On the eve of its upfront presentation, ABC announced it has picked up the drama pilot Life on Mars. The network also renewed Eli Stone for a sophomore season but will take a pass on October Road, Women’s Murder Club and Cashmere Mafia. Also not expected back next season are Cavemen, Carpoolers, Men in Trees and Big Shots. New to the ABC schedule, tho not to viewers – Scrubs off NBC. Also right before its upfront presentation scheduled for this evening, The CW, has renewed Reaper for a second season with 13 episodes for midseason. It is expected the network will place Reaper on Thursday nights with Supernatural after Smallville finishes its run. Other new projects expected on the CW fall schedule are Surviving the Filthy Rich and Stylista (mentioned here yesterday). Not returning – Aliens in America. In anticipation for its upfront show tomorrow after at Carnegie Hall, CBS ordered a handful of new shows:
FOX, prepping for its upfront on Thursday afternoon, is ready to roll on a new reality series from RDF USA called Secret Millionaire, reports THR. The premise involves a multimillionaire who lives among the poor for 10 days and discovers what it is like living on a small budget. In the end, the millionaire reveals his true identity and awards a $100,000 or more of his own money to deserving people. Six hour-long episodes have been ordered. In a deal that carries through 2014, Tennis Channel, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and ESPN will cover the US Open tennis event in a shared arrangement. ESPN and Tennis Channel will both have cable and new media tournament rights starting next year with more than 150 combined live hours. PorchLight Home Entertainment introduces a new distribution label – Ocean Park Home Entertainment – specializing in diverse and innovative independent films. The first two films scheduled for release under this new name are Pope Dreams and Outsourced. The new label joins PorchLight Home Entertainment representing children’s and family entertainment and PorchLight INSPIRE that distributes religious-based programming. In addition to bringing back Wedding SOS for season two on June 20 at 9p, as part of its Friday Fix It programming block, Fine Living Network launches four new series next month:
VH1 Classic, currently available in 55 million households, will debut two week-long video series this fall, each with 8-10 one hour episodes. VH1 Classic One Hit Wonders with host Carrie Keagan will look at the various single hit performances through all genres of music. And, VH1 Classic All Time Top 10 with host Mark Goodman will showcase the best videos of all time as voted on by viewers this summer via VH1Classic.com. Cablevision officially swooped in to acquire 97% of Newsday from Tribune in a deal valued at $650 million, including prepaid rent for leases of certain properties. Cablevision is looking at bundling TV, print and online advertising together and offering its 2.3 million Optimum Online customers Newsday-related content. Thirteen of the direct and indirect affiliates of Pappas Telecasting Companies filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The stations that filed include: KMPH and KFRE/Fresno-Visalia; KPTM and KXVO/Omaha; WCWG/Greensboro-Winston-Salem-Highpoint; KPTH and KMEG/Sioux City; KTNC/San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose; KAZH/Houston; KDBC/El Paso; KREN and KAZR/Reno; and KCWK/Yakima-Pasco-Richland-Kennewick. NTV based in Nebraska did not file for Chapter 11 protection. UPFRONT UPDATE: NBC While NBC announced their upfront info a few weeks back, they did host an non-upfront upfront party last evening at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. Attendees arrived at the party via the NBC Experience … a series of rooms or spaces dedicated to NBC’s global, mobile, online and multiplatform and multi-network content and capabilities, including Deal or No Deal, Top Chef, NBC Sports, Access Hollywood, HDTV, among others. While many attendees said they applaud NBC’s decision to do something completely different, most were a little confused at first with the multi-room walk-thru featuring almost an overload of colored lights, music and audio and video screens. And yet, once thru the maze of multimedia and into the party, many then went back to peruse the rooms a second time. The series will debut this summer after the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. The series will be produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions and Glassman Media. Megan Mullally will star with Alicia Silverstone in the ABC comedy pilot Bad Mother’s Handbook from ABC Studios. Joining the lineup of Fox’s Prison Break as a new regular character is Michael Rapaport in the role of a government agent. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Thirteen/WNET will serve as the presenting station for Hit Entertainment’s properties for PBS Kids (preschool shows) and PBS Kids Go (early elementary school kids), under a newly completed long-term deal between the US Public TV Station and Hit Entertainment. Additionally, Hit and WNET will co-produce Angelina Ballerina: The Next Steps, a new CGI series that introduces Angelina Ballerina as she starts at a new school for the performing arts. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: NBC Universal is reportedly in the first round of talks to make a bid on the U.K.’s indie All3Media to the tune of quite a few hundred million dollars. According to the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, hints were dropped about NBC’s searching for a bigger presence in the U.K. and Germany, two countries in which All3Media has production companies, in addition to a possible NBC request for All3Media financial info. All3Media’s units include Germany’s MME Moviement and other studios in the U.S., the U.K. and New Zealand. It was bought 2 years ago by Permira for $627 million. Twentieth Century Fox Television (TCFTV) appointed Jennifer Howell as SVP/Animation to spearhead the studio’s new animation department. Jennifer will also be the point person for the studio on the new initiative formed by TCFTV and Fox Broadcasting called FOX Inkubation to keep animation projects in the pipeline. In her new role, Jennifer will report to Gary Newman and Dana Walden, TCFTV Chairmen. ESPN added Brett Hurwitz as VP/Ad Sales Operations to be a member of the Sales and Marketing Business Operations team. Brett will manage the operational activities within customer marketing and sales for the network’s various distribution platforms. He will also supervise the team charged with customer service for all media among other duties. Brett will be based out of the network’s New York City offices. Matthew Hong joined Turner Sports as VP/GM, Sports Digital for the company’s new media division starting May 19. Matthew will manage business operations for the new media unit which includes the websites NASCAR.com, PGATour.com and PGA.com and the broadband channels TNT OverTime on NBA.com and TBS Hot Corner on MLB.com. Matthew will also manage the e-commerce capabilities for each digital property. Based in Atlanta, he will report directly to Lenny Daniels, SVP/Sports Production and New Media, Turner Sports. TV Land elevated Marco Bresaz to VP/Development and Original programming where he will oversee all original series productions for the network and will act as a liaison between the network and production. Suzanne Kolb advanced to CMO with E! Entertainment and The Style Network as well as GM for E! Online. She will oversee all marketing, communications and brand partnerships for the networks in addition to managing E! Online and Mystyle.com. She will continue to report to Ted Harbert, President/CEO, Comcast Entertainment Group. Contextual advertising company, ContextWeb, Inc. and operator of ADSDAQ Ad Exchange upped Jay Sears to EVP/Strategic Products and Business Development. Jay will concentrate on the strategy, direction and operations for the ADSDAQ Exchange. Additionally, Shanthini Sarkar moved up to Chief Product Officer with ContextWeb. She will maintain her current duties and now have extra P&L responsibilities for Channel Sales and Partnerships. She will also head Contextual Reach Extension for Publishers and Vertical Ad Networks. Alexander Schmidt-Vogel, founding Manager and present CEO of GroupM’s MediaCom Worldwide was made Global CEO of GroupM Trading. Alexander will take on his new role after a replacement has been named for him at MediaCom.
