FX renewed the drama series Justified with a 13-episode second season order even with six new episodes yet to air in season one. Starring Timothy Olyphant, Justified to date has averaged 3.4 million total viewers and 1.7 million A18-49 viewers through seven weeks with first-run episodes. The series airs Tuesdays at 10p and the season one finale is slated for June 8. Comedy Central premieres the FX comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia starting May 31 with back-to-back episodes at 9p. The half-hour sitcom will air each Monday night on Comedy Central in a two-hour block at 9p. Beginning this Thursday, Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live moves to a new time period, that of 11p during the month of May. The show airs live each Thursday hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen. Sunday’s Conan O’Brien-Steve Kroft interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes drew in 13.34 million total viewers for the 7p hour and delivered a 3.3/10 among A25-54 and a 2.2/8 with A18-49. This was O’Brien’s first interview since leaving NBC and The Tonight Show. In a new report, Nielsen says there were 199 television programs in primetime in the US during the 2008-2009 season, up from 191 programs the previous season. In the 2008-2009 season, dramas made up 40% of all programs; reality equaled 28% in primetime with comedies at 14%, though comedies were down from 16% in the 2007-2008 season. TV One, currently available in more than 50.3 million households, introduces several new and returning series through fourth quarter this year. New TV One series includes:

Helen Wagner, 91, a.k.a. Nancy Hughes on the CBS daytime drama As the World Turns died last Saturday. Helen played the mild-mannered Nancy Hughes character for more than fifty years and her character first opened the soap opera on April 2, 1956 with the words: “Good morning, dear.” Helen held the Guinness World Record for playing the same character on television for the longest time. Helen continued to remain on the cast list of As the World Turns although with a diminished presence on-air. In December 2009, CBS said the soap was being canceled with its last episode scheduled to air this September. ~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~
This Wednesday, Comcast Corporation is launching three new Hispanic hi-def networks in Northern California coinciding with Cinco de Mayo. The networks include Univision HD, TeleFutura HD and Telemundo HD and all will be available via Limited Basic HD service to residential residents and businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area. Univision HD and TeleFutura HD will also launch to Limited Basic HD residential and business subscribers in Central California. CBS and Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. extended their business relationship through a multi-year affiliation deal involving Nexstar Broadcasting’s television station WTAJ/Johnstown-Altoona, the top-rated CBS affiliate in the market.

Leading into the broadcast upfronts, NBC approved its first new drama for next season, Undercovers from J.J. Abrams. The drama’s pilot is co-written, produced and directed by Abrams and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe as a married couple who become reactivated CIA agents after being retired for many years. The project is produced by Bonanza, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Previously, Abrams directed ABC’s Lost pilot in 2004. For Undercovers, Josh Reims is a co-writer and executive producer along with Bryan Burk as executive producer. Barry Sonnenfeld is teaming with Fluent Media Group and Argentina-based Resonant TV on the development of a scripted projected titled Beat the Devil, cites THR. The supernatural thriller is first being pitched to international broadcasters prior to being shopped here in the US. Thus far, the project has sold to Eyeworks in Spain.

Tribune Company appointed Jerry Kersting as President of Tribune Broadcasting, effective immediately. Jerry takes over in charge of the division’s strategic goals and daily operations involving the company’s 23 television stations, its national cable network, WGN America and WGN Radio. Jerry has been Tribune Broadcasting’s COO since December 2009. Jerry joined the company in 2008 as EVP where he was responsible for indentifying strategic opportunities and efficiencies for the company”s numerous media businesses. WGN America hired Bill Holba and Barbara Wineburg as AEs based at the network’s New York office and reporting to David Rotem, SVP/Sales and Marketing. CBS Television Stations named Michele Scaringella as EVP/CFO. Previously, Michele was the SVP/Internal Audit with the CBS Corporation since CBS separated from Viacom in January 2006 and will now serve as CFO for the 29 local CBS O&Os. Additionally, Rick Baran who was the CFO with CBS Television Stations since May 2008 will continue with the division in the newly created position of SVP/Operations. Furthermore, Mike Wittman was upped to SVP/Controller of CBS Television Stations and will also provide oversight of the finance department at WCBS/New York. Paul Kingsley joins Red Peak Group as COO. Paul will be based in London and will also serve as the company’s CEO in Europe. Red Peak Group is an international marketing services firm with offices in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and London. FishBowl Worldwide Media tapped Beth Greenwald as SVP/Unscripted Development and Jennifer Gwartz as SVP/Scripted Development. Both report to Susan Levison, EVP/Creative Affairs. Beth joins from E! Entertainment where she was VP/Original Programming and Series Development and most recently Jennifer was Co-Executive Producer on the series Cupid and Executive Producer on Party Down.
