Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, May 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

The CW‘s daily Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution programming block which back in The WB network days ran two hours of kids programming, will revamp the block with three strip series as of September 22.  Beginning at 3pm, Telepictures Productions’ new court show Judge Jeanine Pirro, followed by off-netters The Wayans Bros. at 4p and The Jamie Foxx Show at 430p.   The new lineup replaces the current fare of four off-net series – Reba (x2), All of Us and What I Like About You.

Quick program change – NBC will replace the Sunday night repurposed shows Monk and Psych from USA Networks, with four back-to-back encores of The Office, reports Variety. Both series placed fourth among A18-49 overall this past Sunday, which escalated the swift schedule switch.

Product placements in primetime programming during first quarter 2008 increased by 6% for the 11 measured broadcast networks, according to a new report from The Nielsen Company. The 11 measured networks include ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, MNT and NBC with occurrences up +39%, while measured cable networks A&E, Bravo, HGTV, MTV and TLC were virtually flat at -1%. The Nielsen Product Placement Service tracked 117,976 brand placements during first quarter and the primetime show with the most occurrences was NBC’s The Biggest Loser with 3,977 product placements.

VH1’s next celebreality series I Love Money premieres July 13 at 9p and brings together seventeen contestants from Rock of Love, I Love New York and Flavor of Love vying for a cash prize while in Mexico. Hosted by Craig J. Jackson, the twelve episode series will have the stars battle for the $250,000 grand prize instead of love. Starting this week, VH1 will also have specific I Love Money info available on the VH1 Blog at Blog.VH1.com.

HGTV renewed Myles of Style for a second season. The series airs on Thursdays at 830p with host Kim Myles, season two winner of HGTV Design Star and shows off her stylized twist on home design.

Nickelodeon is revamping its Nick at Nite programming block to attract young family viewers and now sports a new logo that looks similar to Nickelodeon’s, according to Variety. Nick at Nite will continue to air off-net sitcoms but will filter in more original series and events to bring in a variety of ages. Two upcoming primetime originals from Albie Hecht include the game show My Family’s Got GUTS and the dog competition show The First Annual Worldwide Fido Awards. Starting in January, the network will air the initial off-net run of Everybody Hates Chris in addition to syndicated episodes of Family Matters.

Now in 35 million homes nationwide, movie-focused network ReelzChannel will launch a free VOD service next month. This product will offer viewers recommendations and information about movies on VOD/Pay-Per-View and premium networks. Added information will include interviews and behind-the-scenes features on movies and filmmakers.

Fox Reality Channel will debut a new weekly series this summer, Reality Binge on July 10 at 7p, per Variety.  Reality Binge, hosted by comedian Eric Toms, is produced by Weller/Grossman Productions.

truTV is debuting exclusive branded content interstitials within Actual Ads and Real Life Stories as well as Reel Movie vignettes. The spots will air as specialized commercial content giving advertisers the chance to integrate within a customized branded feature on truTV. Starting this week, the upcoming film What Happens in Vegas from Twentieth Century-Fox will be featured in Reel Movie vignettes showing the lead stars discussing the movie and their characters.

This sounds pretty cool: Discovery Channel is presenting a two-hour live special Mars: The Phoenix Lands – A Daily Planet Special on May 25 at 7p. Since August 2007, Discovery’s Daily Planet series followed the Phoenix Rover mission and during this special will chronicle the historic landing on Mars live from the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena and be with the scientific team in Tucson. Host Jay Ingram will cover the event as well as interview scientists and take a look at the development and technology behind the rover.

The cost of a 30-second spot in the 2009 Super Bowl on NBC?  The Wall Street Journal reports the tab will run you a cool $3 million/spot, an annual increase of 10% over 2008 rates. Maybe they tell you now so you’ll have plenty of time to save up.

Selling the last of its 16 television stations, Emmis Communications Corp. announced WVUE/New Orleans, the FOX affiliate, was sold to Louisiana Media Co. for $41 million, per TV Newsday. Louisiana Media Co. is principally owned by Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints. The total gross of all 16 stations sold by Emmis is approximately $1.24 billion and this transaction concludes the divestiture of Emmis’ television properties.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy on FOX, sealed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV that could be worth more than $100 million making him the highest paid TV writer/producer. Under the terms of the new deal, which reportedly took two and a half years to negotiate, Seth will remain at 20th TV through 2012. So far the deal includes Seth’s continued work on Family Guy and his two other animated series for 20th TV and Fox, American Dad! and the Family Guy spinoff The Cleveland Show. The agreement includes new media associated with Seth’s TV series in addition to the DVD and merchandising revenue.

NBC Universal made an exclusive overall first look agreement with Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves. The deal gives NBCU a first look on all projects developed by the duo for its broadcast, cable and wireless properties.

Several casting notes, per THR:

  • FOX‘s pilot Courtroom K cast Megan Dodds as the female lead.
  • Mike O’Malley is set to co-star with Christian Slater in the NBC series My Own Worst Enemy.
  • Andrea Anders was added to ABC‘s untitled Victor Fresco single-camera office comedy presentation.
  • SCI FI Channel tapped Peter Fonda for its two-hour pilot titled Revolution.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
:
   As TV networks head into their spring ad brokering ritual known as the Upfront, some digital strategies are being retooled to insure they deliver what really matters to the bottom line – appointment TV viewers. The CW raised eyebrows last month when it announced it would not stream the final 5 episodes of Gossip Girl; instead “watch and win” contests were devised to entice fans to watch the linear episodes in order to learn what they needed to win. The CW is planning additional motivational extensions for next season, according to AdAge, including text message plot hints and personalized messages from actors. Meanwhile, Fox enlisted market research firm Marketing Evolution to help articulate the message that TV advertising still drives purchasing decisions far better than other mediums, reports Mediaweek. The firm concludes that TV is still the lynchpin of a successful marketing campaign while other platforms remain “complementary.”   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:
With Iron Man just out and raking in the dough as the final box office numbers roll in for both domestic ($102.1 million) and international ($98.6 million), I know you will be shocked to hear that Marvel Studios says it plans to produce an Iron Man sequel.  Okay, back on your chair now?  In announcing its Q1 2008 shareholders report, Marvel Entertainment laid out the Marvel Studio move release plan.  We are looking at no Marvel Studios movies for 2009, but 2010 will see the release of the next Iron Man movie (April 30) and a feature film version of Marvel’s character Thor (June 4), which will be followed in summer 2011 by two Avengers movies, The First Avenger: Captain America (a working title, May 6, 2011) and The Avengers (July 2011).  All of these movies will be distributed by Paramount.  Marvel Studios is also developing an Ant-Man movie.  In just a few week Marvel Studios will release The Incredible Hulk (June 13, 2008) distributed by Universal, and studio heads say they plan on continuing that franchise as well. Furthermore under separate feature film production deals work continues on Spider-Man 4 (Sony, date tbd), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Fox, set for May 1, 2009), Punisher: War Zone (Lionsgate, December 2008).    Full edition: CYN KIDS.

iN DEMAND added Emily C. Lewis as Director/Business Affairs and Senior Counsel. She will be involved with the business affairs team that handles drafts, negotiations and review of agreements pertaining to the company’s products and services. Emily will also handle copyright and trademark enforcement as well as counsel on marketing issues and actual and possible litigation situations. Based in the New York headquarters, Emily will report to Michael Berman, SVP/Business Affairs and General Counsel. Additionally, iN DEMAND hired Terri B. Hyacinth as Regional VP/Affiliate Relations who will also report to Michael Berman. Terri will manage relationships and activities with current and future affiliates with the company’s products. She will also represent the company’s East Coast region and will manage the Affiliate Relations team that is based in the New York office.

OTX recruited Audra Priluck as Director/Media and Entertainment Insights. She joins the company from e-Poll Market Research.

Former Oxygen Media advertising sales executive, Mary Jeanne Cavanagh has taken on the newly created position of EVP/Advertising Sales for Gospel Music Channel (GMC). Mary Jeanne reports to Charles Humbard, Founder/President, GMC.

Initiative USA appointed Todd Gordon as SVP/Director of National Broadcast. Todd will head the agency’s national television negotiations for such clients as Hyundai/KIA, Bayer, Kao Brands and Showtime among others. Ray Dundas continues to be in the shared position as SVP/Broadcast Director working on different clients. Additionally, Kris Magel moves up to EVP/National Television to oversee all national television functions.
