Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
2010 Upfront: The Hub, the new joint venture network between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, joins the upfront season as preparations continue for its October 10, 2010 launch. Margaret Loesch, President and CEO, The Hub, unveiled a portion of the programming, including six original series and seven US series premieres featured on the network. These series will be broken down into four demo specific programming blocks:
- Preschool (K2-5; 9a-1p);
- Kids Afternoon/Kids Prime (K6-12; 1-6p);
- Family Prime Access (6-7p); and
- Family Prime (7-11p).
Further original and acquired programming information and programming lineup launch schedule will be announced later. Here are The Hub’s original series and acquired series (including US debuts), thus far:
The Hub Original Series:
- Dan Vs. – the animated series revolves around Dan, a loveable loner, and Chris, his reluctant sidekick, as they strike out against the frustrations modern life has put upon him (real or imagined). Produced by Film Roman, a unit of Starz Media Company, in association with The Hatchery
- Family Game Night – an hour-long, live-action game show series featuring kids and adults playing a range of classic Hasbro strategy games, such as Cranium, Bop-It, and Connect4. Produced by Hasbro Studios.
- G.I. Joe Renegades – an animated action/adventure G.I. Joe origins series. The show follows the G.I. Joe team as it develops and goes up against their nemesis, the Cobra organization. Produced by Hasbro Studios.
- Pound Puppies – Set in Shelter 17, the series follows a team of dogs and their mission to find a home for every puppy. “A pup for every person and a person for every pup.” Produced by Hasbro Studios.
- R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour – a scary-themed half-hour, live-action anthology series based on/inspired by kid horror author R.L. Stine. Produced by The Hatchery.
- The 99 – the animated series is an adaptation of the eponymous comic book that follows the adventures of superheroes from 99 countries that work together to maximize their powers and foster peace. Created by Dr. Naif al-Mutawa, a Middle East scholar/clinical psychologist, each member of The 99 embodies one of 99 positive values (e.g. wisdom, mercy, and strength). Produced by Teshkeel Media & Endemol Digital UK Production Group.
Acquired programming:
- US Premieres include: Animal Mechanicals (preschool, 52×11) produced by Halifax Film; the CGI animated Cosmic Quantum Ray produced by Moonscoop Entertainment; Deltora Quest (52 episodes) a CGI animated series produced by Dentsu; Maryoku Yummy (preschool) – animated series produced by American Greetings Properties and DQ Entertainment in association with Telegael Media; Strawberry Shortcake (26 episodes) – the new CGI animated series produced by American Greetings Properties; The WotWots (preschool) – the puppet series comes from Weta Workshop and is produced by Pukeko Pictures; and Twisted Whiskers – a CGI animated series produced by American Greetings Properties, and co-producers DQ Entertainment and Moonscoop.
- Other Programming: Fraggle Rock – produced by The Him Henson Company; Meerkat Manor – produced by Oxford Scientific Films; and Family Movie Night – which will offer family-targeted movies (titles TBA).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Bill Cosby and Jell-O are back together again for a new multi-million dollar ad campaign, Hello Jell-O. The campaign will feature a brand new Jell-O logo across all media. The deal will see Cosby executive produce a new spot featuring the best giggle in the US, a nationwide search for that role will be held in 22 cities this summer. Additionally, Jell-O will serve as the presenting sponsor of Cosby’s new weekly family-targeted online show, OBKB series of 10-minute webisodes featuring the Cosby interviewing kids (a la Kids Say the Darndest Things).
Litton Entertainment adds more station groups for its new original E/I (educational/information) series package produced exclusively for ABC Stations for September 2011. Signing on for the six, new half-hour original series are Belo, Bonten, Chambers Communications,Cordillera, Fisher, Gannett, Hubbard, Journal, Lin, News Post Gazette, Young and Weigel. These station groups join the previously announced ABC O&Os, Cox, McGraw-Hill, Newport and Post Newsweek. Litton’s original three-hour programming block, all shot in HD, includes the following series that are currently in development:
- Ocean Mysteries – follows ocean scientists and explorers as they adventure to remote parts of the globe as they unravel mysteries
- Earth: Angry Planet – the series explores sustainable developments (e.g. solar sail, wind power), as well as explain natural occurrences.
- Culture Click: the series looks at how the world is shrinking due to ever developing technology, as well as exploring how cultures are the same and different.
- Litton will continue to distribute its previous lineup of E/I programming, which includes Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild, and Animal Exploration with Jarod Miller, separately.
Zeke and Luther stars Adam Hicks (Luther) and Daniel Curtis Lee (Kojo) will perform and star in a rap-style version of the classic song and music video, In the Summertime, debuting on Disney XD on Saturday, May 29 at 8a. The music video, which features other DXD stars including Hutch Dano (Zeke), Dylan and Cole Sprouse (Suite Life on Deck), Mitchel Musso (Phineas and Ferb, pair of Kings), among others, will rotate through the channel’s summer schedule. The music video leads into a three-day holiday weekend marathon of series, including Zeke and Luther, Kick Buttowski-Suburban Daredevil, I’m in the Band and Phineas Ferb. In the Summertime was originally performed and released in 1970 by the band Mungo Jerry.
Sprout will celebrate Thomas & Friends 65th anniversary live on air on The Sunny Side Up Show on Friday, June 4, including a Thomas birthday card event. The weekend of June 5-6, Sprout will keep celebrating Thomas with a special broadcast of the Thomas & Friends movie, The Great Discovery. Sprout will also run special Thomas sweepstakes on SproutForParents.com ( www.sproutforparents.com).
Canada’s Family Channel gets into summer vacation mode with its first original TV movie, Vacation with Derek, based on the series Life with Derek, on Friday, June 25 at 8p. Commissioned by Family Channel and produced by Shaftesbury Films, Vacation with Derek stars Life with Derek’s Michael Seater and Ashley Leggat and is part of the network’s Bright Lights, Big Summer effort. Following the TV premiere, the TV movie will be available on Family.ca ( www.family.ca ). Additionally, Family OnDemand subscribers can watch the movie prior to the Family Channel debut, from Friday, June 18.
Playhouse Disney‘s Special Agent Oso will include a group of special guest stars when the second season of the series premieres Saturday, July 10, at 8a, on Disney Channel. The new season guest stars include Mel Brooks as snoring Grandpa Mel, Brad Garrett as the voice of inventor Buffo the water buffalo, and celebrated college football coach Lou Holtz as football-playing Uncle Lou, as well as Lisa Loeb, Rita Moreno, Ming-Na, Freddy Rodriguez and Rebecca Romijn. Produced by Disney Television Animation, new episodes of Special Agent Oso will debut every Saturday throughout July and August. The mixed-media animated series also airs daily during the preschool programming block.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Classic Media appoints indie kid’s publisher The Walker Group to create a new worldwide publishing program for the Where’s Waldo? books by Martin Handford. The first-ever Where’s Waldo? spin-off effort, the new publishing program will feature new material that will be released across various formats, all of which will be based on and complement Handford’s original designs. The Where’s Waldo? books, the first of which was published in 1987, have sold 50+ million copies, in 38 countries and 27 languages. The Walker Group is comprised of Walker Books UK, US-based Candlewick Press, and Walker Books Australia.
In other 65th anniversary plans, HIT Entertainment helps Thomas & Friends celebrates with several new US promotional partners, including Minor League Baseball (MiLB), Celebration Foods, and Six Flags Entertainment. Celebration Foods and the Carvel ice cream cake brand will serve as the presenting sponsor of Thomas’ 65th anniversary, which includes retail programs this spring/summer, as well as joining Thomas at MiLB games. Thomas & Friends title nights will take place with 22 MiLB teams between now and June 30, featuring a range of Thomas-themed activities and giveaways. As the exclusive sponsor of these events, Celebration Foods will offer Carvel ice cream cake samples and coupons at the games. Celebration will also feature free consumer offers at grocery retailers at select regional stores. Additionally, MiLB and its participating teams will feature Thomas & Friends on their websites. On June 6, Six Flags will host Thomas birthday parties, which will include activities, giveaways, and character visits, at its parks that feature Thomas Towns. Select parks will also showcase the new 2-disc anniversary DVD, Thomas & Friends: The Greatest Stories, from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Jeff Shapiro is named VP/Retail Business Development, CPLG US. A licensing industry veteran, Shapiro is based in Burbank and will report to Cindy Davis, SVP/Licensing, CPLG US. He will focus on promotion a range of brands and retail expansion for Cookie Jar Entertainment brands. Most recently, Shapiro was Head/Retail Business Development, Art Impressions. He previously served as VP/Retail Marketing, Twentieth Century Fox, and prior to that he was Executive Director/Retail Promotions, Sony Pictures Consumer Products.
RATINGS
Disney Channel‘s Friday, May 14 (8p) play of its series The Suite Life on Deck earned the series its best numbers since 2/26/10 among Total Viewers (3.6 million) and since 3/5/10 with K6-11 (1.5 million).
