Cynopsis: Kids!

05/10/11

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 10, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Discovery Enterprises International (DEI) enters into a one-year deal with Hasbro Studios to represent its programming to the non-theatrical market.  Under the pact, DEI will present Hasbro Studios’ kid/family content to global airlines at the Apex TV marketing in Spain.  DEI will feature Hasbro Studios’ programming including: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (52×22); Pound Puppies (52×22); The Adventures of Chuck and Friends (104×11); Transformers Prime (52×22); G.I. Joe Renegades (26×22).  DEI is Discovery Communications’ international program sales and licensing arm.

Film distributor Fox International breaks the $1 billion threshold in international box office receipts, the first distributor to achieve this milestone this year, with the help of its 3D animated feature Rio, per THR.  Rio has taken in $292 million internationally, and is expected to surpass $300 million this week.  This is the third year running that Fox International has been the first studio to meet the $1 billion mark.  No studio has reached the $1 billion in the domestic movie market.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Stanley Tucci joins the cast of The Hunger Games.  Tucci takes on the role of Caesar Flickerman, the TV host of the Hunger Games who interviews all 24 tributes (two kids/teens from each the 12 Districts) in the story.  Based on the first book in Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy, the Lionsgate live-action movie will be directed by Gary Ross from a script penned by Billy Ray and is set for a March 23, 2012 release.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network is set to debut new episodes of its live-action alternative series Dude, What Would Happen and Destroy Build Destroy on Wednesdays this summer, beginning June 1, 2011 at 8p and 8:30p, respectively.  Leading into the shows the network will also air new episodes of the live-action game show Hole In The Wall, which is produced by FremantleMedia North America.  Dude, What Would Happen, featuring hosts CJ Manigo, Ali Sepasyar and Jackson Rogow, is produced by Ping Pong Productions.  Hosted by Andrew W.K., the new episodes of Destroy Build Destroy will feature guest star appearances by rocker Pete Wentz (formerly of Fallout Boy) vs. rapper Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege (of Chiddy Bang) in Rock vs. Rap, and pro-skateboarder Chris Cole vs. BMXer Dakota Roche in Skaters vs. BMXers.  Created by Dan Taberski, the series is produced by Idiot Box & Mess Media.

Kzoom, VTM’s kid-aimed free-to-air channel in Dutch-speaking Belgium, acquires the girl 5-8 targeted TV series Puppy In My Pocket (52×13).  Kzoom plans to debut the series in mid-September 2011, which will run through Christmas 2011.  Additionally, Bright Vision Entertainment Licensing will release the first Puppy In My Pocket DVD in the Benelux territories in November 2011.  Puppy In My Pocket is a co-production between MEG toys, creator of the property, and Giochi Preziosi, with Mondo TV.

International preschool-targeted channel JimJam ( www.jimjam.tv  ) acquires Hello Kitty specials and Denver: The Last Dinosaur series for its Italian feed.

  • Jim Jam picks up three Hello Kitty specials from Sanrio, which the channel will air this spring.  A Journey through Fairyland and Journey to The West are exclusive territory premieres.  The Special English with Kitty is also part of the deal.
  • JimJam picks up Denver: The Last Dinosaur (50×30) from World Event Productions.  Set to debut on the channel Italian feed this spring, the series revolves around the adventures of a playful dinosaur and his friends as fortune seekers pursue them.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Can we build it?  Under a new deal between HIT Entertainment and Red Toolbox, a maker of tools and carpentry kids ergonomically designed for kid hands, now you’ll be able to build and fix whatever it is with a new line of real tools (and goggles, gloves, helmets) for preschoolers (age 3+) based on Bob the Builder.  The line is designed also to encourage kids to work on build-it-yourself projects and underline the ‘can do’ spirit of the Bob the Builder series/brand.  The products will make their trade debut at the National Hardware Show May 10-12 in Las Vegas.  The tools and will be available at home improvement and mass retailers later this year.  This marks the first license for Red Toolbox.

Disney Records will release the soundtrack to the new movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on May 17, 2011.  The soundtrack is helmed by composer Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean movies, The Lion King, Rango, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, among countless others), in collaboration with the Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, and features performances by trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.  The soundtrack album also features song re-mixed by DJs including Adam Freeland, Photek, and Static Revenger.  From Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 3D opens in theaters Friday, May 20, 2011.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Entertainment One (eOne) establishes a North American licensing division with the appointment of Jennifer Bennett as VP/Licensing and Merchandising North America.  Based in LA, Bennett and the new division will drive licensing for Peppa Pig in the US (the series debuted here earlier this year on Nick Jr.), as well as licensing efforts for eOne’s other properties.  Bennett will be responsible for managing overall business plans, budges and revenue goals, and will report to Andrew Carley, Head/Licensing.  She was previously EVP/Licensing and Brand Development, CCI Entertainment and VP/Merchandising and Licensing, Alliance Atlantis.

Scott Moffitt is named VP/Sales & Marketing, Nintendo of America.  Moffitt, who will be based at Nintendo’s Redwood City, California offices, will report to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime.  He is charged with furthering the growth of Nintendo hardware and software brands.  Moffitt had been with Henkel Consumer Goods, where he was SVP and GM for its Personal Care division in North American.  A marketing veteran, Moffitt previously toiled for PepsiCo.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  What classic TV character provided this advice to his young son: “It doesn’t matter what you look like. You can be tall or short, or fat or thin, or ugly or handsome, or you can be black or yellow or white. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is the size of your heart and the strength of your character.”  (This was then immediately followed by another character saying to dad — You’re a pretty nice guy.  You’re no Norman Vincent Peale, but you’re a pretty nice guy.”)  Hint:  It was not Andy Taylor.  HERMAN MUNSTER to his son EDDIE  Kudos to: Scott Johnson-Adlink/LA; Chip Beaman-Soundelux Design Music Group/Hollywood

Today’s Trivia Question:  Who am I?  I fight evil with my dog Peter.  I wear a robotic suit that gives me my power.  Without my suit, you might think I’m nothing much besides a Darwinian objet d’interet, and occasionally the likes of me are gathered up to go fishing.  Who am I?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
