Cynopsis

05/27/08

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, May 27, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The CW‘s Sunday night line up, courtesy of Media Rights Capital and scheduled to launch on September 14th at 630p (yes, 630p), has been revealed and it will include one reality series, a comedy and two dramas, reports Variety:

  • In Harm’s Way kicks off the evening at 630p. This reality show from Craig Piligian has an order for 10 episodes and features people who work in very dangerous jobs – hurricane chasers, avalanche spotters and subway tunnel diggers to name a few.
  • Surviving Suburbia is scheduled to air at 730p. MRC has ordered 13 episodes of this blue-collar comedy from Kevin Abbott told from the perspective of the grumpy dad.
  • Valentine, Inc. at 8p is a drama series from Kevin Murphy that begins with the notion that Greek gods Aphrodite and Eros are in the matchmaking business.
  • Easy Money airs at 9p is about a family of loan sharks, from Andy Schneider and Diane Frolov.

MRC has not yet determined how it will program the 5-630p block, a space typically used by The CW for repeat airings of regular series.

Tonight’s Premiere:
FOX: The Moment of Truth at 8p

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC:  According to Jim at 830p

Prior to the kick off of the fall schedule, NBC will debut another new series – Fear Itself is an anthology series of 13 episodes set to debut on June 5th at 10p, and each penned by a different writers of the thriller genre.

CMT has picked up the repurposing rights of NBC talent competition series Nashville Star, set to debut on June 9th, with Billy Ray Cyrus signed to host and judge.  Other judges include John Rich, Jeffrey Steele and Jewel.  The winner of the competition wins, among other things, a chance to perform at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, also aired on NBC.  On CMT, the series begins airing on June 14.

Last Saturday’s NHL Game 1 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Final telecast on VERSUS posted a 1.8 national HH rating and had more than 2.3 million total viewers tuning in.

The entertainment industry lost two notables over the long holiday weekend:

  • Producer/Director/Actor Sydney Pollack, 73, died yesterday at his home after losing his battle with cancer. You’ll remember Pollack’s work as the director of Tootsie, The Way We Were and Out of Africa, a producer of such notables as Cold Mountain and The Talented Mr. Ripley, and as an actor in Made of Honor, Michael Clayton, Eyes Wide Shut and on TV as Will’s father in Will & Grace.  He is survived by his wife Claire, two daughters and six grandchildren.
  • Comedian Dick Martin, 86, who along with Dan Rowan starred and hosted Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, the variety show from the 1960s that launched the careers of Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin among others, died this past Saturday at a hospital in Santa Monica due to respiratory difficulties. After Laugh-In, Dick’s career continued as a prolific TV director after his split with Dan Rowan in the 1970s. Rowan passed away in 1987.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
:
The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists may not have made much headway on the issue of new media control and compensation in negotiations with the AMPTP over the weekend. AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon sent a letter out to members warning of “tough challenges” involving new media and pointing to an editorial in the LA Times as a way to remind them that studios are not yet making much off the medium. Studios seek the right to re-use TV and film clips online as they see fit under a flat fee structure without having to consult performers as to their usage. The Screen Actors Guild is scheduled to resume negotiations with the AMPTP tomorrow.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .)

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYAlmost 20 years later Indiana Jones still got it.  Paramount released Steven Spielberg’s feature Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull this holiday weekend around the world, earning estimated domestic box receipts of $151.1 million (including the late night Thursday showings) and a worldwide take of $311.1 million.  Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, becomes the second largest opening movie for a 4-day Memorial Day weekend in the US, with $126 million behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Buena Vista/2007), still holding the top spot domestically with $139.8 million.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Globo TV International picked up two new strategic partners in the Asia-Pacific region.  The Brazilian distributor closed a volume agreement with Dream House Entertainment to air its telenovelas in Australia, a deal covering over 1,900 hours of dramas to be broadcast until 2010 via its subscription network La Telenovela (which has programming in Spanish). The channel will have Globo’s telenovelas in three of its slots with The Clone, Terra Speranza and Uga Uga as the first to air. Globo TV International and Dream House Entertainment already have a North American market deal in place.  In the second agreement, Globo TV sold the broadcast rights to an Indonesian dub of The Clone to StarHub. The telecom corporation will debut the telenovela in June on the Senasi subscription channel in Singapore. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL
