Cynopsis: Sports
05/10/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, May 10, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NFL filed its brief to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday, citing that U.S. District Judge Susan Nelson’s granting of an injunction to lift the two-month-old lockout last month was unreasonable and failed to take into account the harm that would be inflicted on team owners as a result. The players have until May 20 to file a response and a hearing it set for June 3 for oral arguments on the league’s appeal. Meanwhile, the league also announced that free agency rule changes for this offseason were under consideration. NFL executive Greg Aiello tweeted that if the NFL is forced to open the league year by the court before a new CBA is reached, the league would consider “a wide range of alternatives depending on developments.”
CBS Sports veteran David Feherty has scored a deal with Golf Channel for a new series entitled, appropriately enough, Feherty. The series is set for 12-episodes and will feature the on-course reporter interviewing celebrities from the worlds of sports, entertainment and politics. The program marks the first original series from the channel since the outlet merged into the NBC Sports Group earlier this year. As part of his new partnership, Feherty also will serve as a contributing analyst during Golf Channel’s Live From coverage of select events.
Turner Broadcasting has locked in talent for its 1000th NBA Playoff game on Wednesday on TNT with Dick Stockton handling play-by-play and Mike Fratello as analyst for the Thunder/Grizzlies matchup at 9:30p. Turner has telecast NBA Playoff games since they initially acquired the NBA cable package for the 1984-85 season.
Think Texas is hungry for a winner? The Maverick’s sweep of the Lakers pulled nearly a million viewers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market during the final quarter hour on ABC as the Mark Cuban-owned team wrapped up a blowout the defending champions. Game four averaged 699,496 viewers overall for the telecast.
Showtime has decided to reair the Manny Pacquiao/Shane Moseley boxing event on its channel this Saturday at 10p. The replay of the title fight will be followed live by the Super Six world Boxing Classic Semifinal between WBA Super Middleweight Champion Andre “S.O.G” Ward and “King” Arthur Abraham at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Ca.
Clubs from soccer’s Premier League are closing in on a payday thanks to the league’s television contracts, which will distribute a record amount of money to all 20 teams. With international rights deals boosting revenues for the sport, the League champion will be in line for more than $80 million while the last place team is set for somewhere around $60.4 million. That money doesn’t include revenues from commercial or retail income, which will raise the amounts even higher.
The Australian Football League scored ratings records over the weekend on Fox Sports in Australia. The match, featuring the first-ever clash between Gold Coast and Brisbane, drew the most viewers ever for a pay-TV channel. Two weeks ago, the channel renewed its TV rights for the AFL in a record breaking deal, and the sport has seen four of this season’s games rank in the top ten most watched games in pay-TV history.
SportsNet New York is undergoing a rebrand, and launching a new series of ads under the banner “More Sports. More Testosterone.” The concept was conceived by Ogilvy & Mather New York to promote the networks extensive coverage of the total New York sports scene and features a series of ads that depict the positive impact watching sports has on a man’s testosterone levels. One ad focuses on how it has a positive impact on a man’s libido while another hones in on muscle development. The channel’s previous campaign touted “NY NY Sports Sports.”
Alliance Truck Parts has inked a three-year naming rights deal with Michigan International Speedway for the Nascar Nationwide Series Alliance Truck Parts 250. This year’s race will be held on Saturday, June 18. The company also sponsors the NASCAR Nationwide Series No. 12 Dodge Challenger which is driven by Sam Hornish Jr.
Weekend warriors can now do their MLB All-Star voting at the hardware store. Beginning today, fans visiting Lowe’s can place their ballots for the Summer classic thanks to a partnership between MLB and Scotts which will offer ballots to customers at the stores. Fans will have the opportunity to enter for a chance to win a VIP All-Star Week Experience, courtesy of Scotts. Tuesday also marks the debut of a one-hour primetime television special on ESPN, created by MLB Productions and presented by Scotts, that offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the art of field preparation and maintenance at the Major League level in Scotts Presents MLB 2011: Fields of Play.
Roush Fenway Racing is launching new sections of its site in an effort to draw business partners to the company portfolio. The enhanced site now highlights the marketing advantages of a NASCAR sponsorship commanding a large demographic appeal with more than 50 million people and the most proven brand-loyal fan base and the value derived from a Roush Fenway program associated with the most top Fortune 500 companies. A “Driving Success” flash video, produced with NASCAR Media Group, is also featured on the revamped site demonstrating Roush Fenway’s passion for winning and formula for driving its successful motorsports marketing program.
That taste in your mouth could soon be from LeBron James. The NBA superstar’s company Purebrands is set to launch a line of dissolvable energy strips dubbed Sheets. The launch of the strips will be supported initially by a $10 million marketing campaign that includes James as well as partners Amar’e Stoudemire, Ray Rice and others. The campaign will incorporate social media, traditional advertising, and massive sampling programs.
Soccer footware and clothing company Pele Sports has tapped McCann Erickson West as its advertising agency, and charge them with creating a marketing campaign to introduce Pele Sports products to consumers worldwide.
AT&T and Special Olympics launching a new cause-related marketing initiative to support the organization and its mission to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. As part of the nationwide initiative, AT&T will make a donation to Special Olympics in the amount of $40 for each online purchase made on eligible AT&T products and services on the program’s dedicated website. The website will seek to educate consumers about the new campaign, highlight Special Olympics athletes, and also features unique AT&T products and services and other helpful resources designed for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
