Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

When Disney XD (DXD) launches in Canada tomorrow June 1, as part of Astral Media family, it will include the network debut of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl at 6:30p.  DXD (www.disneyxd.ca), an ad-supported digital network and multi-platform brand, will feature its live-action and animated series, as well as movie debuts on Saturdays throughout June, beginning with a marathon of its series on Saturday, June 4 at 2p.  Following each marathon at 6:30p, a feature film will debut on the network; the lineup includes Sky High (June 4), Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (June 11/encore), Holes (June 18) and Finding Nemo (June 25).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Universal picks up a new family-targeted action comedy movie (yet to be titled) that will be produced by Jay Roach (producer/Little Fockers, Meet the Parents, Charlie Bartlett, Borat, and director/Austin Powers series), per THR.  The movie is based on a pitch by Larry Stuckey, (a writer on Little Fockers), who will write the movie.  Dean Parisot (Fun With Dick and Jane, and lots of TV episodes) will direct.  The story follows a once adventure seeking couple who settle down to have a family, only to find that things have become staid.  Dad gets wrestles and, with the family in tow, sets off on a vacation, which is really a quest to find a buried treasure.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will debut new episodes of the animated series Johnny Test this summer beginning Monday, June 13 at 7p.  Johnny Test, created and produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment, joins Cartoon Network’s Monday night animated comedy programming line-up, which also includes The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, MAD and Regular Show.

Monster Distributes new program sales for the animated series I’m a Dinosaur (52×2) ahead of Annecy Animation Festival (June 6-11).  Picking up the short-form series are ABC TV (Australia), ATV (Turkey), PT Ungul (Indonesia) Innova Systems (Russia) and Edu.Ar (Argentina).  The series was previously acquired by Orlando Kids (Croatia), United Media (Korea), Innoform (Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong), Noga Communications (Israel) and in Canada by Knowledge Network, TVO, TFO and SCN.  I’m a Dinosaur is the second in sequence, with the first in the series I’m an Animal acquired in 160 countries.  I’m a Monster, the third in the series, is currently in production and I’m a Creepie Crawlie is in development.

Yo Gabba Gabba: Party in a Box!, a new three-DVD box set is set toe release July 12, 2011 ($24.99).  The three discs, Birthday Boogie, Clubhouse and Dancey Dance, includes four Yo Gabba Gabba episodes, each featuring special guests appearances by celebrities including Erykah Badu, The Ting Tings, and Elijah wood.  Of course Biz Markie and Mark Mothersbaugh appear in their recurring segments.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, Yo Gabba Gabba: Party in a Box is distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Walt Disney Company‘s Disney Store has unveiled its accelerated plans to open its interactive concept stores in 40+ locations in 2011, which it says is based at least in part to retail property owners demand for unique shopping experiences.  By the end of this year, Disney Stores expects to have 60 new concept stores in North America and eight countries.  These concept stores provide kids with activities such as  play attractions and where they can build their own toys.  As part of the 25th anniversary of the Disney store chain, the company will remodel a number of its existing stores, including its first ever Disney store in the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California, which will get its makeover in spring 2012.

Mega Brands and Hit Entertainment extend their global licensing partnership to include the preschool property Thomas & Friends.  Under the deal Mega Brands will develop Thomas and Friends-themed Mega Bloks sets, which will include characters from the TV series.  The new Thomas & Friends construction sets will be available beginning this fall for holiday 2011.

Wizards of the Coast ( www.wizards.com  ) will debut its new Dungeons & Dragons ( www.dungeonsanddragons.com) strategy board game, Conquest of Nerath ($79.99), on June 21.  The game is not for younger kids.  In addition to Conquest of Nerath, Castle of Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon board games are also currently available.  Wizards of the Coast is a subsidiary of Hasbro.

NBCUniversal, casual game publisher Legacy Interactive and developer Glyphic Entertainment partner for the Nintendo DSiWare release of House, M.D.  Globetrotting, this week in North America, for 800 Nintendo DSi Points.  The title, which is not aimed at kids, is the first of five game episodes based on the TV series, House, M.D., with new game episodes set for release monthly.  House, M.D. is licensed via Universal partnerships & Licensing on behalf of NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products Group.
