Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 22, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Digital Domain Media Group (DDMG), a digital production company, moves into the Middle East under a new collaboration with twofour54, the Abu Dhabi government-backed media and entertainment initiative, which will see the creation of an animation, visual effects and motion capture studio and Digital Domain Institute media school in Abu Dhabi. The new partnership is designed to develop and grow the local film, TV and media production industry and local talent in the Middle East at the Cannes Film Festival, and has already begun hiring staff – over time expected to employ some 500 people. DDMG will begin production of visual effects and animation in studios in twofour54 at the beginning of 2013, and will develop a purpose-built 150,000 square foot state-of-the-art entertainment production complex, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2015. The new Digital Domain studio will create animated feature films, produce visual and 3D effects, engage in the production of original Middle Eastern-branded entertainment for audiences worldwide and contribute to international productions. The studio will become part of Digital Domain’s global feature film VFX and animation pipeline, connected to its studios in LA, Vancouver, San Francisco, London, Florida and Mumbai. The Digital Domain Institute/Abu Dhabi, modeled after the Digital Domain Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida, will train students in the skills of digital media production for entertainment, simulation and related applications. Classes at the Digital Domain Institute/Abu Dhabi are scheduled to begin early in 2014. Twofour54 has also announced that the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is set to offer the production incentive of a 30% tax rebate for film, TV and commercial media projects starting this fall 2012. Digital Domain has worked on animation and/or VFX for a wide range of projects, including Titanic, the Transformers series, Real Steel and Tron: Legacy, and perhaps most notably for creating the hologram of Tupac Shakur featured at the Coachella music festival in April 2012.

LICENSING

Interscope Records will release the soundtrack album for DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s upcoming animated feature film Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.  The soundtrack features Katy Perry’s hit Firework and Australia’s Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP’s popular dance song We No Speak Americano, and of course themes by composer Hans Zimmer – who has scored 100+ movies, such as Madagascar franchise, The Lion King, The Dark Knight, and Inception. The Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted soundtrack album also features producer-songwriter Peter Asher’s Love Always Comes As a Surprise, Frances McDormand (who voices the French animal control officer in the new movie) pays tribute to Edith Piaf with a new take on the classic Non, je ne regrette rien (No, I have no regrets), and Madagascar’s King Julien covers C + C Music Factory’s Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now), Spice Girls’ Wannabe, and Nelly’s Hot In Herre, and collaborates with Marty (voiced by Chris Rock) for the album’s closing mash-up of Afro Circus and Reel 2 Real’s I Like To Move It for new track Afro Circus/I Like To Move It. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Animation SKG’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (www.madagascarmovie.com) opens Friday, June 8, 2012, in 2D and 3D.

Kidz Entertainment signs a non-exclusive license deal with New York’s PAW-TV (Pet Adoption World Television), to jointly develop PAW-TV named products. The new products will be designed to showcase bolster animal adoption awareness. Additionally, Kidz Entertainment products will be featured on the PAW-TV network and a portion of the sales will be donated to the PAW TV foundation.

Cartoon Network unveils plans for its third annual Move It Movement Tour (www.moveitmovement.com), a summer campaign targeting kids/tweens 6-14, in partnership with the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition and in support of First Lady Michelle Obama‘s Let’s Move! initiative. The 17-market tour kicks off June 10, 2012 in Atlanta and will then make its way around the US through August 12, stopping at family-centric locations and sponsored by local cable affiliates. The Move It Movement Tour will feature a variety of activity and learning stations, incorporating other core partner organizations including the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), NBA/WNBA FIT & NBA Hoop Troop, NFL PLAY 60 and The PGA of America, as well as a Cartoon Network Chill zone – where folks can get water, sample the network’s content and other activities. Additionally, two new national PSAs, one featuring Michelle Obama focusing on how kids can get further involved with Let’s Move! and the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA+) program, will premiere on Sunday, May 28, on Cartoon Network, CartoonNetwork.com, the partner’s websites and Cartoon Network’s Facebook page. Joining Cartoon Network again as an official sponsor of the 2012 tour is Crayola.

Nick at Nite will launch its new original primetime drama Hollywood Heights (80×60) on Monday, June 18, at 9p. The series, which is based on hugely popular Mexican telenovela Alcanzar una Estrella, revolves around a teen girl whose life changes drastically when she becomes a star and gains the love of her rock star idol. The first season of Hollywood Heights is co-produced with Televisa (Mexico) in association with Sony Pictures Television. Nick at Nite will air episodes of the series weeknights at 9p through October 2012. In support of the new series, on May 30, NickatNite.com will launch its Hollywood Heights show site, which will feature a section that focuses on the Hollywood Heights characters. Following the series launch, the site will showcase series highlights with teasers for upcoming episodes, and recaps of the show’s best moments. Beginning June 1, the first episode of Hollywood Heights will be available for streaming on NickatNite.com, Facebook (facebook.com/hollywoodheightstv), and Nick@Nite On Demand. The first episode will be available for free on iTunes beginning June 4. Additionally, the first five episodes of Hollywood Heights will be available for free download on iTunes, and streaming on Nick@Nite On Demand prior to its June 18 premiere. Hollywood Heights stars Brittany Underwood (One Life to Live), Melissa Ordway (17 Again), Cody Longo (Fame), Jama Williamson (Parks and Recreation), Carlos Ponce (Couples Retreat, singer) and Justin Wilczynski (Kaya), and will also feature James Franco in a multi-episode story arc. The series is executive produced by Jill Farren Phelps (General Hospital, One Life to Live) and co-executive produced by Hisham Abed (The Hills and The City) and Josh Griffith (Young and the Restless, As the World Turns) who also serves as head writer.

Disney Channel will offer a sneak peek at its new animated comedy, Gravity Falls, on Friday, June 15, 9:55p, and the episode will also be available via iTunes. Gravity Falls will then premiere on the network on Friday, June 29 at 9:30p, preceded by an encore of the preview episode at 9p. Produced by Disney Television Animation, Gravity Falls is created/executive produced by Alex Hirsch (Fish Hooks, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack) and is inspired by his real adventure with his twin sister. The voice cast for the series features Jason Ritter (Parenthood) and Kristen Schaal (Toy Story 3, 30 Rock), as well as Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks) and Hirsch. Guest stars will include Jennifer Coolidge, Will Forte, Alfred Molina, Lance Bass, Coolio and Larry King. Further promotional support for the launch of Gravity Falls includes: DisneyChannel.com will launch the new series-based game Mystery Shack Mystery on May 25, 2012; the series premiere will be available on Disney Channel SVOD on Friday, June 22; and a new Gravity Falls game, Mystery Tour Ride, debuts on DisneyChannel.com June 29.

The Hub will premiere the new action/fantasy animated series Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 8:30p. Earlier in the day, Actor Scott Wolf (Party of Five, V), who stars in the series, will host a preview screening of the new series at the first annual ATX Television Festival (June 1-3), in Austin, Texas, the morning of Saturday, June 2, 2012. Wolf will discuss the show’s central anti-bullying theme. Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters, the newest franchise from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, also features the voice talents of Freddy Rodriguez (Ugly Betty, Six Feet Under), John DiMaggio (Pound Puppies, Futurama), Oded Fehr (The Mummy) and Phil LaMarr (MADtv).

Nickelodeon looks at what it means to be an Asian Pacific American in the Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, Who Am I? Asian Pacific American, and Proud!, debuting Sunday, May 27, at 9p. The special, which coincides with the annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, addresses the stereotypes and discriminations associated with being an Asian Pacific American — like that they are all good at math and are bad a sports. Actors George Takei (Star Trek), Aziz Ansari (Parks and Recreation) and Ashley Argota (Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures) join in the discussion and speak about their specific experiences.

The third season of Disney XD‘s series Pair of Kings is set to premiere Monday, June 18 at 8:30p. The new season introduces welcomes Adam Hicks (Zeke and Luther, Lemonade Mouth) as a new cast member playing the role of Boomer’s long, lost triplet brother, Boz, and will also feature guest appearances by Hayley Hasselhoff (Huge), Karan Brar (Jessie) and Mike “The Miz” Mizanin (WWF Raw, WWE Smackdown!), among others. From Friday, June 8, DisneyXD.com will launch the new Pair of Kings game called Pyramid of Puzzles, which allows players to control both Boomer and Boz as they make their way through a several levels of a giant pyramid maze to rescue Mason – while using their brains to get through each level and fending off enemies. Created and executive produced by Dan Cross and Dave Hoge, and executive produced by Matt Wickline, Pair of Kings is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.
