Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 17, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) launches Nick Jr. and MTVN HD in Asia. Both VIMN 24-hour channels will be available on StarHub (Singapore) beginning this week, and Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s HyppTV (Malaysia) from June 1, 2011. The cross-platform deal includes the broadcast of Nick Jr. and VOD programs. The Nick Jr. programming line-up will feature Dora The Explorer, Go, Diego, Go!, Little Bill, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, Blue’s Clues, Wonder Pets!, Team Umizoomi, Bubble Guppies, Fifi and the Flower Tots, and Max & Ruby, among others.
Disney XD will launch its new martial arts-themed comedy series Kickin’ It on Monday, June 13 at 8:30p. The evening will also include the premiere of season two of Pair of Kings (8p) and a new episode of I’m in the Band (9p). DXD will also feature Kickin’ It that week with new episodes Tuesday-Thursday, May 14-16 at 8:30p. Also on Kickin’ It premiere nights, the network will air the interstitial series Martial Arts Boot Camp, which features a behind the scenes look at the karate training for martial artist and series star Leo Howard and the Kickin’ It cast. Immediately following the premiere on-air, the premiere episodes and a brand new episode of Pair of Kings and Kickin’ It will be available exclusively on DisneyXD.com/Premieres (www.disneyxd.com/premieres). Further multiplatform support for Kickin’ It includes:
- May 24 – DisneyXD.com will debut a show page and new game, Dojo Dodge.
- May 31 – Kickin’ It series premiere will be available as a free preview on iTunes
- June 7 – DisneyXD.com launches an interactive video activity where kids can learn martial arts moves demonstrated by the cast, another new game, Hollywood Rumble, which is based on Kickin’ It.
- June 14 – the series premiere debuts on Disney XD on Demand available via AT&T, Charter, Cox, Time Warner and Verizon; Disney XD Mobile VOD available via AT&T U-Verse, MobiTV, Sprint and Verizon; along with Xbox Live and Sony Playstation.
Disney Channel will air the sketch comedy So Random!, originally featured as a show within the network’s series Sonny With A Chance, on Sunday, June 5 at 8:30p. Each episode of the series, which features sketch parodies of pop culture and daily life, will showcase a performance by a special guest or recording artist. A production of Varsity Pictures and It’s A Laugh Productions, So Random! is executive-produced by Steve Marmel, Michael Feldman, Brian Robbins and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett.
France is getting the mixed live action/CGI series Artzooka!, as CCI Entertainment enters into a deal to produce a new localized version of the series in association with France Televisions. The French version of Artzooka! will be hosted by Mark Antoine and is slated to launch in fall 2011 on terrestrial broadcaster France 5. This is the fifth localized version of the series. The deal with France Televisions includes the rights to Artzooka!’s interactive website, which furthers the art experience featured in the series and allows kids to download art instructions, play a series of art-inspired games and showcase their creations. Local marketing plans are underway and will include interactive live events and a full consumer products line based on the series.
DHX Media gets a third season pick-up for its tween targeted live-action sketch comedy series That’s So Weird from YTV (Canada). The new season is comprised of 13 new episodes for a series total of 39 episodes. The ensemble series also airs on Boomerang Latin America and on Nickelodeon in Australia and New Zealand and Canal Panda in Portugal.
PBS Kids aims to support kids and families bridge the summer reading slump by featuring 10 weeks of educational on-air programming beginning this month, as well as featuring educational content, games and tools for free via PBSParents.org/read ( www.pbsparents.org/read ) and PBSKids.org ( www.pbskids.org ). Families can find educational apps at PBSKids.org/mobile ( www.pbskids.org/mobile ). Additionally, PBS Kids and partners will host summer reading support activities including, The iVillage PBS Kids Summer Reading Community Challenge (June 6-July 15), and Soar with Reading, a joint project of PBS Kids and JetBlue (June), which encourages kids’ imaginations through reading. The on-air component of the summer bridge initiative will feature reading-related episodes from a different PBS Kids series:

Entertainment One Family (eOne Family) completes a raft of new international broadcast deals, renewals and in-flight sales for its kid’s portfolio on the heels of MIPTV.
- The preschool series Peppa Pig has been picked up by WDR (Germany), RTV (Slovenia), TV Catalunya and RTE in Ireland. WDR and RTV have also picked up season three. Renewals for Peppa Pig include Nick Jr (UK), YLE (Finland), TV Works (New Zealand), and ABC Australia, with TV Works and ABC also renewing season two.
- Dexy signs on to handle broadcast and DVD rights for the preschool series Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom across Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia. The series is also set to begin airing on RTE (Ireland) and S4C (Wales).
- The animated preschool series Tractor Tom will premiere in Gaelic on TG4 (Ireland), Humf will re-launch on BBC Kids (Canada), and will also air on S4C (Wales).
- Lost and Found, a 30-minute animated special has been acquired by Al Jazeera (Middle East), TPBS (Thailand) and RTSR (Switzerland).
- Additionally, eOne Family inks in-flight deals for Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom and Tractor Tom, which will feature episodes of the series on Emirates airline and Air Mauritius flights.
Paramount Home Entertainment, Nickelodeon and Shout! Factory ink a sub-licensing deal giving Shout! Factory rights to distribute DVD and Blu-ray releases of some of Nick’s classic animated programs, including The Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold, Danny Phantom, Aaaah! Real Monsters, and Rocko’s Modern Life in the US and Canada. The first title to be released will under the new pact is The Wild Thornberrys: Season One, which includes 20-episodes in a collectible 4-DVD box set, debuts at retail today. Produced by Klasky-Csupo for Nickelodeon, The Wild Thornberrys features the voices of Lacey Chabert, Tim Curry and Flea (The Red Hot Chili Peppers). The DVD supports Nickelodeon’s plan to showcase its classic shows that also includes a new TeenNick nighttime programming block, The ’90s Are All That!, which debuts this fall 2011.
Canada’s Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group, an indie content producer and distributor, launches its new interactive eReading platform, Skyreader Media Inc. Skyreader ( www.skywritermedia.com/skyreader ) will publish kid-targeted interactive eBook apps for the iPad and other tablet devices, focusing on titles for all reading levels. The initial eBook app titles for the Skyreader launch will include (features and pricing TBD): Robo Buddy (K5-9); Coyote’sTale (K5-9); Banana Ninja (K9-13); Mars Colony (K9-13).
Space Enterprises is appointed as licensing agent for Sooty and Sweep, the most recent TV series featuring the popular puppets Sooty, Sweep and Soo (Sooty was first introduced 60+ years ago), which is set to air in the UK later this year. Commissioned by ITV, the series will air weekdays on its digital channel CiTV from September 2011, before running on ITV Breakfast (ITV1) on weekend mornings beginning 2012. The new series follows the adventures of Sooty, Sweep and Soo as they join their long-suffering friend Richard when he takes a job as a handyman at a coastal holiday park.
Bazooka Candy Brands teams with Hasbro for a multi-platform merchandising program the new 3D feature film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which will include unique in-store multi-brand display featuring a 3D graphic of Optimus Prime. Additionally, Bazooka Candy Brands will launch its custom online movie-based multi-level game (with an option to play with 3D glasses) at Candymania.com ( www.candymania.com ). The candy Transformer movie tie-in will feature limited edition products in its Ring Pop, Juicy Drop Pop, Baby Bottle Pop, and Jumbo Push Pop lines. The limited edition Transformers movie-themed Baby Bottle Pop will feature color-changing candy powder. Distribution of the merchandising units includes major grocery, drug, and convenience chains, and an exclusive display unit will be featured at CVS. The merchandising program will be supported by a TV campaign. Paramount will release Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 3D on July 1, 2011.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products UK signs four more partners for the ThunderCats licensing program, which launches in late 2011: MV Sports (wheeled toys including scooters); Rubies (dress-up line for kids and adults featuring characters from the series); Character World (bedding); and Panini (publishing plans include the first ThunderCats magazine). These new licensees joins Bandai and its ThunderCats line what will include 4 inch basic action figures, 8 inch classic collector figures, a Deluxe ThunderTank Vehicle with Figure, Deluxe Roleplay Sword, Staction PVC Figurines and collectable Limited Edition Porcelain Statues. The new ThunderCats TV series will premiere in the UK in Q3 2011, following the exclusive series launch on Cartoon Network in August 2011. The series is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation and Japan’s Studio4C.

Target Entertainment names Lindsay Pearl as Director/Licensing and Children’s Acquisitions in London. Pearl, who joins Target in June, be responsible for acquiring new kid-centric content and also heading up the licensing and merchandising division, including Sony Playstation portfolio, while also developing a right exploitation strategies for Target’s brands across all platforms and media. Pearl was recently with Hasbro where she served as Director/International Acquisitions and Licensing. Prior to that she was with Cartoon Network as Territory Manager/Central Easter Europe, Turkey and Greece and Hit Entertainment as Director/Business Development EMEA.
Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing promotes Lydia Finn to Associate Publicist. Finn, who joined the company in spring 2010, had been a Publicity Assistant.
