Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

PBS Kids Sprout, the preschool channel, will launch a separate 24-hour Sprout HD channel in September 2010.  The new Sprout HD will simulcast with the standard-definition digital channel, which features programming such as Sesame Street, Barney & Friends, Thomas & Friends, and Caillou.  Sprout is also shooting some of its original programming is in HD, including The Good Night Show with Nina and Star, to air on the new network.  Additionally, Sprout HD is looking to acquire new shows shot in HD.  Created under a partnership between Comcast, HIT Entertainment and PBS with Sesame Workshop, Sprout (www.sproutonline.com) launched on TV and online in September 2005 and is currently available in 50 million households.  Sprout debuted as a VOD service in April 2005.

In reporting its 2010 First Quarterly Results yesterday, 4Kids Entertainment revealed that it has “received a non-binding indication of interest from a third party to acquire 4Kids for a price representing a premium over the recent closing prices for the Company’s common stock…” 4Kids underlined that there is no assurance that the deal with the potential buyer will go through.  Additionally, 4Kids market capitalization has declined below the minimum $15 million market capitalization and thus the company’s shares could be delisted soon.


Disney XD confirms it is moving forward on producing two new live action pilots Billion Dollar Freshman, from writer/creator/executive producers Chris Peterson, and Bryan Moore and executive producer Mark Brazill (all three from That 70s Show), and Kickin’ It, from writer/creator/executive producer Jim O’Doherty (3rds Rock From the Sun) and Executive Producer (Zeke and Luther, Even Stevens).

  • Billion Dollar Freshman – the story revolves around brothers Ben (13) and Adam (15) who apparel to be average high school kids, but that is because they are working hard to blend in and hide their actual identity as ‘bionic super soldiers’ on the lam from the government. The human brothers were cloned in a government lab, and a la the Six Million Dollar Man, were given select bionic abilities, like  super-speed, super-strength, night vision, and ability to download information, however they are works in progress so everything doesn’t always work just as it is supposed to.  The brothers must work together to survive, which is sometimes complicated by the fact that Ben is the newer 2.0 version  a bit faster and smarter than his older brother Adam.  The pilot is directed by Mark Cendrowski (Big Bang Theory).
  • Kickin It – Set at the High Kicks Martial Academy, at a second-rate strip mall dojo that used to be a ladies under garment store, where there are few students and the Grandmaster (owner) is four months late on rent.  Things change when the Grandmaster finds Jack, an arrogant neighborhood kid that is quite the skateboarder.  The goal is to use Jack, who unwillingly joins the dojo, and the oddball kids at High Kicks to build a group that can go up against and beat the rival dojo, The Golden Dragon.  Eric Seaton (That’s So Raven) is directing.


BBC Worldwide‘s CBeebies will celebrate Father’s Day with a special family values-centric programming block on CBeebies en Espanol with host Roser Cabanas, a big sister type, in Latin America and the US Hispanic market.  On Father’s Day, June 20, CBeebies en Espanol will underline the importance and meaning of fathers/father figures, with of Pat, El Cartero (Postman Pat: Special Delivery), Roly Mo, El Tractor Rojo (Little Red Tractor), and Grande y Pequeno (Big & Small), from 2p-7p.

Cyberchase begins its eight season with the premiere of the Cyberchase Summer Challenge beginning June 25 on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings).  Deigned to prevent kids from experiencing the summer math slump, Cyberchase Summer Challenges features eight weeks of new and encore episodes of the series (on Fridays), new interactive online content and a new nationwide outreach effort to get kids engaged in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)-based challenges throughout the summer.  In addition to series regulars The Hacker (voiced by Christopher Lloyd) and Digit (voiced by Gilbert Gottfried), the new episodes feature a new villain named Ledge in two episodes on July 16 and 23.  Online Cyberchase ( www.pbskidsgo.org/cyberchase) will offer eight weekly kid-targeted math challenges, including building their own Cyberchase web games, June 25 through August 13, while PBSKidsGo.org/video ( www.pbskidsgo.org/video ) will stream the summer episodes on their premiere dates.  All episodes will also be available for free download at the PBSParents.org/cyberchase ( www.pbsparents.org/cyberchase) beginning on their premiere dates, along with hands-on activities tied to each episode.  Additionally, the Cyberchase Facebook page (facebook.com/cyberchase) will feature sneak peeks of the new episodes, fan events, exclusive behind-the-scenes videos, photos and more related to the Summer Challenge.

Cake Entertainment inks a deal for the 3D-animated series Angelo Rules (78×7) with Super RTL (Germany).  Targeted to K6-11, Angelo Rules is co-production between Cake Entertainment and Paris-based animation studio, TeamTO.  Distributed by Cake, the 3D-animated comedy and has already been acquired by Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoon Network in all territories excluding the US, Italy, France and Japan.  Based on the French books Comment Faire Enrager, by author Sylvie de Mathuisieulx and illustrator Sebastien Diologent, the series follows 12-yr-old Angelo as he works to take control of his life, with the help of two friends, through comic strategies and observations of human behavior.


KJG announces that its licensee Shreds has signed a deal to produce a range of preschool-aimed products featuring Pip, the cat from Henries-finalist Over the Moon, including aprons, mini tote bags, gift pack melamine sets and lunch bags.  The products will be available at garden centers, department stores and independent retailers across the UK.  Pip can already be found on a line of greeting cards available at popular brick and mortar and online retailers around the world.  Bluebird Brands recently signed on as a license to create Pip mugs, coasters, purses, wallets, and umbrellas.  Additionally, Over the Moon recently launched a line of Pip branded notebooks and party invites.

Character Options re-ups its UK master toy license for agreement for Classic Media‘s Postman Pat SDS until 2014.  Character Options plans to introduce six new products this summer including the SDS Electronic Helicopter and the Postman Pat SDS Convertible, which will be supported with TV ads.  Other existing licensees renewing their Postman Pat SDS licenses in the UK are VMC (accessories and dress up), TV Mania UK (apparel), Smiffy’s (dress up), Amscan (party wear), and Gemma (greeting cards).  Signing on as a new licensing partner is DNC (melamine and lunch bags).  Additionally, Flamingo Land, the UK’s largest theme park based in North Yorkshire, extends its Postman Pat SDS license following its initial deal last year, which included ‘meet and greets’, Pat’s Special Missions and mini shows.  Flamingo Land plans include similar activities for this season.

Big Idea Entertainment expands its licensing program for it VeggieTales brand with new merchandise deals.  New licensing partners include Frankford Candy & Chocolate (confectionery products), Hedstrom (play ball, toy products), and Sherwood Brands (Easter candy baskets, gift sets).  New VeggieTales products will be available beginning this spring.  In addition to the above three licensees, other recently named licensing partners include: Enesco Gund/Gregg Gift (plush toys & gifts); ScrollMotion (digital books); Carpets For Kids (area rugs); Kidlandia (personalized maps); Find It Games (games); and Trace Designs (wall murals).  Existing and ongoing licensing partners include ConAgra (fruit snacks), DaySpring (cards, calendars), Bendon Publishing (coloring and activity books), Cranston (fabrics) and Northwest (bedding, outer wear).

Bob the Builder, licensed/owned by HIT Entertainment, enter into a three-year partnership with Shelter, a UK-based housing and homelessness charity, to underline housing issues that face kids and families in the UK as well as raising money to offer kids a brighter future.  The first event under the partnership takes place at the premiere of Bob the Builder’s new feature length special Legend of the Golden Hammer on Saturday, 15 May at Leicester Square VUE. Further projects include cause-related marketing efforts at UK retailers and brand new Bob / Shelter co-branded fundraising campaigns, among other initiatives.
