Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Nickelodeon greenlights the new live-action music-centric comedy How To Rock (20 episodes), starring Cymphonique Miller and is set to launch in 2012.  Produced by Nickelodeon in association with Alloy Entertainment, How To Rock follows teen Kacey Simon (Miller) who joins a band as the lead singer of a band at her high school that sparks a rivalry with another band that features her former best friends.  Daughter of hip-hop entrepreneur Percy Miller (aka Master P.), Cymphonique has appeared on several series and currently lends her voice to Holly in the animated series Phineas & Ferb.  How To Rock is based on a pilot script by Jim O’Doherty (Grounded for Life, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Tracy Morgan Show) and the proposal for the upcoming Alloy Entertainment book How to Rock Braces and Glasses by Meg Haston, How to Rock will be executive produced by David M. Israel (Grounded for Life, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Tracy Morgan Show), who is also a writer on the series.  Leslie Morgenstein (Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries) and Gina Girolamo (The Lying Game, Nine Lives of Chloe King) will also executive produce under the Alloy Entertainment production banner.

Disney XD orders the series pilot Gulliver Quinn (working title) starring and executive produced actor/writer/filmmaker Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory).  The pilot script for Gulliver Quinn was written by Dan Kopelman (Malcolm in the Middle), who also serves as executive producer on the project with Stan Rogow (Lizzie McGuire) and Heder.  Rob Schrab (The Sarah Silverman Program) will direct.  The single camera comedy revolves around 28-year-old Gulliver, who enrolls in the seventh grade when his family returns from a 15-year expedition in northwest India.  Now back at school, Gulliver makes friends and enemies, including the principle who is not a fan, joins the street hockey team, and finds his former school crush is both the school nurse, and due to budget cuts she’s also the head of the history department.  The pilot is a production of Turtle Rock Productions.

MORE KIDS STUFF

ABC Family picks up the network TV premiere rights to Disney’s feature film Pirates of the Caribbean: ON Stranger Tides from Disney-ABC Domestic Television.  Under the deal, ABC Family ash the first window rights to the network TV premiere of the movie, which it has slated for 2013.

Nickelodeon Latin America commissions 50×60 more episodes of its tween-targeted telenovela Grachi.  The initial series order for Grachi, which launched on May 2, 2011, was for 75 episodes.  Produced in Miami, the series follows Grachi, a young girl as she learns to use her new magical powers, while still dealing with her daily life, including school, boys and rivals.  Comarex distributes Grachi.

Nicktoons will launch the new Voltron animated series, Voltron Force, with the premiere of the commercial-free 90-minute TV movie, Voltron Force: New Defenders Trilogy, on Thursday, June 16, at 8:30p.  The half-hour Voltron Force series, which will air in its regular time slot on Thursdays at 8:30p, features a new theme song produced and recorded by producer/artist Swizz Beatz.  Voltron Force is produced by World Events Productions in association with Classic Media and Kickstart Productions.  Nicktoons.com will offer a Voltron Force show page that will feature video clips, full episodes, flipbooks, character profiles, a show message board and exclusive weekly printables.  The site will also debut a new game, Voltron Force: Ultimate Victory this Friday, May 27.  Additionally, during the TV premiere of Voltron Force on June 16, Nicktoons will offer a Game Code that unlocks the bonus and unlimited “blazing sword” in the game.

Spain-based Imira Entertainment completes a number of new program distribution deals for third party properties.

  • In Spain, pay TV channel Canal Panda Espana acquires sevens shows from Imira’s slate including: five series from Millimages  Bugged (52X7), Corneil & Bernie (52X13), Hilltop Hospital (52X11), Monk (52X3) and The Gnoufs (52X13); Pororo (52X7) from Iconix; and live-action series Wicked Science (52X26) produced by Jonathan M. Shiff Productions, FFC, Film Victoria, Network Ten and ZDF Enterprises.
  • Also in the territory, free TV channel Euskal Telebista picks up Monk and Bugged for the Basque country, while in Portugal Canal Panda has picked up Wicked Science for pay TV.

Beta Films, a Germany-based distributor inks sales for kid-targeted animated movie titles.  In the US, Starz acquires Princess Lillifee and Moonbeam Bear, which are both also available as TV series (Lillifee 26×11, Moonbeam 48×13) from Beta Film’s family entertainment label Wunderbox.  Moonbeam Bear has also been acquired by Disney Junior Channel in Spain.  Produced by Caligari Film and WunderWerk in co-production with Beta Film, Universum Film, WDR and Ismael Feichtl, Princess Lillifee is set for delivery at the end of 2011, while Moonbeam Bear is already available.  The new Princess Lillifee TV series will be available from September 2011.  Moonbeam Bear is produced by Caligari Film and WunderWerk in co-production with Beta and Universum Film in association with ZDF/Ki.Ka.  The feature film Princess Lillifee and The Little Unicorn will be released in Germany this September by Universum.

FunGoPlay ( www.fungoplay.com ), a new kid-targeted online sports theme park and virtual world that brings together offline and online play, partners with Metaverse Mod Squad, an online kids safety expert and provider of services for social, gaming, and online communities, for its upcoming launch.  FunGoPlay is designed to encourage kids to get outside and play with “connected sports gear that keeps track of how much kids are playing,” and then rewards them for that activity with in-game bonuses.  Under the deal, Metaverse Mod Squad will help manage and grow the site’s online community while providing a safe environment for kids by overseeing community management, customer support, and quality assurance, as well as consulting on strategy for the kid-targeted virtual world.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hit Entertainment signs seven new licensing deals for its CGI animated preschool property Mike the Knight (52×12).  Co-produced with Nelvana Studio, the series is set to air on CBeebies (UK), TF1 (France) and Treehouse (Canada) this fall, and then ABC Australia, SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway) and YLE (Finland).  Signing on as new licensees for Mike the Knight are: Akroyd and TDP (nightwear and underwear); Blues (outerwear); Trade Mark Collections (bags and luggage); VMC (dress up and accessories); William Lamb (footwear); Shreds (bags and aprons); and Roy Lowe (socks).

Skyreader Media, a division of Skywriter Media Entertainment Group, officially releases its first two eBook apps, Robo Buddy and Coyote’s Tale, this week.  Both titles are available for the iPad at the App Store.  Both new eBook titles includes a Notes for Literacy Learning section, which helps parents help their kids improve their reading skills and comprehension, as well as other features.  Both titles are based on print books published by Rubicon Publishing.

DHX Media announces the releases of Rastamouse  – The Album (Makin’ A Bad Ting Good) featuring Rastamouse & Da Easy Crew on July 4, 2011 in the UK, where the series can be seen on CBeebies and BBC 2.  A Rastamouse single, Hot Hot Hot, will be released on June 26, following Rastamouse & Da Easy Crew’s live performance at the 2011 Glastonbury Festival.  The series, which features music, is based on the books by Michael De Souza and Genevieve Webster. 

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Cake promotes Leila Ouledcheikh to VP/International Sales.  Ouledcheikh will oversee worldwide merchandising and licensing sales as well as TV and home video sales across Germany, France, Italy, Benelux, the Middle East, Africa, Greece and Turkey.  She will also help identify new business opportunities to grow Cake’s distribution, as well as work on development strategies for international brand building and co-production projects.  Prior to joining Cake in 2009, Ouledcheikh was with Entertainment Rights and Hit Entertainment.
