Cynopsis: DIGITAL
3/06/07
Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, March 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Todayshow.com relaunched with a new look, new editorial content and new interactive features. The site encourages more interaction via blogs, message boards, live votes and emails as visitors browse through new topic sections including people, participate, travel and pets. It also features “allDAY”, a new video blog from Today Show co-anchor Al Roker, as well as selected shared content from NBC sister-site iVillage.com. Video segments from the Today Show will continue to be updated daily at the top of the site, with clips from earlier in the week accessible toward the bottom.
The CW added America’s Next Top Model to its roster of shows available on CWTV.com. The latest episodes of the show, which began its 8th cycle last week, will be available the day after their Sunday encore telecasts and will remain online for four weeks. CWTV.com also streams episodes of Supernatural, Veronica Mars, One Tree Hill, Everyone Hates Chris, All of Us, Girlfriends and The Game.

Lucas hinted to the audience at the Museum of TV and Radio’s William S. Paley Festival the series would take advantage of new methods digital distribution.
Comedy Central will offer the first-ever HD episode of South Park to Xbox Live members for free from March 20 through April 3. The episode can be downloaded via the Xbox Live Marketplace, an iTunes-like digital store with more than 1,500 hours of programming. Best Buy will also offer free HD DVDs of the “Good Times With Weapons” episode with the purchase of any Xbox 360 console or HD DVD drive during the same period. Season 11 of South Park premiers on Comedy Central on Wednesday at 10 PM ET/PT.
CNBC’s Jim Cramer has been given an increased presence on CNBC.com, which includes video clips, a posting log and a link to nbcuniversalstore.com for a virtual store of Mad Money merchandise. The “Mad Cap Recap” gives text-based recaps of each night’s shows, minutes after it airs. Users must register to view the content. Access is restricted to U.S. residents only.
Separately, CNBC.com launched its first ever “Million Dollar Portfolio Challenge,” awarding 10 weekly winners $10,000 each based on how well participants can invest 1 million “CNBC Bucks” for simulated trades on the NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX exchanges. All ten weekly winners will compete for a $1 million grand prize, awarded to the player with the richest portfolio after the close of the markets on May 25, 2007.
AT&T’s IPTV service U-verse agreed to carry ION Media Network‘s planned suite of digital programming channels. ION, formerly known as Pax TV, has launched two diginets thus far: bilingual, educational children’s network qubo and lifestyle, wellness and personal growth channel Ion Life. U-verse is the video side of AT&T Project Lightspeed, deploying fiber optics to individual neighborhoods and utilizing existing infrastructure to deliver digital video, high speed internet and, in the future, Voice-over-IP services.
Fisher Communications, Journal Broadcast Group and Granite Broadcasting stations will offer a user-generated news service later this month, dubbed YouNewsTV. Developed by local website vendor Broadcast Interactive, YouNewsTV invites visitors to stations’ websites to upload news footage they shot, to be vetted by the station’s staff. Selected stories will be tagged with eight-to-fifteen second ad clips for distribution on the local station’s web site, other news sites or even on the station’s local air, with creators and stations sharing in the revenue.
Pace Micro Technology introduced a new family of CableCARD products including CableCARD versions of its Tahoe HD and Vegas SD DVR, as well as a new version of the Miami HD box. The Miami HD set-top can be deployed as a standard set-top, or subscribers can add DVR functionality to it through an external hard drive port. The SD DVR box features a dual-tuner DVR, supports the latest EPG, VOD and DOCIS applications and is OCAP compatible.
The Enemy Swim Day School in Waubay, South Dakota won the first National Verizon Tech Savvy Award yesterday, designed to award grassroots organizations for helping to bridge the digital divide for parents and kids. The Native American school was given a $25,000 prize for introducing parents to the internet, digital cameras and publishing software they are using to work with their children on keeping the Dakotah language alive. Four regional programs in Providence, R.I., Fort Dodge, Iowa, Addison, Texas and Los Angeles, California were also recognized.
WWE’s $70 million campaign to promote WrestleMania 23 will hit on all cylinders including local media, prime time cable and broadcast spots, broadband, live events, outdoor, home video, merchandising, licensing, publishing, VOD and mobile content. Cable affiliates such as Comcast, Time Warner and Charter will support the retail-oriented Fan Axxess Tour via cross-channel spots, e-blasts, website and cable guide tags. The pay-per-view event takes place April 1 at a sold out Ford Field.
A new study by Nielsen Wireless and Interactive Services claims two thirds of men 18-34 have access to a video game console in their homes, and the number of video game consoles grew by 19.5% since the forth quarter of 2004. Households with consoles connected to the internet have grown to 4.4 million, not counting the recently launched PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii platform. Nielsen conducted the research in preparation of the launch of its GamePlay Metrics service later this year, designed to provide advertisers, agencies, hardware manufactures and game developers information necessary for negotiating in-game advertising.
Oscar.com logged in 139,000 unique visits on Oscar Sunday according to comScore Networks, a one-day increase of 219% from the day before the telecast. In comparison, IMDB.com traffic rose 5 percent on that day versus two weeks prior, and EW.com saw a gain of 193% compared to the previous Sunday. Eonline.com actually saw traffic decline the day of the Oscars, due to earlier spikes attributed to coverage of the Anna Nicole Smith and Britney Spears debacles.
Nielsen named Mitchell J. Habib to the newly created position of Executive Vice President, Global Business Services. He will be responsible for worldwide operational and information technology functions, including information development and delivery systems, applications, IT infrastructure and day-to-day facility operations. He will report to David Calhoun, chairman and CEO of Nielsen.
TV Guide Channel hired former Court TV veteran Brad Westermann as Vice President, Western Region Sales. TV Guide Channel has also promoted Adam Nash to Vice President, Eastern Regional Sales; Eric Johnson to Director of its Chicago sales office; and Megan Gormley to Manager of its Detroit sales office. The four executives will oversee sales efforts for TV Guide Channel, TV Guide’s VOD network SPOT, TV Guide Broadband and the company’s Interactive Program Guide.

We will accept 350 word editorials from current college students all around the country and the world. The four most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written pieces on any topic related to television will be included in a future edition of Weekender , and each winning editorial will be awarded a prize of $350. College Professors, moms and dads – encourage your students to participate! All entries should be emailed no later than midnight on Friday, April 20th to me at cynthia@cynopsis.com, SUBJECT: Weekender College Edition. Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted. Good luck!
The YouNewsTV announcement follows a flurry of citizen journalist initiatives, born from underground blogs and chat rooms and reaching legitimacy when both the Democratic and Republican parties issued press credentials to citizen bloggers covering their national conventions. The South Korean online newspaper OhmyNews is believed to have started the trend of accepting, editing and publishing news articles from readers back in 2000. The site was considered influential in the 2002 South Korean presidential elections; winner Roh Moo granted his first interview to OhmyNews after being elected. Check out the English-language international version of the site at http://english.ohmynews.com.
A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at wayne@cynopsis.com and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
