CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

11/15/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, November 15, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC has pulled Night Stalker, effective immediately.  Production has also been shut down.  As for this Thursday at 9p, look for a 2-hour Primetime, tho long term is still a good question.  And here’s another question for you … will Night Stalker continue to be part of ABC’s iTunes video package? There are, after all, three more episodes that have not yet been aired. Does it matter?

Over at NBC, the Jerry Bruckheimer/Warner Bros. TV series E-Ring has gotten a nice shot in the arm with an order for 9 more episodes.

And while some reports say NBC has chosen not to renew The Apprentice: Martha Stewart, Mark Burnett Prods say the idea was never to do more than a single season of the show. NBC concurs and offered this official statement: “The plan from the very beginning was always to produce only one cycle of The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.” The Apprentice has its series finale on December 21.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *MTV will launch a new reality series in 2nd Qtr next year called The Hills.  This show picks up where Laguna Beach left off, following Lauren (aka LC) as she heads off to live on her own in Los Angeles, attend college and hold down an internship at Teen Vogue.  Laguna Beach had its season finale last night.

HBO is scheduled to launch its new series House Arrest on November 24, featuring Christopher Columbo, the son of alleged crime boss Joseph Columbo, who was indicated on racketeering in March 2004.  You’ll recall he received house arrest status, which was then soften a bit so he could spend more time with his family.  His family apparently hangs out in nightclubs, strip joints, etc., which is where the HBO House Arrest cameras followed him. Prosecutors wanted to prevent Columbo from doing any more TV shows, saying he was making a mockery of his conditions of bail.  A hearing was held before a Federal judge on Monday, and she disagreed with the “mockery” part, and told prosecutors she would be happy to change her ruling if they could prove he violated the conditions of his bail. Until that happens, Columbo is free to continue with HBO’s House Arrest.

In two separate deals, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network will provide programming content for Tiger Electronics‘ new, tween-targeted, portable VUGO Multimedia System.  Launching this month, the VUGO has a 3-inch color screen and 128MB of memory storage, and will provide tweens with access to  a slew of TV shows, music, and photos.  Cartoon Network programming available for download includes: Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Ed, Edd n Eddy among others. Nickelodeon shows available are SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats and Rocket Power along with bunches of others, and more Nick programming will be added in the next few months.  Tiger Electronics is a subsidiary of Hasbro.

Time Warner Inc. has finalized a carriage deal with Q Television Network on its NYC cable system, effective this Thursday, November 17.  Q is the third channel on the Time Warner system that targets the GLBT audience joining — Here! on the PPV tier, and Viacom’s Logo on the basic tier.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *NBC is considering an hour-long project called Lipstick Jungle, based on the novel by Candace Bushnell.  If her name sounds familiar, Sex and the City was based on her writings.  However, with this project, Bushnell is on board to write the project along with Robin Schiff, who will both also exec produce. The story is about three very wealthy women living in New York City and doing everything they feel is necessary to maintain their social and financial status.

Fox has given a script commitment with penalty for a Fox Studios drama project called Nicolai and Julie, a married couple who begin the season by breaking up, says Variety.  From Mikkel Bodensen and written by John Scott Shephard, this show is based on a popular primetime soap in Denmark.

Also from Variety, USA Network is looking at another project from Fox Studios and Mikkel Bodensen called Burn Notice, about a blackballed special agent who sets up his own shop as a private detective. The project is written by Matt Nix who will also exec produce.

Fox has ordered a script of Welcome to Paradise from Fox TV Studios, a 30m project about the life of actor Michael Rosenbaum’s early teen years in the 1980s after his family uprooted from New York to Indiana, according to Hollywood Reporter.  Rosenbaum is the star of Smallville, and for this project he is partnering with that shows writer/exec producer Greg Beeman.  Both will exec produce, along with Jordan Levin, Pete Aronson and Mike Karz.

ABC Family has cast Melinda Allen in The Mud Show, a comedy pilot about the crew and performers in a run down one-ring circus, all trying to get along with the new owner. The project is exec produced by Tom Bull and Keith Truesdell, who is also directing.

CBS has ordered a script with penalty of a 60m comedy/drama starring Minnie Driver and called Keeping Up with the Joneses, which, according to Variety, has the same feel as Moonlighting. In this project, Driver is an undercover agent who works with her husband/partner, and they attempt to save their on-the-rocks marriage at the same time as saving the world, or at least the neighborhood. The project is from Solaris and Paramount Network TV.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Horowitz Associates Inc., a market research and consulting company, has named Fred Petrosino as General Manager, Broadcast. Fred is a 30-year senior management broadcast veteran who will work with Horowitz to deliver primary survey research services and digital strategy to clients within the broadcasting industry.  Kudos to you Fred.  * RATINGS *Nov Sweep: Day #11 – Sunday — A18-49 Analysis:  Almost as if the rest signed a non-compete clause, ABC held all the cards on Sunday night, posting a 7.5/18 A18-49 for the night, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. Fox’s NFL run-over led the 7p hour with a 5.8/16, doubling the closest competitors – ABC and CBS each with an 8 share.
