Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 5, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

News Corp. and Disney are currently in negotiations that might result in one of the two acquiring a majority stake in Hulu, according to The Wall Street Journal. The two media conglomerates each currently own a one-third stake in the video streaming site. Comcast, Hulu’s other big-name investor, would remain on as a minority stakeholder if such a deal takes place. Per the report, News Corp. and Disney are also discussing selling Hulu outright or changing its business model. On that front, Disney’s more interested in pursuing an ad-centric business model for Hulu, while News Corp. prefers the subscription-based track.


HitBliss is a new video streaming site that wants to take on the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, albeit with a slightly different view on how users should experience content and advertising online. The site allows users to build up virtual currency for watching ads. Once enough credits have been accrued, users can exchange them for watching a TV show or movie. All of this is done via a section on the site called HitBliss Earn. In HitBliss Earn, users build a profile with information that advertisers can use to target them with relevant ads. HitBliss is working with major studios, including NBCUniversal, Paramount, Starz, and Warner Bros., to bring new feature films to the site four months after they leave theaters, and new episodes of TV shows the day after they air. The site also gives users the option to forego this new virtual currency system and directly rent or buy TV shows and movies with their own money. 24-hour film rentals cost $3.99, while TV episode downloads are priced at $2.99.

In a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Comcast said that NBCUniversal has “received and is negotiating several ‘full freight’ requests” to offer its full suite of linear programming to online video distributors. This suggests that there might be multiple companies — and not just Intel — that are looking to offer some sort of internet TV service. Comcast did not name which distributors it’s received requests from and/or is negotiating with.  

The Fine Brothers, the YouTube stars behind popular online shows such as Kids React, MyMusic, and Spoiler Alert, have launched their first animated series, Emo Dad. Premiering today, the five-episode series, which follows a father going through a very “emo” mid-life crisis, will air once a month on the brothers’ self-titled YouTube channel. In between the monthly episodes, the channel will offer behind-the-scenes content of the animation and vocal recording process, as well as transmedia elements through Twitter.

AARP is launching a new channel and web series on YouTube called Movies for Grownups. Hosted by Bill Newcott, the weekly series will provide sneak peaks at upcoming films as well as new VOD and home entertainment releases that would appeal to the 50+ crowd. New episodes will be made available every Thursday.

IFC has made a “pre-premiere” episode of Out There, the network’s new animated series, available for free online across IFC.com, Hulu, YouTube, and Facebook, as well as via several TV Everywhere and VOD platforms. The “Springoween” episode features the town of Holford celebrating Halloween in the spring after a snowstorm led to the cancellation of the holiday in the fall (sounds familiar to us in the northeast, no?). The episode will air on IFC this Friday at 10pm ET/PT.

MTV is programming a live multi-screen event tonight to announce the nominees for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. Beginning at 7:58pm ET, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and 2013 MTV Movie Awards host Rebel Wilson will unveil the nominees for “Movie of the Year” on MTV. Following that, the 2013 MTV Movie Awards Nominations Spectacular will move online to MTV.com. From 8pm to 8:30pm ET, Horowitz will be joined by cast-members of a bunch of MTV shows to announce the nominees for all of the other categories. Voting will begin immediately after the live-stream ends. The awards show is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 14, from the Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City, CA.

Tastemade is a new multichannel network (MCN) on YouTube focusing on creating and curating food-centric programming. The network has already inked partnerships with popular “culinary influencers” on YouTube to give the network a jump-start in reaching food-lovers on the video site. In addition, Tastemade plans to roll out a slew of original series, many of which will be produced in-house via the company’s production space in Southern California. The original programming slate will include “tastemaker series” as well as cooking shows and food/travel fare. To support the global launch of Tastemade, the network has secured $5.3 million in Series A funding from Redpoint Ventures.


The International Data Corporation’s (IDC) latest mobile projections for 2013 indicate that there will be more worldwide shipments of smartphones (918.6 million; 50.1% of shipments) than feature phones. By the end of 2017, IDC expects global smartphone shipments to hit 1.5 billion, which would be a little over two-thirds of feature phone shipments projected for the same year. This growth will be led predominantly by emerging markets as smartphone growth in the US slows down.

A new market forecast from ABI Research says that global smartphone app downloads will reach 56 billion this year. Google’s Android operating system will account for a majority of these downloads with 58%, with Apple’s iOS commanding a 33% share by years end. Looking outside of that duopoly, ABI projects Microsoft’s Windows Phone to finish the year with nearly 4% of smartphone app downloads, with BlackBerry following behind with 3%.


Madison Logic, a provider of lead solutions for advertisers, has named Mark Herschberg as its new Chief Technology Officer and Dennis Syracuse as its new Chief Marketing Officer. Both are new positions at the company. As CTO, Herschberg will focus on scaling the company’s platform and launching a new data science team. As CMO, Syracuse will be responsible for developing a communication platform to support Madison Logic’s domestic and international growth.

Sparkpr, an independent PR agency focusing on the tech industry, has named Jim Dowd and Candice J. Yusim as Managing Directors, based in NY and LA, respectively. Dowd will run the Consumer division while Yusim will oversee the agency’s new multiplatform media, music, and entertainment practice.
