as around the world.  The animated movies accepted for consideration are (alphabetically):

  • Alpha and Omega
  • Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
  • Despicable Me
  • The Dreams of Jinsha*
  • How to Train Your Dragon
  • Idiots and Angels
  • The Illusionist*
  • Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole
  • Megamind
  • My Dog Tulip
  • Shrek Forever After
  • Summer Wars*
  • Tangled
  • Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
  • Toy Story 3

*These movies have not yet had their required LA qualifying run.
