Cynopsis: Classified

Advantage

05.11.10

Good morning – it’s Tuesday, May 11, 2010, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.

The Path To Promotions

Write down your goals, and how you can achieve them.  Create a written plan including the steps needed and deadlines.

Anticipate what you will do for the company in your new position, and start learning and refining the skills necessary to succeed.

Find a mentor above the level of position that you seek.  Let them know of your plans and ask for, and follow their advice.

Make sure the timing is right for the promotion.  Asking at an inappropriate time will all but destroy your chances.

Be ready and willing to train the person who will take your current position.

Let your boss know your plans and ask and follow his/her advice.

Always quantify the results of your good work and be ready to present them when asked.

As always, continue to expand your network.

Demonstrate your ability to do more, ask your boss for more responsibility.

Act and dress professionally at all times.  Promotions rarely go to people who don’t communicate well, dress poorly or are inappropriate at office functions.

Be a good team player, be willing to take the lead in group projects, and be generous with the credit.  Often, bosses will ask co-workers who they think would be a good manager.

Be a problem solver.  Along with good communication skills, problem solving is a priority with executives.

Stay ahead of the curve on industry news, trends and software.

Volunteer to do tasks others don’t want to do, like make presentations.

Know when you are at a job that is a dead end, know when to get out.

Economic News

Employers expanded payrolls by 290,000 jobs in April, the biggest gain in four years.  Even with the 66,000 temporary government jobs created for the 2010 census, private employers added 231,000 jobs, again the most in four years.
The revised numbers for March included more jobs added than previously reported, from 162,000 to 230,000.

Next week: The Follow Up Letter.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
LOST: Why the person next to you can change your Life
by Jessica Sitomer

In the show LOST, the survivors of the Oceanic Flight 815 crash are left to fend for themselves on a tropical island. As the seasons progress, they learn that they are not the only people on the island.

Throughout the seasons, characters like Jack, Sawyer, Kate, and Locke, find themselves asking questions of complete strangers. These questions help them survive and help them to get home.

Are you feeling a little lost?  Have you sought out mentors to give you advice in your field?

Well here’s a fresh idea: look outside of your industry. How many times have I seen people in the entertainment industry be introduced to “non-pros” and instantly write them off? Too many! People outside of our industry have no idea how our industry works, which is why they are so wonderful to brainstorm with.

Find a business owner, a car salesperson, a contractor, an investment banker, a textbook sales agent, a schoolteacher, an advertising executive, and brainstorm!

Here are some tips for brainstorming:

1.      Overview: give the person with whom you’re brainstorming a brief overview of the nature of your job, who hires you, how you generate work, and any other politics that may be necessary to mention.  NOTE: keep this conversation positive. This is not a time to complain about how everything’s changing and how frustrated you are, etc.

2.      Note taking: NO TALKING, NEGATING, or DEBATING. You listen as if every word out of their mouth is a million dollar idea. I know sometimes you may be thinking, “No, that wouldn’t work in my industry,” but write it down.

3.      Expanding questions: When someone gives you an idea that you are really connecting to, you can ask questions to help flesh out and expand the idea.   NOTE: these are not “Devil’s advocate” questions because you don’t think it will work.

4.      Sleep on it: Some of the ideas that you are most resistant to, can turn out to be the ideas that after a good night’s sleep, wake you up invigorated with possibility.

5.      Follow up: If you have any questions, call the person. If not, follow up to let them know when you’re implementing his or her idea. Why? Because if makes them feel great to know they helped.

You don’t have to get LOST on your career path.

~ ASK THE EXPERTS ~
Questions from our Readers
Answered by  Jessica Sitomer

I am going to an industry function next week and the CEO of a company I would love to work for will be there. How do I start a conversation with her after I introduce myself, and is it okay to ask for contact information if we just met? Plus I am a man and the CEO is a woman, does this make the first meeting more complicated?

The best way to start a conversation is on common ground, so check your social media (LinkedIn, Facebook) and your contact list (everyone you know in the entertainment industry) and see if you have any mutual associates whom you can bring up to break the ice. If the associate(s) told you to say, “Hi,” even better. With social media, you want to establish that they actually know each other and that they have a good relationship. If there are no mutual connections, the next step would be to research and see if you have any personal commonalities (you grew up in the same state, you both collect art, etc.) Finally, if no common ground can be found, you start with a unique compliment regarding her company. In other words, being the CEO of her company, what do you imagine she’s complimented on all of the time, and then come up with an authentic compliment that stands out.

As far as being a man approaching a woman, it’s all about creating rapport. Studies have shown that communication is made up of 7% the words you say, 38% the tonality in which those words are said, and 55% your physiology. Be sure the words and your tone are professional, give her space (Seinfeld taught us many things, including nobody likes a “close talker”), and be aware of her body language as well as your own.

Before asking for her contact information, be sure to establish a relationship. Have a reason why you’re asking for her contact information that came out of your conversation. Design a question that once she answers will require follow up questions, so you can ask her if it would be okay to follow up when you have further questions. Or ask her about networking or charity organizations that she recommends. At the end of the conversation, you can tell her you plan to look into the organization and would like to follow up with her, should you have any questions. Unless SHE brings it up, this is not the time to be asking about working for her company. It takes 3 conversations to establish a relationship, that’s why you want to create a reason for a second conversation. If you ask her for work the first time you meet, she may put up a wall and that will be the end of what could have been a great first impression.

I am a very hard worker and have taken on many more responsibilities during this recession. Our company is starting to hire again, is too early to ask for a raise? Might the company believe that allowing me to keep my job during this terrible time, was reward enough, and see my request as a sign of ungratefulness?

You will never know what the company believes, so don’t try and guess. If you don’t act ungrateful there’s no reason for them to assume that you are. What you believe is that you have worked hard and taken on more responsibility when their company was going through a hard time, and now you’d like to be appreciated for that (with a raise), now that they are in a better place financially. Create an outstanding proposal as to why you deserve the raise, how giving you a raise will benefit them (especially now that new people will be joining the team), and your long term vision for being a part of their team and helping them to continue to grow and flourish. Get feedback from trusted sources, practice your pitch, and then ask for a meeting. Do this sooner than later, and you can even tie in that you are asking for the raise now, so that they can budget for your raise as well as the new hires.

GENERAL CAREER TIPS  (part 2)
By Zig Gauthier

  • If you apply for a job and put someone down as a reference, give him or her a heads up via email or phone BEFORE they get a surprise phone call about a former employee.
  • Calls related to your career are to be made during business hours. Calls should generally be made between 9:00 and
  • 6:00, even if that means you have to excuse yourself for 5 minutes on a break or lunch break. Making calls outside of business hours is not only unprofessional, but unproductive for your own career pursuits.

  • Companies now screen and review individuals’ Facebook, Myspace and Twitter profiles. Be careful. While we all like to think they are personal, businesses now review potential candidates and eliminate them from consideration if their personal lives are not consistent with the company’s professional goals. You are accountable for your own profile(s), in addition to accountable for your circle of friends and associates. Further and very importantly, remember that setting your profile to “private” does not protect you if you are pursuing a career in entertainment. Why? Because most of these large companies are either owned or represented by entertainment companies. For example, it is very easy for Human Resources departments to access private profiles in Facebook and Myspace. Networks, studios and agencies don’t want to risk hiring employees who are irresponsible, have drinking problems, drug problems, post/comment on internal/confidential company information, make disparaging remarks about others in entertainment (yes, posting negative comments about movies, tv shows, stars, etc. is risky for individuals who want to have a career in entertainment and potentially work for one of those companies).
  • Check your spam/junk folder.  Don’t let an aggressive automated spam program prevent you from receiving the email inquiry from a large company about a position you submitted for.
  • Turn off email screening tools. Do not make it difficult for legitimate companies and hiring managers to communicate with you or respond to your resume.
  • Do not forward emails without personally investigating their legitimacy.  Microsoft is not offering $100 if you add your name to the email chain and Pay Pal is not shutting down your account. Forwarding these emails without verifying the veracity of them hurts your credibility.
  • Stapling/The Importance of Doing the Little Things Perfect  Each and every task you complete is a reflection of your talent and potential, regardless of how menial the task. Dominate the little tasks to perfection in order to build trust that you can handle larger projects with larger stakes. If you cannot do the little things perfect, your boss/company is never going to give you the opportunity to do more important projects. If you can’t be trusted to take pride in your work and staple a document PERFECTLY, no one is going to ask you to read a pilot script and provide input as to whether to move forward on that $3 million pilot or a $50 million feature film.
  • Meeting Basics  Every meeting is a job interview. Every meeting. In every meeting for the rest of your professional career, people will be sizing up whether they should invest in a relationship with you. Treat every meeting as a professional meeting, including attending with a leather binder, note pad, pen and fully attentive. Whoever said every question is a good question lied to you. Only ask smart questions or you don’t project intelligently.
  • Learn the process of how Hollywood works, accept that process and work your way up the ladder within the process. Those that hope for shortcuts do not find them and lose ground. Learn the terminology, the process, the major companies and the roles (agents, managers, studios, producers, development executives, etc.). Accept that we all start out as interns, production assistants and assistants and work our way up. There are no shortcuts. Do what the successful people did. Be a good assistant. Learn how to read scripts, read treatments, review cuts, give notes, etc.
