Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cbeebies commissions the new wild life series Andy’s Wild Adventures (40×14) from the BBC‘s Natural History Unit (NHU).  Set to premiere on CBeebies in 2012, Andy’s Wild Adventures stars Cbeebies’ Andy Day as an animal keeper at a an animal park, along side a curious puppet cat sidekick.  The new preschool series will feature the NHU’s noted archive and will utilize digital CGI and green screen technology to transport Andy and the cat puppet via an all terrain vehicle to locations outside the park, where the action is, as they seek answers to various questions.  Andy’s Wild Adventures is executive produced by Wendy Darke (Deadly 60), and produced by Charlotte Crosse.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Cookie Jar Entertainment wraps production in Toronto on its new live-action comedy series Debra! (13 episodes).  Scheduled to debut on Family Channel (Canada) in June 2011, the new series revolves around a girl named Debra Carnegie Cameron Delong who wants to make the world (e.g. school, community, friends) a bit better with a little teenage know how and imagination.  The series stars Naimh Wilson (Saw IV, V, and VI) as Debra, as well as Will Jester (Rookie Blue) as her pal Preston, Jessica Holmes (Royal Canadian Air Force), and David Haydn-Jones (NCIS) as Preston’s parents.  The series is co-executive produced by Stacey Curtis (Naturally Sadie, The Best Years) and executive producer and writers are Andrew Nicholls and Darrell Vickers (Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius).  Kevin May (The Latest Buzz, Naturally Sadie) serves as producer.  Cookie Jar will feature the series at MIP TV this April 2011 in Cannes.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network picks up new episodes of three of its live action Wednesday night series, Hole in the Wall (7:30p) and Dude, What Would Happen (8p), and a third season of Destroy Build Destroy (8:30p).  The game show Hole in the Wall is produced by FremantleMedia North America, with Scott St. John serving as executive producer.  Dude, What Would Happen is produced by Ping Pong Productions, with executive producers Brad Kuhlman and Casey Brumels.  Destroy Build Destroy was created by Dan Taberski and is produced by Idiot Box & Mess Media, with Taberski and Scott Messick serving as executive producers.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) enters into a TV deal for the Nickelodeon with terrestrial TV network TNT (Russia).  Under the TV pact, TNT acquires 250 hours of Nickelodeon’s programming, including the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, As Told By Ginger, Hey Arnold and My Life As A Teenage Robot, and for the first time the live-action series iCarly, Big Time Rush and The Troop.  The content will be localized for Russia, and will air as part of TNT’s existing Nickelodeon branded programming block, which reaches 100 million households (80% of Russian TV households).  VIMN’s 24-hour Russian-language Nickelodeon ( www.nickelodeon.ru  ) service is currently available via a number of cable, satellite and IPTV operators including NTV Plus, Raduga TV, Er Telecom, Akado, Rostelecom, Beeline and others.

Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group will introduce its tween-targeted, live-action adventure series On the Run (26×30) next month at MIP TV 2011.  Based on author Gordon Korman’s book series, On the Run, the eponymous TV series revolves around Aiden and younger sister, Meg, escape from a juvenile work farm and set out to solve the mystery of their parents’ sudden disappearance.  Daphne Ballon (Life With Derek, Baxter) will serve as show runner for the tween series, which is being developed by Skywriter’s Meghan Davies. Kevin Gillis, Margery Walshaw and Simon Walshaw are executive producing.

Leading up to Warner Bros. release of the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2 (July 15, 2011), ABC Family will host a Harry Potter Marathon, Thursday-Sunday, July 7-10.  The network will air the first five Harry Potter movies during the marathon.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products UK inks a licensing deal with kid’s book/magazine publisher, DC Thomson, to produce Nickelodeon Magazine for the UK.  Targeted to tween/teen girls, Nickelodeon Magazine will publish every three weeks (17 issues per year), with an initial circulation of about 40,000.  The new magazine title will feature exclusive behind-the-scenes content, interviews and photos featuring Nickelodeon’s shows including iCarly, Big Time Rush, Victorious and SpongeBob SquarePants.  Each issue will come with an exclusive gift.  The debut issue features the popular series House Of Anubis, and Nickelodeon news and celebrity, pop and TV news, as well as style and consumer product sections.  The launch of Nickelodeon Magazine is part of Nickelodeon UK’s brand expansion effort to grow its reach and create new multi-platform opportunities for its properties and content.  Other developments include Nickelodeon Land with Blackpool Pleasure Beach and Nickelodeon Cruises with Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, will publish an updated, expanded, and revised version of Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book for release on Tuesday, May 10, 2011.  The revised edition will feature a new cover and new content by Diary of A Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney, with a one million copy first printing.  The original version of the book (3+ million copies), will go out of print.  To coincide with the book’s re-release, Amulet Books is sponsoring a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Comics Contest, which begins March 10, and invites kids 16 and under to mail in an original cartoon, more information can be found later this week at www.wimpykid.com/contest .  Fox will release the second Wimpy Kid feature film, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, on March 25, 2011.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) has also completed a series of new consumer products deals for SpongeBob SquarePants in Russia: C-Trade (plush, outdoor and sporting items); OOO Cotton Club (personal care products); TD Eldorado (apparel); and Academy (stationery).  Scheduled to launch this summer, the products will be available at retailers including Metro, Auchan, Korablik and Real.

The UK will get a set of magical postage stamps.  The Royal Mail releases the new set of Magical Realms stamps today.  The set of eight stamps includes a mix of film images and newly created images and features myths and legends of King Arthur via two stamps of Merlin and Morgan le Fay, with two stamps feature images of Aslan and the White Witch from C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia. The set is rounded out with four First Class stamps featuring Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter Series, and Rincewind and Nanny Ogg from Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  The original of this Rembrandt now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  A print was used as a prop in the foyer of this sitcom house (tho from time to time was replaced with a mirror).  The painting features a young girl with an item too obvious to mention or it would give away the answer to this question.  What show was this on?   BEWITCHED, THE PAINTING WAS CALLED “GIRL WITH A BROOM” AND THE GIRL LOOKED A LOT LIKE A VERY YOUNG SAMANTHA  Kudos to … nobody.  Hmmm.
