Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, March 28, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
NBC and SYCO TV and FremantleMedia (producers of American Idol), have teamed up for a new search series – America’s Got Talent. This show will follow the same search format with casting calls in major cities, looking for people of all ages and talents – singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, musicians. The first casting call will be in LA on April 6 where Simon Cowell will make a special appearance; with further casting calls set for New York, Chicago and Atlanta. The ultimate winner gets a million bucks. The show is set to premiere this summer on NBC. For more info on casting dates/requirements, check www.nbc.com and click on casting.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *CMT will re-launch its digital VH1 Country channel as CMT Pure Country and launch a new broadband network CMT Loaded. The channel will debut over Memorial Day Weekend, and CMT Loaded will start later this summer. CMT Pure Country will be available in more than 16 million homes, and will feature music videos from classic and current country artists such as Johnny Cash, George Strait and Toby Keith. CMT Loaded will feature new, short-form originals, performances, news and will be available free and on-demand through CMT.com.
As OLN prepares for the NHL playoffs, it will debut the 6-part Canadian mockumentary, The Tournament, starting April 10, 10p ET. The comedic series follows an underdog minor league hockey team whose players all have heart and aspire to win the big tournament.
Court TV will launch its new original show L.A. Forensics this Friday at 1030p. The program will go inside the L.A. crime labs featuring several high-profile cases and offering viewers a step-by-step course in crime scene investigation and forensics analysis.
Punk’d returns to MTV for a new season on April 3 at 10p. On the target list of unsuspecting celebrities this season are Kate Beckinsale, Chris Brown, Stacy Keibler, Matt Leinart and Elisha Cuthbert.
Tori Spelling returns once again to television on the scripted VH1 comedy, so noTORIous. Tori stars as a fictionalized version of herself, and Loni Anderson stars as her mother. The show premieres April 2 at 10p with two back-to-back episodes.
The Showbiz Show with David Spade on Comedy Central brought in record series ratings for its second season premiere on March 23 at 1030p. The show scored a 0.7 among A18-49 rating, with 740,000 A18-49 viewers, up 22% from the premiere of season #1.
Northstar Media is partnering with UK-based 3DD Entertainment to exclusively represent each other’s music titles in their respective countries. Northstar Media will rep 3DD’s 1000+ music programming catalog in North America for broadcast and VOD, including titles such as An Evening With James Blunt and Kaiser Chiefs: Live From San Francisco. 3DD will distribute Northstar titles such as Black Eyed Peas: Live From Sydney and RUSH R30: The 30th Anniversary Concert Special in the UK and Ireland.
Comcast and Current TV have signed a new distribution agreement that will increase the network’s distribution on Comcast’s digital cable service. By June 1 Current TV, which launched in August 2005, will go from 500,000 Comcast customers to approximately 8 million, and distribution from 20 million to 28 million U.S. households.
Program Partners has announced that it has added 16 new affiliates to its growing Crime Watch network, bringing its full coverage to 165 markets. The two-hour block features Cold Squad and Stone Undercover. The list of new stations clearing the block are WCWB-WPGH/Pittsburgh,
WLFL-WRDC/Raleigh, WVTV-WCGV/Milwaukee, WBSC-WLOS/Greenville-Spartanburg, KRRT-KABB/San Antonio, WABM-WTTO/Birmingham, WNYO-WUTV/Buffalo, WUPN-WXLV/Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem, WWBT/Richmond, WFGX-WEAR/Mobile, KFVE-KHNL/Honolulu, WNYS-WSYT/Syracuse, KBXJ/Shreveport, WDEF/Chattanooga, WDKA-KBSI/Paducah and KGAN/Cedar Rapids.
First there was Ocean’s 11, then Ocean’s 12 with the addition of Catherine Zeta-Jones … and now it will be Ocean’s 13 with the addition of Ellen Barkin. While Warner Bros. expects the majority of the cast to return, not returning to the are Zeta-Jones and Julia Roberts, because the script just doesn’t have enough for them to do. Steven Soderbergh will also return to direct. The film is due out next summer.
* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *David E. Kelley has a new project at ABC called Life on Mars, based on the BBC sci-fi drama that launched this past January. The story is about a detective who lives in the 21st century, tho following a car accident inexplicably finds himself living and working in the 1970’s. Kelley will write and exec produce the pilot, which is targeting a Fall 2007 debut.
ABC‘s comedy pilot Women of a Certain Age starring Heather Locklear, has added Peri Gilpin to the cast. The story is about three friends, and playing the third is Illeana Douglas.
CBS‘s comedy pilot My Ex Life starring Tom Cavanagh, has added Gillian Vigman to co-star (this is a second position for Gillian after Sons & Daughters).
Divorce Court, distributed by 20th TV, will have a new judge on the bench when it returns for its 8th season this fall. Stepping down is Her Honor Mablean Ephriam. Stepping up is Judge Lynn Toler, who hails from Cleveland where she was Administrative Judge in Cleveland’s Heights Municipal Court for 8 years. If her name sounds familiar, she’s probably been in your living room before. In 2001, she stepped down, and was cast to preside over the 20th TV syndicated series Power of Attorney.
Casting Call: Sci-Fi Channel, comic book author Stan Lee and his POW Entertainment, Inc, and Bruce Nash’s Nash Entertainment will hold an open casting call for the reality series Who Wants to Be A Superhero on April 4, in LA. Potential participants should consider attending in their superhero costume and be prepared to show their superhero stuff and present their credo. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Vicky Kahn has been named the new VP/Consumer Publicity for Court TV, overseeing the publicity for Court TV’s daytime and prime programming and on-air talent, as well as develop media strategies for the network’s press outreach and manage press events.
Richard Beaven joins Initiative Worldwide as CEO/North America, reporting to Alec Gerster, CEO. Based in New York, Richard will be responsible for Initiative’s offices in the United States and Canada and will oversee the agency’s communications planning, buying, research and business operations.
WWE is linking its brand with music from a variety of genres, television, radio, internet, ring tones movies by forming the WWE Music Group. The new company will reach out to both in-house talent and established recording artists to create music for WWE Superstar albums, television, PPV programming, entrance themes and other initiatives. Neil Lawi has been named the group’s General Manager, reporting to Kevin Dunn, EVP/Television Production. Neil’s duties will include management of all business and daily operations of the WWE Music Group
Evan Sternschein has been promoted to EVP/Advertising Sales and Network Strategies for Discovery Networks U.S. Evan will lead the advertising sales efforts, manage strategic network positioning and be responsible for all negotiations with clients and agencies for Discovery’s 13 ad-supported US channels and oversee the New York, Chicago and Atlanta sales teams. He will continue to report to Scott McGraw, EVP/Advertising Sales and Marketing.
TV Land and NAN has elevated Vanessa Reyes-Smith to VP/Communications, West Coast. Vanessa will manage the development and execution of communications related to the promotion of TV Land’s and NAN’s original series and specials.
Michael Quigley has been named Executive Director/Business Development at Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc., where he will oversee and execute non-linear platform distribution for the Turner properties across broadband, interactive television and wireless. Michael will be based in Atlanta and report to Bill Stratton, VP/Business Development.
Cindy Wallis, Director/Program Acquisitions and Scheduling at USA Network has decided to step down from her post. After the birth of her second child, Cindy will pursue motherhood full time and do part-time consulting work within the industry, with plans to return full time at a later date.
Justice Mitchell has been appointed as Creative Director for i.d.e.a.s., the integrated creative studio in Orlando.
*RATINGS*Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: ABC had the strongest Sunday night ratings with a 5.8/14 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was #2 with a with a 3.8/10, followed by FOX 3.3/8, NBC 2.5/6, UNIV 2.0/5, WB 0.9/2, TELE 0.2/1. At 7p, with a 4.3/13 CBS was the big winner with the regional finals of the NCAA Basketball Championship that went 45 minutes into overtime and cut into the first 15 minutes of 60 Minutes. Then at 8p ABC took the lead with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 4.9/12, just a share point ahead of CBS’ 4.6/11 and Fox’s The Simpsons/War at Home average of 4.5/11. Desperate Housewives at 9p brought in the night for ABC with an 8.8/19, leaving all other shows far behind. ABC continued in the lead at 10p with a repeat of Grey’s Anatomy at 6.7/17.
