DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into a co-production deal with UK-based The Hive Enterprises to produce the new 3D CGI animated series The Hive (78×7). The preschool series revolves around the Bee family, a colorful group of bees, including Pappa Bee, Mamma Bee, Buzzbe and Rubee, among others, and their everyday lives including neighbors, friends and the world around them. Set to begin production soon, the first season of The Hive is budgeted at US$5.2 million. Negotiations are underway for global satellite broadcasting deal.

MORE KIDS STUFF
CBeebies gives its preschool line-up a refresh for spring 2010. Beginning Tuesday, April 6, Driver Dan’s Storytrain and 64 Zoo Lane are joining In The Night Garden as part of the Bedtime Hour programming line-up. The Bedtime Story remains as the final programming of the day. Waybuloo will run weekday mornings and afternoons on CBeebies and BBC Two, and on weekends on CBeebies. Additionally, on three consecutive Mondays this April CBeebies will launch the new live-action music series ZingZillas on April 5 at 8a, followed by the new series Bob The Builder: Ready! Steady! Build on April 12, and Big Barn Farm from April 19.
RDF Rights signs further program sales for the kid-aimed arts and crafts series Mister Maker. Acquiring all three seasons of Mister Maker are CITI Channel (Ukraine), Ecuavisa (Ecuador) and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East). Additionally, picking up seasons 2 and 3 of the series are ABC Australia and Hop! (Israel), while NTV7 (Malaysia) and Medicorp TV12 (Singapore) take seas 1 and 2. BBC Kids commissioned a fourth season, entitled Mister Maker Comes to Town (20×20), that will see Mister Maker make his way to towns across the UK in the Makermobile. RDFR holds worldwide rights in all media for the property.
9 Story Entertainment has wrapped production on a second season of its adventure series Survive This (13 episodes). Hosted by Les Stroud, 9 Story will debut the new season kid/tween-targeted series, which features eight new teen 14-17-year-old contestants, next month at MIPTV 2010. YTV (Canada) plans to debut the second season of Survive This on April 19, 2010.
Corus Entertainment, which already manages on-air sales for Teletoon’s (Canada) English-languages TV services, adds representation of Teletoon’s kid/youth-targeted English interactive sales for the online brands, teletoon.com ( www.teletoon.com ), teletoonretro.com ( www.teletoonretro.com ) and teletoonatnight.com ( www.teletoonatnight.com ). Corus’ VP/Digital Media, Tim Cormick, will manage Teletoon’s English interactive sales. Corus’ youth-focused portfolio of websites represented by Corus’ interactive sales team include Corus’ YTV.com, Treehousetv.com, nickcanada.com, as well as representing Nick.com and Nickjr.com in Canada.

Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release, for a limited time, Beauty and the Beast: Diamond Edition on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD combo pack (2 Blu-ray discs and a DVD) on October 5, 2010, followed on November 23 by the release of a standard definition 2-disc DVD release of the movie. The Blu-ray HD of the movie features new picture restoration, 7.1 digital Surround Sound and bonus features, including behind the scenes features, deleted scenes, enhanced music tracks, games and so forth.
Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) renews its licensing deal with Bell Sports for its Ben 10 action franchise. The new tw0-year deal extends on the previous one through 2011, and includes a full line of Bell Sports safety helmets and knee/elbow pads featuring characters from Ben 10. CNE recently inked a similar deal with Bell Sports based on Nelvana and Spin Master’s Bakugan brand. Created by Man of Action and produced at Cartoon Network Studios, episodes of season three of Ben 10 Alien Force are premiering on Cartoon Network on Fridays at 8:30p.
Chapman Entertainment launches a campaign targeting preschoolers 2-4 with free Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car booklets, which include activities, games and competitions that will be distributed to kids via preschools and nurseries throughout the UK. In addition to the booklets, Chapman Entertainment launches Fifi’s Sunflower Challenge following the distribution of Fifi sunflower seeds to nurseries, kids can be entertained and learn about flowers while working to grow the tallest sunflower. Teachers, parents and kids are invited to upload photos of their sunflower to a specific Fifi microsite, www.fifiandtheflowertots.com/sunflowerchallenge .
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Teletoon Canada appoints Alan Gregg as Director/Original Content from April 19, 2010. Gregg will be responsible for original content development and production for Teletoon’s two English and two French networks and respective multiplatform services, as well as the original production team in Toronto and Montreal and will work closely with production partners across Canada. He will report to Carole Bonneau, VP/programming, Teletoon Canada. Gregg has toiled in the kid’s TV business for 12 years, most recently story editing a new preschool series for Guru Studio. He previously worked for YTV, opened the Toronto office of Brown Bag Films where he served as VP/International Production, and held senior positions, including as VP/Production & Distribution, at Alliance Atlantis’ Children’s Television division.
RATINGS
The Saturday, March 27 premiere of Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA), 8-9:30p, screamed and slimed its way in as the second biggest KCA show ever with an average of 7.6 million Total Viewers 2+. The show also drew 3.7 million K2-11. The show trailed just behind last year’s KCA 2009, which delivered 7.7 million Total Viewers 2+. Other KCA ratings milestones include:
- Hosted by Kevin James, this years KCA also received the most votes in the show’s history, with 118 million votes cast between February 25-March 27, (+130% vs. last year).
- KCA also brought Nick.com its highest trafficked day ever on March 27, with 38.4 million page views. Meanwhile the KCA website had 2.2 million visits and 1.9 million unique visitors, with the KCA live webcams generating 1.5 million streams, that is up +240% over last year.
- Additionally, leading out of KCA was Nickelodeon’s premiere of its new series Victorious at 9:30p, which becomes the network’s second biggest live-action series debut ever with 5.7 million Total Viewers 2+, behind Big Time Rush (1/18/10). Victorious delivered 2.7 million K2-11.
