CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis
03/07/06
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 7, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
CBS has delivered full-season orders for the 2006-2007 season to 14 series. First on the come-on-back list are the obvious — 60 Minutes, Amazing Race, Cold Case, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, NCIS, Numb3rs, Survivor, Two and a Half Men, Without a Trace. And among this season’s freshman who will return next year are Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer and How I Met Your Mother.
Now consider who’s not on the CBS for-sure list for next season – which doesn’t mean they’re out, just means they’re not shoe-ins: King of Queens, Close to Home, Courting Alex, Out of Practice, Still Standing, 48 Hours and the too-soon to tell pair of The Unit (debuts tonight) and New Adventures of Old Christine.
Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Sons & Daughters at 9p
CBS: The Unit at 9p
* MORE GOOD STUFF *The Weinstein Company, Bravo, and Miramax are bringing PROJECT RUNWAY back for a third season, with Heidi Klum returning as host. PROJECT RUNWAY is exec produced by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz of Magical Elves, Heidi Klum and her managers Desiree Gruber and Jane Cha.
Program Partners’ Crime Watch (featuring the original off-net series Cold Squad and Stone Undercover) has been cleared in over 70% of the U.S, including 40 of the top 50 markets. Crime Watch debuts in the fall.
Fox Reality will premiere American Idol Extra, a behind the scenes look at American Idol, airing after the weekly vote-off show on Fox. The original Fox Reality series, produced by 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia, begins on Thursday, March 16 and will continue through the crowning of this season’s winner in May.
Bunches of you watched Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday night! On its post-Oscar telecast, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live delivered the show’s third-highest numbers ever across the board — 4.4 million Total Viewers, 2.0 A25-54, 1.7 A18-49 and a 1.3 rating among A18-34. Guesting were Oscars host Jon Stewart along with Quentin Tarantino and Johnny Knoxville.
Okay, let’s put this out front and be done with it: Did you like Jon Stewart in his hosting duties at the Oscars or not? You guys know TV better than anyone, so let’s have it! Click here and write “yes” or “no” to in the subject line hit send. Results here tomorrow.
If you have the eyes for it, Cingular will soon launch its Cingular Video service which content from NBC, Fox News, Cartoon Network, ESPN and HBO. For those subscribed to Cingular’s unlimited 3G service (currently available in just 16 markets), the video is free (except HBO which has an additional monthly fee). The service will provide 3-5 minute clips of a variety of programs. That’s the good news. The potentially bad news is the result of a recent survey by RBC Capital Markets which asked 1000 people if they’d be interested in watching TV clips on their cell phones. 75% said no.
NBC Universal TV will spend approx $600 million on the purchase of the women driven iVillage.com website. According to NBCU CEO Robert Wright, this acquisition will provide the company a way to connect with women’s issues, as well as use the site to provide content from NBC Universal. At the same time, iVillage will be promoted on the network’s broadcast shows.
National Lampoon has formed National Lampoon Incubation Studios. The studio will develop comedy material for all of National Lampoon’s media properties, including TogaTV.com, NationalLampoon.com, National Lampoon Mobile, television network National Lampoon College, as well as branded motion picture, radio, DVD, CD and publishing properties. It will also collaborate with external production partners.
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *NBC has ordered up a new pilot starring Andy Richter called Andy Barker, P.I. The pilot was written and will be exec produced by Conan O’Brien with NBC Universal TV and Conaco Prods. The comedy is about Barker, an accountant who sets up shop in what used to be a private detective’s office. When no new clients knock on his door, he starts taking on the cases of the people looking for the previous tenant.
Savannah Guthrie has been named lead correspondent for Court TV‘s new Washington, D.C. bureau. Savannah will be based in D.C., reporting on legal and judicial news. Senior Field Producer Bryan Lavietes has been assigned to the bureau. Senior Editor Fred Graham, who is overseeing the network’s new editorial board, will continue to cover key news events.
* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Michael Steinberg is upped to COO/General Counsel of Ellis Entertainment. Michael will be responsible for the operations of the parent company, and oversee production and distribution divisions Ellis Vision and Ellis Releasing, as well as affiliated VisionTV International.
Nancy Mammana becomes VP/Davie-Brown Entertainment, and she will open a new New York office for the company. Nancy will be responsible for providing the overall development of client business in consumer product and beverage areas and overseeing strategies and activities for major client accounts. She will also be charged with growing the New York office through new business development.
Brian Candee is upped to VP/Sales for D&R Radio, an Interep company.
* RATINGS *Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: Aha! No ratings yet for Sunday night because we don’t have the final numbers yet from Nielsen Media Research. But here’s what I do have … For its full 8-1130p broadcast, the Oscars drew in a 27.1 HH rating wtih a 40 share (down from the previous two years by about 3 share points) in overnight metered market numbers, and reached 38.8 million U.S. viewers during its 3-1/2 hour telecast, averaging a 13.9 A18-49 rating per fast affiliate numbers. Overall for the night, ABC earned a 22.9/34 in metered market numbers. More on Sunday night in tomorrow’s issue.
