Today’s Upfront presentations

: ABC with expected announcements including moving permanently Grey’s Anatomy to either Monday or perhaps even on Thursdays, at 9p or 10p.  Also scheduled for today, MyNetwork TV.

Meanwhile, CBS is scheduled to present on Wednesday, and among their expected announcements are the pickup of several new shows including Shark with James Woods, Jericho with Skeet Ulrich, Smith with Ray Liotta and an as yet untitled drama series starring Stanley Tucci as a brilliant but troubled surgeon (does anybody do brilliant but troubled better than Tucci?), and Waterfront with Les Moonves’ favorite actor Joe Pantoliano. Freshman series from this season expected to get the green light for next year are The Unit and The New Adventures of Old Christine.  And Kevin James spilled the beans on Howard Stern yesterday that his show has been picked up for another season.

Sony Pictures Television has cleared The Greg Behrendt Show on Superstation WGN to kick off in syndication this fall.  Additionally, WGN will have the exclusive cable rights.
 
In June, the Independent Film Channel (IFC) will launch a new half-hour show called Media Lab Uploaded. This show is an expanded version of IFC’s integrated program, IFC Media Lab, which offers filmmakers a place to post their independent films online. Viewers vote on their favorites, and the best air on the network. Media Lab Uploaded will feature film shorts that are unfiltered, uncensored and uncut assembled into a monthly show hosted by IFC NEWS Anchor, Matt Singer.
 
VDC Corporation has added four channels to its network line-up. VDC subscribers using Microsoft Windows-powered smart phones and PDAs will now have access to Discovery Channel, TLC, Travel Channel and BBC America as part of the standard subscription package which includes 15+ networks for $11.95 available at www.vdc.com.
 
ABC has rescheduled Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball to air next Monday, May 22, at 8p, due to the President’s live address last night.
 
BBC America has a number of new and returning shows debuting for its U.S. audience this summer. New and returning dramas include:

  • Shakespeare Retold –  Modern versions of four plays – Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, and Taming of the Shrew – airing each Sunday at 7p beginning August 6.
  • Footballers Wive$: Overtime – Spinoff of original series with 30 new half-hour episodes, which will introduce a new roster of players, action and cliff-hangers to resolve from season four. Premieres August 6 at 10p.
  • Mile High – Season two of the racy drama about the lives and love interests of young flight attendants, will premiere August 6 at 1030p.
  • Murder City – Amanda Donahoe stars as a tough detective in a busy city murder squad who, along with her partner solves gritty crimes that put their lives in danger. Premieres August 17 at 9p.
  • Sharpe – Each Saturday night viewers will be immersed in a two-hour costume drama with this epic romantic war saga about the victories and loves of Napoleonic war hero, Richard Sharpe. The series begins August 5 at 9p with Sharpe’s Mission, followed by Sharpe’s Revenge, Sharpe’s Justice and Sharpe’s Waterloo.
  • Crimefighters – This reality show follows British police officers on foot chases and thru neighborhoods infested with drugs and prostitution. Premieres August 17 at 1030p.

New comedy scheduled:

  • Love Soup – A six-part comedy where two people who would be perfect for each other never meet. Premieres August 1 at 10p.
  • Jack Dee: Live at the Apollo – Each week comedian Jack Dee welcomes a different celebrity comedian at London’s Hammersmith Apollo Theatre. Premieres in The Underground on August 4 at 11p.
  • The World Stands Up – Four comedians present fresh stand-up comedy. Premieres in The Underground on August 4 at midnight.

Returning comedy series include The Kumars at No. 42 and The Worst Week of My Life.

MyNetworkTV has added 10 new affiliates to its station line-up, taking its U.S. clearances to nearly 82% of the country in 139 markets. The new affiliates include: WRLH/Richmond-Petersburg WGMU-CA/Burlington-Plattsburgh KOLN-DT/KGIN-DT/Lincoln WBTW-DT/Myrtle Beach-Florence KCPM/Fargo-Valley City WGXA-DT/Macon KAPP-DT-KVEW-DT/Yakima KUPT/Lubbock WOHL/Lima WAHU-DT/Charlottesville.

Once again, OLN will give viewers daily, spoke-to-spoke coverage of the 23-day Tour de France beginning July 1 at 8a. From the Alps to Paris’ Champs Elysées, OLN will broadcast more than 300 hours of the competitive cycling event with daily coverage to include a pre-race show followed by live coverage from 830-1130a. Each day’s race coverage will then be replayed four times daily including a primetime airing at 8p. During some of the race phases, OLN will expand the coverage to start at 630a. In addition, OLNTV.com is the official Tour de France web site in the U.S. for the fifth consecutive year, giving fans 24-hour access to race footage, daily reports, and a new interactive “Fan Zone” for cycling enthusiasts.

UPFRONT 2006:  NBC

Along with is fall primetime schedule, NBC made four other announcements. 

  • On the digital front, NBC will launch TV 360 on its 2006-07 Fall schedule with original content to include interactive TV and webisodes built around the network’s new programming.
  • NBC will debut a new broadband comedy channel called DOTCOMEDY.com, featuring everything from classic comedy TV shows to viral videos to late-night programming content from SNL, The Tonight Show, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. DOTCOMEDY.com will also have blogs, podcasts and mash-ups.
  • NBC Universal will introduce a FIRSTLOOK.com franchise for each of its online properties called NBCFIRSTLOOK.com, USAFIRSTLOOK.com, BRAVOFIRSTLOOK.com, SCIFIFIRSTLOOK.com and so on. Each site will premiere up to four episodes of the respective network’s series in full each year, prior to air on the network.
  • NBCU has also acquired iVillage which will team with NBC News’ Today show to offer a different women each month a chance to get a makeover on Today. The first one of this will happen this morning. 

NBC has ordered up six new drama series:

  • Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip – Emmy Award-winning executive producer-writer Aaron Sorkin and Emmy Award-winning executive producer-director Thomas Schlamme both from The West Wing, return to TV with this dramatic take behind the humor of producing a late-night comedy sketch show that stars Amanda Peet, Matthew Perry, Bradley Whitford among others. Produced by Warner Bros. Television.
  • Heroes – In this epic drama, after his father disappears, a genetics professor discovers there are people out there with super powers: a young dreamer who can fly; a high school cheerleader who is indestructible; a prison inmate who wakes up to find himself on the outside of his cell; plus other extraordinary tales. All discover their ultimate destiny is to save the world. Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio.
  • Kidnapped – Everyone is suspect in this serialized thriller in which a teenage son of a wealthy New York City family is kidnapped. The ensemble cast includes Jeremy Sisto, Delroy Lindo, Dana Delany, and Timothy Hutton among others. Produced by Sony Pictures Television and 25C Productions.
  • The Black Donnellys – This gritty crime drama is based loosely on the life of creator Bobby Moresco and follows four young, working-class Irish brothers and their involvement in New York City organized crime. . Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio in association with Blackfriars Bridge Productions.
  • Raines – Blending noir storytelling with humor, this police drama follows an eccentric LAPD detective Michael Raines who has the ability to have conversations with deceased crime victims. . Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio, this show will be scheduled on Sunday nights in January following the football season.
  • Friday Night Lights – Based on the film and starring Kyle Chandler as the coach of the local high school football team in a town where football is everything.

And two new comedy series for the fall:

  • 20 Good Years – Starring John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor about two mismatched New York buddies who realize they have about 20 years left to enjoy life with no regrets. . Produced by Warner Bros. Television.
  • 30 Rock – Emmy Award winner Tina Fey writes, executive produces and stars in this workplace comedy about backstage at a frenetic TV variety show. Tina stars as Liz Lemon, a single comedy writer in New York City, living the dream life until she meets the brash new network president played by Alec Baldwin. The show also stars Tracy Morgan among others. . Produced by Broadway Video Television and NBC Universal Television Studio.

Additional comedies on the bench:

  • Andy Barker, P.I. – Andy Richter re-teams with co-writer and executive producer Conan O’Brien. Richter portrays an earnest CPA, Andy Barker, who until his accounting business fails has succeeded at everything. When he’s mistaken for the retired private detective who used to occupy his office, he takes the case and has a sudden boost of new-found confidence and proves to be a problem-solver. Produced by NBC Universal Television Studio and Conaco.
  • The Singles Table – A group of five witty, single strangers meet at a wedding reception and decide to become good friends and maybe more than that in some cases. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

Primetime Sports:

  • Sunday Night Football – The NFL returns to NBC, hosted by Al Michaels and John Madden, with sideline and feature reporter Andrea Kremer. The 2006 NFL schedule kicks off on September 7 with the Pittsburgh Steelers hosting the Miami Dolphins.
  • Football Night in America –  NBC’s studio show hosted by Bob Costas with co-host Cris Collinsworth along with Jerome Bettis, Sterling Sharpe and Peter King.

ABC Radio Networks has appointed James Hunter Kelly as Country Producer for its ePrep morning prep services. Based in Nashville and working alongside the staff of American Country Countdown, Hunter will compile and manage all country music-related content for the ePrep subscription service going to radio morning shows across the country.
 
Davie-Brown Entertainment (DBE) has upped Melissa Fallon to VP/Television and Emerging Media, reporting to Tom Meyer, President. Based in Los Angeles, Melissa will supervise branded entertainment in television with an increased focus on multi-platform opportunities and content produced exclusively for emerging media platforms.
 
Joining ABC News in July will be Jan Crawford Greenburg as Correspondent based in the Washington, D.C. bureau. Coming from the Chicago Tribune, where she is the national legal affairs reporter, Jan is also the Supreme Court correspondent for The Newshour with Jim Lehrer on PBS and a legal analyst for CBS News. She is also writing a book on the Supreme Court for Penguin Press.
 
Patrick Reynolds has been named General Counsel for Bennett Productions, where he will oversee legal and business affairs for Bennett Productions and its sister company Bennett Media Worldwide.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: ABC conquered in the ratings Sunday night to win with 6.1/16 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS took over the second spot with 4.9/13, next came FOX 3.1/8, NBC 2.9/7, UNIV 1.4/4, WB 1.0/3 and TELE 0.3/1. At 7p, ABC with America’s Funniest Home Videos snuck ahead at 2.5/9; CBS’ 60 Minutes was a very close second at 2.5/8. The first hour of Survivor Panama’s Finale did best at 8p with 5.9/15, but at 9p ABC’s Desperate Housewives triumphed at 8.1/18. ABC kept the success going at 10p with Grey’s Anatomy in first place at 9.6/22.
