Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Elephant Eye Theatrical, a new Broadway development/production company, is developing Charles Addams’ famous Addams Family illustrations for the Great White Way, as a musical no less.  Currently slated to debut for the 2009-2001 Broadway season, the book for The Addams Family musical is being penned by Jersey Boys author’s Marshall Brickman (he also co-wrote Sleeper and Annie Hall to name a few) and Rick Elice, with a score by Andrew Lippa (Wild Party).  It is a pretty safe guess that the show won’t feature the theme song to the 1960s TV show that many know so well (“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, The Addams Family …), nor the kid’s version (The Addams Family started when Uncle Fester … let’s leave that one right there), however I do see a great production number around Lurch and “You rang?”  The rights to create a Broadway musical based on the property were granted by The Charles and Tee Addams Foundation.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marathon Animation is developing its animated series Totally Spies as a feature film, per Variety.  Marathon is in Cannes looking for partners for the picture, which already has a script.  The series, which is now in production on a fifth cycle, currently airs on Cartoon Network here in the US, and on various channels around the world.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Together again, Scholastic News and NBC News have teamed to cover the 2008 Presidential Election for classrooms nationwide, as they did for the election in 2004.  The Scholastic Kids Press Corps, students ages 10-14, will report on Election 2008 for Scholastic Classroom Magazines and Scholastic News Online for kids in grades 1-12.  Occasionally the kid reporters will appear on NBC News shows.  The students will also interview NBC journalists reporting on Election 2008 for articles that will be published on Scholastic News Online and in Scholastic’s classroom magazines.  So far the kid journalists have provided coverage from both the Democratic and Republican debates with Kids Debate ’08, which took place during the debates (and will be conducted for future debates), featured online chats for students nationwide and invited them to participate in polls and suggest questions for the reporters to ask the candidates.

4Kids TV on demand channel will be available to Bresnan Communications subscribers from July 2007.  4Kids TV on demand, which launched in August 2007, is currently available in 13.5 million HH recently launched on Cox Communications and through subscriber upgrades on Comcast digital cable.  This June 2007, 4Kids TV on demand will celebrate Father’s Day with TMNT: My Dad Is A Rat, a series of five episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that focus on Splinter, the teacher and father figure of the show.

FremantleMedia heads to the DISCOP 2007 market in Budapest next month with a range of narrative series. Among the narrative programs is the teen-targeted series The Best Years (13×60′) from Blueprint Entertainment, and produced in association with The N and CanWest MediaWorks’ Global Television.  Created and executive produced by Aaron Martin, writer/show runner on Degrassi: The Next Generation, The Best Years follows a group of friends as they make their way through the ups and downs of college life.

MARKETING/LICENSING

What Time Is It, the first song from the upcoming Disney Channel Original Movie, High School Musical 2 (HSM 2), will premiere on Radio Disney this Friday, May 25 at 8a.  Written by Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, the new song will air throughout the day on Radio Disney.  Walt Disney Records will release What Time Is It as a single on CD this July 17, with the full soundtrack to HSM 2 available from August 14, 2007, three days prior to the premiere of HSM 2 on Disney Channel.

Cartoon Network says it is extending Big Fat Awesome House Party, the Foster’s Home for imaginary Friends interactive online game, for an additional six months due to its popularity.  Launched on CartoonNetwork.com in May 2006, Big Fat Awesome Party was initially slated to run for a year.  In addition to remaining up and running until November 2007, the game will feature six new areas, games and purchasing power.  The game currently has 13 million registered users.

Atari, Inc. has put Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 into development for Wii and PlayStation 2.  The new Dragon Ball Z game will feature “extreme” 3D fighting, some 150 characters (more characters than before), new more realistic effects and 20+ battle stages.  The game has improved control system for the Wii, which will let players mimic moves and attacks like the ones shown in the Dragon Ball Z animated series.  Slated for a holiday 2007 release, by Namco Bandai Games Inc./Spike is developing Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

STONE SOUP

The Royal Mail, Britain’s postal service, will issue a new set of Harry Potter stamps on July 17, 2007, just prior to the July 21 release of J.K. Rowling’s final Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Disney Channel US adds one and ups two to its Marketing and Creative team.  All three will report to Richard Loomis, SVP/Marketing and Creative.

  • Frank Keating is named VP/Marketing. He is responsible for all off-channel marketing initiatives for Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney, Toon Disney and Jetix brands.  Prior to joining Disney Channel, Keating was VP/Marketing, Warner Bros. Worldwide Television. 
  • Ron Pomerantz has been upped to VP/Creative Director for Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney and ABC Kids.  Most recently Executive Creative Director for the channel, Pomerantz is now responsible for the creative direction and on-air promotions and branding.
  • Veronica Davidson moves up to VP/On-Air Promotions, Production.  She will oversee on-air and graphic promotional content produced for Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney, Toon Disney and Jetix across multiple platforms.  Most recently she was Executive Director/On-Air Promotions, Production.

Disney has also appointed Paul Candland as Managing Director, Disney Japan Ltd.  Candland, who will take up his new responsibilities as of June 1, 2007, will be responsible for the company’s local strategy development, new business initiatives, and local brand marketing in Japan.  He will also maintain his current posts and responsibilities as Managing Director, Disney ABC International Television and Disney Channel.  Candland joined Disney Japan about a decade ago, beginning as GM, Disney Store chain.  He was previously President, Okinawa Pepsi-Cola.
