Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, May 15, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NBC Digital Entertainment will launch The Office 360 this fall, in addition to several interactive extensions built around its new fall schedule of shows. Viewers will be invited to create their own branches of the fictional Dunder-Mifflin Company of The Office and complete tasks online or via the show’s WAP site in hopes of influencing the linear show’s storyline. NBC.com will also debut web-exclusive soap Coastal Dreams this fall, as well as a host of new digital tie-ins for its new shows:

  • Lipstick Jungle – a fully editorialized online publication co-branded by NBC.com and iVillage.com, featuring fashion profiles, relationship advice, articles, quizzes and forums. 
  • Bionic Woman – “anatomy of a scene” feature will show the biggest scenes of the week are filmed using camera tricks, special effects and other production secrets.
  • Chuck – hotspots revealing top-secret government information and bonus video.
  • Journeyman – Users will be able to track Dan’s travel through time with an interactive online video timeline. Scene comparisons reveal how show producers recreate the authentic look of locations from earlier years.
  • Life – Fans will be able to further investigate Billy’s conspiracy wall, hidden in his home.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

ABC will begin streaming shows in HD on its branded video player on ABC.com in early July. The HD channel, streaming video in 1280 X 720 resolution, will initially feature episodes of series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty, before officially launching in September with a deeper line up of entertainment, national, and local news programming. The new HD-capable player will offer geo-targeting capabilities, allowing ads and content to be contoured and relevant to each user. Currently 80% of ABC’s affiliates have launched or committed to launch the player on their local websites, in exchange for one web avail per program.
 
Discovery Mobile will begin rolling out 14 made-for-mobile original series this month, continuing through fall of 2007. Discovery Mobile is currently available through Sprint, Amp’d Mobile, MobiTV, SmartVideo and Modeo. The new shows include What Are the Odds?, produced by Discovery Studios, exploring chance, probability and randomness. Earth Grooves features four-minute episodes of landscapes, the wild kingdom and underwater sea life, set to calming music. TLC’s Life Essentials (Label Entertainment) builds on the network’s Life Lessons campaign with 10 three-minute episodes providing tips on various topics facing 30-somethings. Hidden Garages (Cry Havoc Productions) offers a look inside the “Hidden Garages” of Mercedes Benz starting in June with each of the six four-minute episodes focusing on a particular car. Green Gadets will showcase several new gadgets and emerging technologies designed to make life easier and more eco-responsible. It debuts in third quarter.
 
TVGuide.com launched a microsite to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the upfront this year, featuring detailed descriptions of each new show, tons of links and blogs with commentary by Matt Roush, Steve Battaglio, and Michael Ausiello.
 
Yahoo!
issued a challenge to find the greenest city in America with a new program “Be a Better Planet” designed to encourage citizens to take action against climate change. The winning city will be rewarded with a fleet of new hybrid taxi cabs or the equivalent cash donation. The program coincides with the launch of the Yahoo! Green site, designed to be a comprehensive resource for environmentally-concerned consumers.
 
Westin Hotels partnered with Creative Artists Agency to launch an interactive website and in-room TV channel focused on “Lifestyle Renewal.” A “renewal council” of experts including trainer-to-the-stars David Kirsch and TV home makeover consultant Vern Yip was formed to program the site and channel, which will begin appearing in rooms in early 2008.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

mtvU and Cisco announced plans to license a new social networking application across MTV’s online properties developed as part of its Digital Incubator grant program. The Hit! or Sh!t player, as it’s called, was developed by Georgia Tech students David Jimison and Jeff Crouse to identify talent and build affinity groups based on how members rank and recommend clips. This year’s recipients will get as much as $30,000 in seed money and can submit a detailed business plan to pitch MTV and Cisco executives for an additional $100,000 to launch a new online business. This year’s greenlighted programs include:

Casablanca: social networking/mobile reality game from NYU
RapHappy: online hip-hop destination from NYU
Selctricty: online communal ranking technology from M.I.T.
Osiris: MP3 visualizer from Brown University that uses song lyrics and pulls images from Flickr to create videos

CBS Interactive
is in the process of acquiring WallStrip for $5 million, a Rocketboom-style financial vlog hosted by Lindsay Campbell. The digital division is also gearing up to announce several .com deals this week, according to The Wall Street Journal, including content sharing agreements with social networking sites Facebook, Last.fm Ltd and Slide Inc.
 
Next New Networks launched 7 new channels on Veoh.com, including Channel Federator, Fast Lane Daily, PulpSecret, ThreadBanger, Veracifier, VOD Cars and the new Indy Mogul Channel with the exclusive premiere of the new show “Backyard FX.”

Varsity Entertainment (“The Shop” on MTV), Totem and Taboo Productions are executive producing a web series for SIKids.com, the site for Sports Illustrated Kids magazine.  “BobbleCenter” spoofs the various sports reports on television, using BobbleHead dolls as anchors who throw to highlights also enacted by BobbleHeads.
 
Video Monitoring company ScanScout closed on $7 million in first round funding. The Cambridge, MA.-based company tracks and monitors spoken text, audio and video images online then selects appropriate ads to place below the video player.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Broadcaster.com has received a request by News Corp. to remove three videos in “The O.J. Simpsons” series using “The Simpsons” to parody “the Juice.” Broadcaster.com has so far refused, issuing a statement saying it believes If I Did It, Black and White Christmas and “Warzone are legal parodies and protected by fair use doctrine.

Entertainment and media marketer Source Interlink controlled by billionaire investor Ronald W. Burkle acquired Primedia’s Enthusiast Media unit for $1.2 billion in cash. Enthusiast contains over 70 magazine titles, 65 events, a TV show and 90 web sites including MotorTrend.com and Automotive.com.

Advanced Cable Communications selected EGT‘s QUARTET encoding systems for digital simulcast and digital program insertion (DPI) applications in their Coral Springs, Florida cable system.  Additionally, Advanced Cable Communications will utilize EGT’s ORCHESTRA Element Manager to monitor, manage and control their network.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Upfront deals will likely utilize both commercial and “live plus 3 days” ratings as their currency, according to MediaPost. WPP’s Group M was one of a group of buyers pushing to include both as a quid pro quo to allow advertisers to measure how many viewers are actually watching commercials and networks to get credit for time-shifted viewing. Last year deals were written only on “live” DVR viewing.
 
ABC
launched the “ABC Start Here” campaign, a multiplatform navigation branding initiative to help guide viewers across platforms and dayparts. The goal is to help audiences quickly identify ABC content via TV, online, mobile, DVD, iTunes, etc. and help exposes them to more they may not have been aware of. The branding initiative includes the call-to-action “ABC Start Here” tagline and a modular icon system tied to the ABC logo that will give visual cues to look for ABC content on multiple platforms. The new look debuts this summer during all dayparts.
 
Watchfire Digital Outdoor installed the first digital billboard in Oklahoma City. It is equipped with a high-speed Internet connection and can be updated remotely or programming to run specific messages coinciding with special events.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Forrester Research projects that paid video downloads will peak in 2007, generating $279 million this year, nearly triple last year’s amount. The research firm predicts future growth will instead come from online advertising sponsorships, advising that media companies plan for the shift accordingly. The ad-supported Adobe Media Player will hasten the transition, says Forrester. ABC is expected to be the first network to test the player next year.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

Interactive out-of-home advertising and entertainment media company Reactrix Systems, Inc. announced the appointment of Sue Danaher as President. Former EVP/GM of Ad Sales for MTV Networks, Sue will help grow the Reactrix Media Network, an interactive out-of-home ad solution that delivers ads in malls, theaters and other public places.


 

Associated Content has hired Tim Skillern as its News Director.  Skillern joins from RockyMountainNews.com, where he served as multimedia producer, reporter and videographer.  Prior, he was sports copy editor for The Boulder Daily Camera and internet producer for TheDailyCamera.com.

DTVAnswers.com is the official Web site of the National Association of Broadcasters’ digital television (DTV) transition campaign. Launched in January 2007, the DTV campaign’s mission is to ensure that no consumer is left unprepared, due to lack of information, for the February 17, 2009 federally mandated transition from analog to digital broadcasting. There are even links to other sites such as antennaweb.org, which tells you how to receive local digital broadcast channels in HD, over the air.
