Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 13, 2007, and this is your first early morning.
Parthenon Entertainment Ltd, the UK-based producer/distributor of kid’s and factual programming, is acquired by Arkaga Fund, the private investment and business management group, which also owns the kid-centric entertainment rights company, Entara Ltd. Together, Parthenon and Entara will create a family-centric global entertainment business, offering a combination of their program production, distribution, and licensing with Parthenon representing their respective programming libraries internationally. Carl Hall, Founder and Managing Director, Parthenon Entertainment will become CEO of the new group. David Cardwell, Chairman of Entara will also become Chairman, Parthenon Entertainment, while Theresa Plummer-Andrews will remain as Non-Executive Director, Entara and take the same role at Parthenon. Regis Brown, former EVP, Entara, joins Parthenon as President/Parthenon Kids and will oversee all Parthenon Kid’s properties as well as those previously handled by Entara.
Jetix Europe N.V. has resumed negotiations with Canalsat concerning carriage of its French channel on the platform. As part of the discussions both parties have agreed to extend carriage from December 15, 2007 to March 31, 2008, in doing so this ensures the channel will continue to air on Canalsat while a new deal is negotiated.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nick Jr. is set to premiere four new episodes of its preschool live-action music series Yo Gabba Gabba Monday-Friday, November 26-30 at 11:30a, one Monday’s episode repeats on Friday. The new episodes feature special guest appearances by Laila Ali, Sugarland, and Sean Kingston. Additionally, Hip Hop artist Biz Markie will provide viewers with a lesson in how to beat box during the mark’s Magic Pictures drawing segment. Yo Gabba Gabba is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain.
Mind Candy, the creators behind PerplexCity, launches a beta period for its Moshi Monsters, a kid 7-12-targeted virtual online social community this month ( www.moshimonsteres.com ) in the UK. Combining casual games, social networking as well as educational elements, Moshi Monsters is a multi-player online game where kids can select an animated monster, which they can then customize, name and care for through interacting with other monsters and solving various puzzles. During the beta period UK consumers can purchase a Moshi Monsters MoPod (US$10.40), a mobile phone accessory that lights up and spins when a mobile phone rings or text is received, and use a special code to access the site and adopt a virtual Moshi Monster. Like other kid-centric social network and gaming sites (e.g. Club Penguin), players earn rewards that can be used to buy food, furniture and treat all of which help keep their monster healthy and happy. Following the official full-scale simultaneous UK and US launch at the beginning of 2008, Moshi Monsters will be free. The game requires no downloads and has security measures built in.
EM.Entertainment, producer and distributor of kids programming, has entered into a two-year license deal with VOD company glowria, in German-speaking countries, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Included under the deal are a range of kid-targeted programming such as the classic titles Emil and the Detectives, The Flying Classroom, Hello Spencer and fairy tales including Snow White and Cinderella, and more contemporary ones such as Art Alive and The Sleepover Club. Glowria offers its VOD service as a B2B service and addresses through telecommunication companies, internet service and cable network providers, IPTV platforms and operators of e-commerce portals. EM.Entertainment recently acquired a stake in us-based VOD platform Kabillion.
With the aim of providing parents with useful information about various entertainment outlets for kids, What They Like, Inc., opens up shop this week. Simultaneously, the new company launches whatheyplay.com, a resource for parents that offers objective and practical descriptions, in understandable language, about the content of new and popular videogames. Additionally, What They Like has also entered into a content and retail partnership with Amazon, under which content from What They Play about videogames available via Amazon.com will be Amazon’s customers.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Mission City Press names DIC Entertainment as the worldwide licensing agent for merchandise and interactive content for its The Beginners Bible. Zondervan will continue to serve as the master publishing partner for all print products related to the property. DIC is charged with extending The Beginner’s Bible by developing a line of branded products, including toys, apparel, accessories, and an online community, targeted to K2-5 as well as their parents and grandparents. First published 18 years ago, The Beginners Bible artwork and text was updated in 2005, and it is available in 20+ languages.

81% of Kids/Teens 4-17 and 38% of all adults play computer or video games at least occasionally, according to a new poll from AOL Games and The Associated Press. However, if you think that video game playing is one arena where kids and adults might play together, think again, because 43% of parents report they never play with their kids, while 30% said they less than an hour, with younger parents saying they were more likely to play games with their kids than older parents. Of the adult gamers surveyed, half are under 40-years-old, while 27% are under 30, and only a third of these are married with kids. The average adult gamer reports spending 2-hrs a week playing video games, a number that doubles per week for those who play shooter games, and 5-hrs a week for role-play game fans. 93% of adult gamers play online games at home. Additionally, contrary to conventional wisdom, which would have us think that the game-playing adults are mostly male, the poll finds that 45% of adults gaming are female. That number does skew younger and male when it gets down to adult hard-core gamers (who play at least 3-hrs a week), 59% are under 40 and 32% under 30, and 58% are male.
Categories and nominees for Spike TV’s 2007 Video Game Awards have been announced. The network’s 5th annual Video Game Awards will be taped in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, and will air on Spike TV on Sunday, December 9, 9-11p. The official sponsors for this year’s show are Burger King, GameStop, Mountain Dew, Stride Gum, Tag, US Air Force, and Verizon Wireless. While many of the games carry Mature ESRB ratings, there are a good number of titles nominated that are rated for Teen, Everyone, and Everyone 10+. Categories and nominees include:

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Peter Low is appointed President and COO, Ensequence, the interactive TV company. Based in NYC, Low will work with cable and satellite distributors, TV programmers and advertisers. He will report to Dalen Harrison, who continues to serve as CEO. Most recently, Low was EVP cable distribution and marketing for MTV Networks and BET Networks, heading cable distribution efforts for their collective 26 branded channels, as well as distribution strategy for their digital channels. Previously, he was VP/Programming, Cablevision. Low sits on the board of Cable Positive and The Jazz Foundation of America.
The Weinstein Company names Matthew Frankel as Chief Communications Officer and SVP/Corporate Affairs. Frankel will be based in The Weinstein Company’s New York office and will report to the co-chairmen, Bob and Harvey Weinstein. Frankel had been VP/Corporate Communications at Rainbow Media. Julie Cloutier will continue to serve in her role as Director/Corporate Communications, focusing on media relations for the company. Sarah Levinson Rothman, who has been head of corporate communications for the company since its inception, will transition into serving as a consultant for the company and as an advisor to Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
