Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 30, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Erasing some doubt about whether a lack of Flash support will hurt the iPad, popular Content Delivery Networks Brightcove and Ooyala announced support of next-generation HTML5 video streaming when detecting an iPad. Seattle-based white label content management platform Delve Networks also announced it will deliver video to the iPad when it launches on April 3. Finally Apple, whose stock closed at an all-time high yesterday, confirmed that Best Buy will also be selling a select amount of iPad’s this Saturday. Only Apple Stores will offer free personal set ups and workshops, however, so expect bigger lines there. Doors open at 9 a.m. – sleeping bags not provided.
Digital publishing solution Zinio, which creates digital replica editions of print publications, unveiled the new Zinio Reader 4 built upon the Adobe AIR platform. Zinio Reader 4 enables users to clip and save pages to favorites and share content across social networking services. National Geographic‘s interactive April 2010 “Water” edition will take advantage of the release and Zinio’s “Unity” platform, readable on PCs, Macs, netbooks and touch-screen and tablet devices, including the iPhone and the upcoming iPad.
Taking advantage of its hometown connection, Cox Communications will have exclusive access to 3D coverage of the Masters Tournament in Atlanta, beginning on April 7 with the Par 3 contest (golf’s equivalent of the NBA slam dunk competition.) Masters 3D programming can be viewed on 3D-capable television sets and will be available at no additional cost to Cox Advanced TV customers with an HD or HD/DVR receiver.
Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives fame is launching her own web destination, GetHatched.com, on DisneyFamily.com sometime in May. Described as a “Chick’s Guide to Life,” the lifestyle site will feature articles, blogs, original videos series, and advice from experts of interest to women.
The CW is sending up ghost hunting shows with Ghostfacers, a new digital series debuting to celebrate the 100th episode of Supernatural.
Soccer channel GolTV announced it will launch an HD feed on Aug. 1, 2010 in the U.S., the first HD channel to be offered stateside simultaneously in Spanish and English.
Social media company Virtue, which powers Apple’s iTunes Facebook page among others, is launching an official AppStore presence on Facebook, showcasing popular free and paid apps viewable by category, the “app of the week” and other App Store essentials. The “Search & Share” tab allows fans to search for apps and share them with friends while Vitrue’s Social Relationship Manager powers advanced wall posts, complete with scheduling, tracking and moderation capabilities.
Paris-based online video site Dailymotion completed a redesign featuring a cleaner interface and a new video player with enhanced sharing capabilities. The “hotspot” button, accessible when you click on the Export tab at the top of the screen, allows viewers to choose the exact point at which to share a video via Facebook, Twitter or other services. Online self-publishing group Author Solutions has struck a deal with Amazon to make its titles available on the Kindle. AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford, and Xlibris titles will be available on the device for $9.99.

Apple is working on its own mobile advertising platform for the iPad dubbed “iAd,” reports MediaPost. The company acquired mobile advertising firm Quattro for a reported $275 million in Jan., shortly after Google bought up AdMob. The piece claims Apple will unveil the solution to advertisers on April 7, just 4 days after the iPad’s launch.
Local media internet services provider Internet Broadcasting unveiled a new collapsible ad unit that expands and contracts on the page but leaves a branded button when minimized. Post-Newsweek Station sites are currently testing the “Hover Ad.”
Toyota’s Scion brand is trying to reignite its hipness among young people with Reinvent The Wheels, a new 6-part online reality show accessible via mobile, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. Contestants come up with designs to trick out their Scions, receiving help from professional builders to pull off the work. Agency partners ATTIK and Rogers & Cowan will promote the series via multiple platforms.
On a web page that tracks which of its services are now being blocked in mainland China, Google indicated that its mobile services are now being partially blocked as of Sunday. YouTube, Blogger and Google Sites have been down since 3/21.
AT&T is expanding its U-verse High Speed Internet Max Turbo service to every U-verse market, currently available in 120 markets across 22 states. Max Turbo offers broadband speeds of up to 24 Mbps downstream and up to 3 Mbps up for $65 as part of a bundle (faster than standard cable and enhanced DSL but much slower than Verizon or cable’s $100+/mo. DOSCIS 3.0 services.)
Ad Clutter, poor creative quality, poor targeting and wrong metrics used to measure the success of a campaign are the 4 biggest stumbling blocks in the current Display Advertising climate, according to a ComScore report presented last week at the ARF Re:Think Conference.
Mobilecause will launch a new free iPhone/iPod Touch app next week called uGive, enabling participating charities to get the word out and solicit support via the platform. The app will provide users the latest information on their favorite charity including mobile giving campaigns and videos about the organization. It will also offer the ability to make instant mobile donations and share uGive links and organization details with friends via email, Facebook or Twitter.
MTV is developing a “co-viewing” app for the iPad to allow friends to participate in chatter around reality and awards shows in real time, per Ad Age.
Philadelphia-based ad agency Red Tettemer has made a quartet of new hires in its interactive department: Bobby Juncosa joins as Technology Lead; Linus Graybill was hired as Senior Interactive Developer; Stephen Hurwitz joins as Senior Multimedia Developer and Jared Weinstock comes aboard as a Multimedia Developer.

Location-based services like Foursquare and Loopt are all the rage these days and every social networking platform wants to join the party. For instance, Twitter unveiled a new option earlier this month, tapping into location data from Vermont-based Maponics to allow users reveal where they’re tweeting from. But sharing this kind of info takes a leap of faith for the privacy conscious; one wonders when the backlash against such services will begin. This doesn’t mean the Foursquare concept of earning badges for checking into places can’t be applied in other, less creepy ways. The Miso app from TweetNGo enables iPhone users to get that community feeling by sharing what TV shows and movies they’re watching instead of their location. Viewers earn points and badges for watching shows and sharing comments during live broadcasts with Facebook, Twitter or foursquare. Like Twitter’s Trending Topics feature or 3rd party services like Trendistic, Miso also features a timeline that allows you to track what other Miso users are watching at a given moment.
Clarification: Customers ordering the iPad from the online Apple store from Saturday have to wait until April 12 before it ships; previous orders are still scheduled to ship on April 3.
