Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Being an early mover in the live video space has made Major League Baseball an expert in all things streaming and the league is now branching out to offer its services to others. ESPN’s soon-to-be-renamed web video portal ESPN3.com is changing web video service providers from April, turning to Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) to handle support of its more than 3,500 live streaming events. ESPN360.com previously utilized Move Network’s platform, which requires users to download Microsoft’s Flash player. (MLBAM’s solution is Flash based, operating within most popular web browsers.) ESPN3.com, which reaches consumers by striking carriage deals with individual MSOs and ISPs, is currently in 50 million U.S. broadband homes. MLBAM also worked with CBS Mobile to develop its March Madness iPhone apps this year (see below.)

BetterCallSaul.com even has a web cam capturing some private moments with Saul.
Royal Oak, MI-based Dare Comics is getting a lot of mileage of its crime fighting-themed super hero title “The Hunter.” Michigan-based production house PixoFactor Entertainment is developing a 9-episode “motion comic” series and a downloadable interactive game based on the title, positioned for distribution online and via smartphones and tablet devices. Dare also signed a deal with LA-based Scarlet Fire Entertainment to develop a feature film around the comic.

Companies will spend $119.6 billion on online and digital strategies, from search engine keywords to webinars, vs. a total of $111.5 billion on traditional print advertising. NCAA’s March Madness basketball tourney is the second most lucrative post-season sports franchise in terms of national TV ad revenue (second only to the NFL playoffs/Superbowl) and digital media is becoming a huge part of integrated cross platform buys for the “big dance”, according to research firm Kantar Media. TV ad spending for the tournament declined by 8.5% to $589 million last year but increased ad revenue from CBSSports.com’s March Madness On Demand offering helped make up for the decline.
