Well known British TV host and journalist Lorraine Kelly (TV-am, GMTV, ITV Breakfast, Lorraine) will serve as the narrator of the new Cbeebies preschool animated series Raa Raa The Noisy Lion, which premieres Monday, May 9. This is The series revolves around the adventures of Raa Raa, a noisy lion cub who is just starting to find his voice, and his pals Huffty (elephant), Topsy (giraffe), Crocky (crocodile), Zebby (zebra), and Ooo Ooo (monkey), during which they use and refine their communication skills (sounds, gestures, facial expressions, and words). Raa Raa the Noisy Lion is produced by Chapman Entertainment (Little Charley Bear, Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car) and Mackinnon & Saunders (Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox). The series was created by Curtis Jobling (the designer of Bob The Builder), based on an original idea of Keith Chapman, Creative Director at Chapman Entertainment.
Rainmaker Entertainment ( www.rainmaker.com ), a Canada-based CG animation studio, is partnering with the offbeat comedian/actor/author/radio host/illustrator Harland Williams (Dumb and Dumber, Meet The Robinsons, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Robot and Monster, Kick Buttowski, Spooky Buddies, among others) to help develop and produce an original animated feature film based on the adventures of the company’s mascots, Ting & Juma. Earlier this year Rainmaker launched a YouTube channel featuring the original kid/family animated short Zapped!, which stars Ting and Juma. The characters were first introduced in Stumped (1×50 seconds), a short that was featured at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
The Hunger Games‘ District 6 finds its boy/girl Tributes in Ashton Moio (No Ordinary Family, Dexter, iCarly) and Kara Petersen, according to the movie Facebook page. Directed by Gary Ross The Hunger Games movie from Lionsgate is set for release on March 23, 2012.
Cartoon Network will premiere Warner Bros. Animation‘s new comedy series, The Looney Tunes Show, tonight at 8p. Starring best pals Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, the series also features Looney Tunes characters, such as Porky Pig, Lola, Tina, Speedy Gonzales, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepe Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Granny, and so on. Additionally, the show also features the Merrie Melodies animated music videos of original songs, which also showcase an array of characters, and new adventures with the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote in CG. Tonight also includes the second season premiere of the animated series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated at 7:30p.
CiTV (UK) acquires the animated series Almost Naked Animals (40×22) from 9 Story Entertainment. The series is set to premiere this spring on CiTV Channel and in the fall on ITV Breakfast. A comedy, Almost Naked Animals revolves around a group of free-spirited underwear clad animals that run a beachfront hotel.
The Hub scares up an evening of frightening programming for its Friday the 13th Family Fright Night programming stunt on May 13 beginning at 5p. The evening features a four episode marathon of the network’s original series R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series (5-7p), including the first of a special two-part episode (part two of the special episode will run the following night, Saturday, May 14 at 8:30p), and then The Hub Family Movie Night presentation of Gremlins (8-10:30p). Additionally, May 13-31, fans (8-18) of The Haunting can enter the R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour Screams Come True Sweepstakes at www.hubworld.com .
The debut Roary the Racing Car DVD, which features episodes not previously aired on TV, will be available on June 7, 2011 from Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment. The preschool-targeted title (55 minutes) will be simultaneously available as a digital download and on demand release. In addition to the six Roary episodes, the release includes a bonus music video, Roary’s Day at the Seaside. The Roary the Racing Car animated series is narrated in the US by Indy and NASCAR racer Sam Hornish Jr., and can be seen on Sprout.
MARKETING/LICENSING
A Squared Entertainment (A2) and Build-A-Bear Workshop enter into a relationship to bring new products to the market and expand international licensing with several partners, including Enterplay, Playmates Toys, Wild Pumpkin Licensing International and Bulldog Licensing. Additionally, A2 will also develop entertainment and external licensing programs for Build-A-Bear Workshops, and are seeking for new partners and categories for both hard and soft goods.
- Enterplay LLC, a designer and manufacturer of collectible products, will create a line of Build-A-Bear Workshop Fun Paks. The global specialty and mass market program includes trading cards, novelty items, mini plush with trading cards (tied to

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Dish Network Corporation appoints Michael Kelly as President of Blockbuster. Dish Network finalized its purchase of Blockbuster’s assets last week. Prior to this Kelly served as EVP/Dish Network’s Commercial Services division, as well as both the Direct Sales and Media Sales organizations. Kelly previously served in various executive positions for Dish Network. His company, Kelly Broadcasting Systems, a distributor of international radio and TV programming in the US, was acquired by Dish Network in 2000.
Dana Booton is upped to the newly created position of GM, Head of Production for Film Roman. A 20-year animation industry veteran, Booton had been Film Roman’s VP/Production. In that role she most recently served as executive in charge of Film Roman’s current Marvel Entertainment production projects, including, Ultimate Spider-Man, The Super Hero Squad Show, and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Booton joined Film Roman in 2008 after founding Studio NM8, where she served as President and CEO. Prior to that she held several executive roles with Saban Entertainment through its sale (1998) to Fox Family Worldwide and subsequent sale (2001) of Fox Family to ABC Cable Group.
Rob Swartz, VP/Original Series exits Cartoon Network. Based on the West Coast, Swartz oversaw original animated, live-action and alternative series for the network. Looking to the future, Swartz plans to be an indie producer of reality based alternative programming. Prior to joining Cartoon Network, Swartz headed alternative programming SyFy, where he developed/launched Destination Truth and the Ghost Hunters franchise. He previously toiled for NBC Entertainment, Disney/Touchstone Television, and Chris Craft/United Television.
