Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 28, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The bidding war for Hulu as well as the speculation around the video site’s future intensified over Memorial Day Weekend. The number of bidders for Hulu now stands at least seven (in no particular order): Silver Lake Management and Hollywood agency William Morris Endeavor, KKR & Co., Guggenheim Digital, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, The Chernin Group, and Yahoo. Most of the bids for Hulu (for either an outright purchase or a minority investment in the company) rolled in last Wednesday, based on a soft deadline set by Hulu owners Disney, News Corp., and Comcast. Yahoo sent in its bid (which AllThingsD reports was in the $600-$800 million range) on Friday morning.
— In other words: What to watch for is how much content Hulu’s current owners are willing to tie to any potential sale, and how that will affect the final purchase price (as it’s been mentioned almost ad nauseum, Hulu is a great service with a terrific user experience, but it means next to nothing if none of its exclusive, premium TV content is available to whoever owns the company next).
Yahoo has launched Cinema & Spice, a weekly cooking show in which hosts Julianna Strickland and Natasha Feldman serve up dishes based on their favorite TV shows and movies. And with Memorial Weekend being dominated by the return of Arrested Development (well, that and the sixth Fast & Furious film), it only made sense that the first couple of episodes of Cinema & Spice focused on dishes inspired by the critically acclaimed resurrected comedy from Mitch Hurwitz (chocolate-covered banana bites, anyone?). The first season of Cinema & Spice, which was previewed during Yahoo’s NewFront presentation to advertisers late last month, consists of 12 episodes, with new episodes debuting on Yahoo Screen every Friday. It’s the first show to debut from Yahoo’s new lifestyle programming slate, which features a variety of shows covering fashion, food, relationships, and health, and launches in full on Yahoo on June 10.
Last week, Twitter announced an array of new partnerships with broadcast and online media companies, one of which was the in-your-face news producer, Vice. Near the end of the week, more details were made available about the Twitter/Vice deal, which centers on a new daily video series called, appropriately enough, #dailyvice. Scheduled to launch in the second half of 2013, the show will offer Vice’s news and culture content in bite-sized clips embedded directly into tweets using Twitter’s cards technology. Similar to the other content deals on Twitter, brands will have the ability to sponsor the content as well as promote it to targeted audience.

Tremor Video filed for an initial public offering late last week. According to AllThingsD, which first reported on Tremor’s S-1 filing, the video ad company hopes to raise $86 million and trade on the New York Stock Exchange (“TRMR”). Tremor Video currently helps advertisers deliver video ads to more than 500 websites and mobile apps. Investors include Canaan Partners, W Capital, Masthead Venture Partners, and General Catalyst. Earlier this year, media reports indicated that several of the biggest video ad networks — namely Adap.tv, Tremor, and YuMe — were planning IPOs for this year.
Microsoft and Google are working together to develop a YouTube app for Windows Phone devices that aligns with the video site’s terms and conditions — specifically: That the app includes video ads and does not allow users to download videos to their phone for offline viewing. The new app will be available on the Windows Phone Store in the coming weeks. Earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled a YouTube app for Windows Phone that it had created after Google had elected not to (citing a lack of Windows Phone owners). The Microsoft-authored app stripped all ads from videos and allowed users to download and watch any YouTube video offline, both of which were serious no-no’s for anyone seeking to develop a YouTube app. Google then sent a letter to Microsoft demanding the company remove its unsanctioned app, which Microsoft cheekily responded to by essentially saying there is no reason the companies shouldn’t work together to build a YouTube app optimized for Windows Phone devices.
—In Other Words: Sometimes, chutzpah pays off.
50% of Aereo customers have an existing pay TV subscription, according to what Aereo’s CEO, Chet Kanojia, said at a Barclays conference last week, per MediaPost. Other nuggets about the live-TV streaming service, by way of a report from Barclays media analyst Anthony DiClemente: 70% of video consumption on Aereo occurs away from the home and 65% of the service’s customers are male. Aereo recently expanded from New York City to Boston, and has plans to move into Atlanta next month.

I’m an obsessive hockey fan — so much so that sometimes it negatively affects my friendships, relationship, and ability to return to family restaurants up and down the East Coast. And as the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs make their slow, bloody way down to the Final Four, I wanted to highlight NBC Sports Live Extra, NBC and NBC Sports’ TV Everywhere service that allows authenticated subscribers to watch every Stanley Cup Playoffs game online and on mobile devices. If you don’t have a subscription to the NBC Sports Network, don’t fret too much: the service currently offers all NBC NHL playoff broadcasts to everyone for free. The service has been clutch for me for the past month, and will continue to be so as I wish unmentionable things upon the Boston Bruins.
